12.01.2022 BEERSHEBA BURNER - William (Bill) Bernard Heppner With remembrance day approaching, the recent 103yr anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba and specifically the charge of the Light Brigade still retains special significance in the minds of many Australians. With all brigades of both mounted divisions already committed to the battle to capture Beersheba, the only brigade available was the 4th Light Horse Brigade. These swordless mounted infantrymen galloped over the plain, ri...ding towards the town and a redoubt supported by entrenchments on a mound of Tel es Saba south-east of Beersheba. The 4th Light Horse Regiment on the right jumped trenches before turning to make a dismounted attack on the Ottoman infantry in the trenches, gun pits, and redoubts, with their heroic actions helping to shorten the war in that part of the conflict. Amongst the 4LHR was Private Bill Heppner, a 22 year old Orchard man from Emerald, Victoria who enlisted on 7 January 1916 and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 June 1919. Following his return, Bill would become a local legend in many ways. He became a Lilydale Gift running champion, expert marksman and was a star winger for the Burners in the 1920 - 1930's. He played in the Club's 1930 premiership team and coached the Club's 1933 premiership. He was Shire President 1942-3 and Mayor of Nunawading 1954-5, 1958-9. He served a total of 26 years on the Council. There is even a street named after him in Blackburn Nth, opposite Blackburn High School. Bill would leave his mark in many ways and it is his story amongst many others from our great suburb and Club that is told in great detail in the upcoming History of the Blackburn Football Club which has been lovingly written by James Nicolas and will be enjoyed by all. #oneclub #lestweforforget https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/E84287

09.01.2022 We need your help to complete the following confidential survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CH5YCZ8. As part of its initiative to level the playing field for women and girls in sport, the state government is undertaking a Female Friendly Club Culture Survey This is an important survey which will go towards state funding and support of our great club. (In fact we need to complete it as part of the funding agreement for the new clubrooms). Anyone associated with the club c...an respond: Male or female; Players, parents or partners; Committee members, coaches, team managers, trainers, officials etc. The results will be shared with the club. 08.01.2022 THE BEANIE IS BACK! Thats right, the iconic blue Big Freeze beanie is back again in 2020! Every year a new beanie is designed and only a limited number are produced. Purchase your iconic beanie now and join the FightMND Army to help fight The "Beast that is MND. Dont miss out! https://shoutforgood.com/embed/lightbox... BUY NOW Big Freeze 6 is taking on a different look to previous campaigns as a result of the many challenges and lifestyle changes that COVID-19 presents. One thing that remains constant though is that despite the uncertainty in the community, our fight against The Beast must go on. The fight cannot be postponed, it cannot be cancelled; MND does not stop and neither can we. The Beast is still out there so our commitment to fighting it is as important now as it has ever been, especially as MND sufferers are one of the most vulnerable communities due to the current health crisis. Since day one, the beanie has been the symbol of our fight and it has been you, the FightMND Army, that have made it so symbolic through your amazing support. Our beanies always sell out quickly, so dont delay in ordering your new one. Unfortunately, due to uncertainty around the AFL 2020 season, the traditional Queens Birthday match and Big Freeze at the G in June wont go ahead as planned. In the meantime, your continued support is appreciated, and we look forward to seeing our new beanies, being worn proudly out in the community very soon. #bigfreeze6 #burnersinbeanies #oneclub

07.01.2022 What a day for the Brilliant Burners as they came to play and backed Coach Paul Breen in playing an attacking game and winning by 14pts and return to A Grade (Prem) where they have stayed! After being so close for a few years it was a fitting reward for such a young and talented group led by Steve Cochrane as Captain, who also took out the Gordon Parker Medal for BOG and would later Coach the Seniors for 3yrs. This great day is also captured in our upcoming Club History book where we interview the President at the time Pete Jago for some insights on the Premiership.
06.01.2022 In an exiting development, we welcome a new partnership to add some sizzle to our digital platforms in 2021.

02.01.2022 VALE - GARRY COUPER To BFC Members, Past & Present Players and Supporters. It is with deep sadness that the Club announces the passing of past player Garry Couper on Wednesday 17th June (45yrs). ... Garry grew up in the Blackburn area, and played footy and cricket with the Burners for a number of years from the early 90s. Coups was highly regarded amongst the BFC community, both as a player and a teammate and was well known to many people still involved at the Club today. He will be fondly remembered and our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Coups

01.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET In 2020, Australia marks 105 years since the Gallipoli campagn and 75 years since Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War. Whilst RSLs, have made the difficult decision to cancel local Anzac Day services, we know all Aussies and their Kiwi cousins will be reaching out to loved ones and giving thanks to all those men and women that gave the ultimate sacrifice and others that currently serve our Nation proudly. It is with this thought that, in...stead of attending our regular Dawn Service with the members of the Blackburn RSL, our great Club (Committee, Players & Members) pay due homage to the lads with a tribute to one of their esteemed leaders Mr Jim Marshall in sharing some of his reflections of what this day especially means to him. Jim has been a great supporter of the Club and in our events and efforts to assist his members. Whilst we cant catch up tomorrow and to host, what would have been a mouth watering Anzac Day clash with Sth Croydon FC, we have offered to host the RSLs Gunfire salute service in 2021 in our new Clubrooms which should be a special occasion together. We know many Burners will be lighting a candle as part of the "stand to" campaign at the bottom of their driveway as a mark of respect and in place of attending local services - so well done to all and make sure you post a few photos here for us all to see. For our Junior Burners that would like to learn more about our ANZAC tradition and story, visit anzacportal.dva.gov.au In addition and in place of buying your annual poppy, please consider making a contribution to the Anzac Day Appeal. Your gift can help provide veterans with crisis accommodation, emergency financial help, or physical and mental health support.://anzacappeal.com.au/ #lestweforget #oneclub #anzacday Photo credits: Renato Vizzarri See more
