20.01.2022 One of the oldest and continual running pastoral properties in the State of Queensland and South Burnett Region, established in 1842. Rich in character and an integral part of Queensland’s pastoral heritage Taromeo, established by Scottish migrant Simon Scott in 1842 and still operational today, has been restored over the years to its former glory and for the benefit of the South Burnett history and heritage.

16.01.2022 2015 Blackbutt welcomes home, one of its own!! Roy Emerson accompanied by his wife Joy, came home to the town of his birth, to officially open the Nukku Nook( old Nukku school). Roy himself went to the old school, and reminisced fondly of old school days, while catching up with old school friends as well.... Many of the Emerson family themselves came to meet up with Roy and Joy, so there was an atmosphere of family reunion as well. There was a lunch also arranged by the Blackbutt And District Tourism and heritage Association. Over 130 people packed into the Blackbutt Golf Club to hear Roy Speak, and to eat a beautiful lunch, catered by St Johns Anglican social committee. See more

04.01.2022 A rich, timber-filled history South Burnett Times 25th Dec 2012 Photo: Contributed HISTORIC: The timber loading yards at Blackbutt railway. FOR the first two decades of the region’s history, the economy of the area depended firstly on agricultural pursuits and then on the burgeoning timber industry.... Sawmilling was the primary industry of the district, the mills providing work for hundreds of men, both at the mills themselves and in the scrub, felling and carting timber. These early mills included Andersen’s Blackbutt Timber Company, Heaslip and Houston’s mill on the Crows Nest Rd, and Blinco Brothers, also on Crows Nest Rd. AJ Raymond’s mill at Taromeo, T Emmerson’s mill on the Crows Nest Rd, Les Muller’s mill at Nukku and a later mill, established in 1919, was Syd Gould’s mill in Hart St, Blackbutt. William Ewing Houston later owned two mills, one at Blackbutt and another at Taromeo. The Taromeo mill was gutted by fire circa 1930. Les and Dolly Muller arrived in Blackbutt in 1948 to settle at Nukku where they constructed their sawmill and house near the rail siding. The mill was primarily involved in making fruit cases, which were supplied to the Granite Belt, Gayndah and Mundubbera regions. In November, 1960, Muller purchased the Taromeo mill owned by W.E. Houston Pty Ltd. Another addition to the saw milling family was the Benarkin mill owned by Wilkinson and Son of Nambour, which began operating at Benarkin in the 1960s. The difficulties facing those early selectors and timbermen were outlined in an article published in 1905, under the heading of Subduing a Howling Wilderness. The report claimed Blackbutt was 20 miles from nowhere. On very recent maps it was laid down between Esk and Nanango. The first question a visitor asked his guide when viewing the sights of the settlement was, How on earth did you manage to dig this place out? Those who had seen Blackbutt had but a poor idea of the nature of this undertaking. The narrowroadways cut in the course of yearswaswalled up on each side with standing timber that was in places impenetrable. See more
