24.01.2022 Stay healthy in this heat! Some tips from Queensland Health.

23.01.2022 Here's some simple ideas to improve your mental health & wellbeing.

23.01.2022 Men's Health - Mental Health Over their lifetime, mental illness affects almost half the Australian population. Depression and anxiety are serious illnesses affecting many Australians. Men in particular, face a unique set of challenges when it comes to managing their mental wellbeing, with the associated stigma (of shame and embarrassment) often preventing them from seeking help and taking action. One in five Australian men (2.1 million) will experience at least one mental ...illness in any 12 month period People with a serious mental illness have life expectancy reduced by between 15 to 25 years in comparison with the general population Men generally have lower levels of awareness of mental illnesses than women Generally, Australian men are significantly less likely to admit that they, or someone in their family, has ever experienced a mental health issue In 2011, a total of 2,273 Australians died by suicide. Over 85% of these suicides were men - this translates to an average of six deaths per day, of which five are men Women are twice as likely to visit a mental health service provider than men Who can help? Different health professionals provide different types of services, treatments and assistance to help people on the road to recovery. It’s very important to find the right mental health professional to suit your individual needs. A doctor is a good person with whom you can discuss your concerns in the first instance. They will be able to provide you further information along with guidance and advice about treatment options.

22.01.2022 Just like food, medicines can deteriorate over time. This can make them less effective and, in some cases, can make them toxic. So take time out to remove any out-of-date or unwanted medicines you have at home. But wait don’t throw your old medicines in the bin or down the sink! Instead, take your out-of-date or unwanted medicines to any pharmacy so they can be disposed of safely. 15.01.2022 Media Statement - 4 September 2013 - Fourth measles case A fourth measles case in as many weeks has been reported to Queensland Health. A teenager, who travelle...d around south-east Queensland extensively during the time she was contagious, is currently being treated for the disease. Acting Senior Director of the Communicable Diseases Unit Dr Stephen Lambert said residents of south east Queensland needed to be alert for symptoms, particularly those who may have come into contact with the patient. The teenager was at: Movie World and Seaworld Nara Resort on 24 August Habourtown and the North Lakes Shopping Centre on 25 August Caboolture High School and Woolworths Central Lakes on 26 August and 2 September Grease musical at QPAC (7.30pm session) on 28 August QML Caboolture on 30 August Dr Lambert said given the large numbers of people potentially exposed, further measles cases could present during the next few weeks. Measles is one of the most infectious of all communicable diseases and is spread by tiny droplets through coughing and sneezing. True measles is a serious viral infection that causes fever, cough, runny nose, then a red spotty rash and sore eyes a few days later. Symptoms usually start around 10 days after infection but sometimes longer so anyone who develops measles-like symptoms within the next week or two should contact their GP for advice. It is very important to call the medical practice first to say you could have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading the disease to others. Dr Lambert said measles could make people very unwell and although complications are uncommon they could be very serious. Approximately 30% of adults with measles will be hospitalised. It can be a severe illness even in otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults. Queensland Health staff will continue to actively investigate this case and do whatever they can to prevent further transmission, he said. For more information on the measles virus visit: http://access.health.qld.gov.au//viralinfec/measles_fs.asp or contact 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).

09.01.2022 Around 1 in 3 unplanned hospital admissions involving older Australians are due to problems with medicines. Half of these medicine problems could be prevented. As an older person you are more likely to experience side effects, interactions, and other medicine-related problems. This is because your body changes with age, you tend to have more health issues, and you are probably taking several medicines.... So it’s important to talk to your health professionals about your medicines and any new symptoms you have. The OLDER steps will also help to prevent medicine problems.

08.01.2022 Today marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Purchase a pink ribbon to raise awareness and show your support for the one in eight women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.

06.01.2022 Take the time this month to find out what you need to know about breast awareness and share this important information with your family, friends and colleagues Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease. Remember you don’t need to be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts. Changes to look for include: a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast a change in the size or shape of your breast... a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling an unusual pain that doesn't go away. Most changes aren’t due to breast cancer but it’s important to see your doctor without delay if you notice any of these changes. See more

04.01.2022 Movember aims to change the face of men’s health and reverse people's way of thinking by putting a fun twist on this serious issue. Using the moustache as a catalyst, the aim is to bring about change and give men the opportunity and confidence to learn and talk about their health more openly and take action. On average, men die at a significantly younger age than women the average life expectancy for Australian men is almost five years less than women (presently 79.5 compar...ed to 84), however there is no biological reason for this. The reasons for the poor state of men’s health in Australia and around the world are numerous and complex. From Movember’s perspective the reasons for the poor state of men’s health include: Lack of awareness and understanding of the health issues men face Men not openly discussing their health and how they’re feeling Reluctance to take action when men don’t feel physical or mentally well Men engaging in risky activities that threaten their health Stigmas surrounding mental health
