18.01.2022 This year the BLACK COCKATOO ART AWARDS committee initiated the Aunty Marie Stewart Encouragement Award that is sponsored by Arthouse Direct here in Nowra. Aunty Marie was instrumental in the lobbying process to introduce the Aboriginal Cultural Arts Course to the Nowra campus of TAFE NSW in 2008. Her input, support and encouragement for the Course’s continuation and development never wavered! Aunty Marie, her son Paul, his partner Angela Dixon and Noel Wellington were the 4 ...students who first approached me to commence the BLACK COCKATOO ART AWARDS to promote Aboriginal Art and artists based in the south coast. Next year will be our 10th Anniversary celebration and plans are already being made to make the event bigger and better! On behalf of the BLACK COCKATOO ARTS committee I would like to thank Aunty Marie’s family for condoning our idea to introduce this award. Tim Curley is the first recipient of this new award and a very worthy winner as he has worked tirelessly over the last 2 years. Tim has completed Certificate 3 & Certificate 4 in Aboriginal Cultural Arts and is moving into the Diploma of Visual Arts in 2020. Congratulations Tim! Tim is pictured with his award winning piece entitled BILLABONG

01.01.2022 Are you or someone you know an Aboriginal Artist with connections to the South Coast? We are looking for someone to create an artwork for 'The TERRA Within' a m...ajor exhibition curated by Warwick Keen as a response to the 250th Anniversary of Cook’s voyage to chart the east coast of Australia. The artworks in the exhibition will be used to address the impacts of the past 250 years of colonisation and to also celebrate the survival of the oldest living culture in the world. The Gibbon Foundation have provided $10,000 for the creation of this artwork. There's more information and links to application forms at https://shoalhavenregionalgallery.com.au/news Image: Warwick Keen, Reading Between the Lines, 2007, image courtesy the artist, Wollongong Art Gallery collection.
