24.01.2022 A quick thank you to everyone who has already got on board mullets for mental health. We're absolutely blown away by our community's response and overwhelmed by the $150K+ already raised to support mental health research. 2020 has been difficult for all of us. Coronavirus restrictions have meant many of our major fundraising events this year were canceled. We're all amazed at the sheer amount of you getting involved so we can get our evidence-based mental health tools and re...sources to those who need them. Please remember the Coronavirus wellbeing support service via Beyond Blue on 1800 512 348, Lifeline on 13 11 14 and our own online resources available here: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au//coronavirus-resourc/ To get involved in #mulletsformentalhealth visit https://bit.ly/mullets4mh. And, if mullets aren't you're thing we're always looking for participants for our research. At the moment, we're testing whether an online training program can improve the confidence of our community in identifying and supporting someone who might be having thoughts of suicide. To take part please visit: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au//recognise-and-respo/ Take care - and thank you!

02.01.2022 "I've been prone to anxiety for as long as I can remember. At the end of high school, an overriding sense of helplessness set in as the familiarity of high school was gone, and many of my friends left to work or travel. I began university under all this pressure to find new friends and make good grades. For a year and a half, I struggled privately. I became withdrawn and avoided my family as much as I could. I knew something wasnt right but was worried I would be judged if I... spoke up. My close friends noticed I wasn't doing well but I'd just make up excuses as to why I couldn't seek help. When they persisted, I eventually gave in and saw a doctor. I was 21 years old when I was diagnosed with depression. The diagnosis offended me - I thought that it reflected a personal weakness. But I also felt relieved. You can't address a problem without knowing the cause. Seeking help was hard for me. I didnt understand mental illnesses, and the stigma around them weighed heavily on my mind. I thought you had to have experienced something traumatic to justify being sick. I felt guilty about being unwell because my life was so good. Ultimately, seeking help and getting the diagnosis was probably the best thing I've ever done for my mental health. I now know that trauma isnt the only cause of depression - genetics or stress can also be causes. I've also learnt that you don't have to justify having depression. I'm just an average university student and I have it. I do a lot of things to stay well now. Cognitive therapies have helped me with anxiety and panic attacks. Breathing exercises may sound simple, but they have helped me so much. I try to eat well, even though I love junk food! I exercise even though my body hates it. My psychologist told me to get eight hours of sleep a night, so I force myself to do this. At first, I thought, 'How will I get anything done if I sleep that much?!' But Ive learned there is a time and a place for rest, and a time and a place for work. Sharing my story always makes me feel less alone. Ive been volunteering as a presenter with the Black Dog Institute since 2014, and lately, I have been speaking to companies and businesses who promote mental wellbeing in their work environments. Volunteering has given me a sense of purpose and community. I feel empowered and I'm making a difference. Sharing my story always makes me feel less alone. Ive been volunteering as a presenter with the Black Dog Institute since 2014, and lately, I have been speaking to companies and businesses that promote mental wellbeing in their work environments.
