25.01.2022 The Fra Angelico Arts award is awarded to a student who consistently has demonstrated outstanding effort and achievement in the Arts at Blackfriars. It is our pleasure to award this to Harrison Catley for his outstanding efforts, commitment and participation in this area. In particular, Harrison has shown an outstanding commitment to his Music as 2020 Music Captain. Harry is a talented musician who has always contributed as a strong member to multiple co-curricular ensembles ...such as Saxophone Ensemble, Concert Band and Stage Band - all the while juggling many other responsibilities as Deputy Head Prefect. His academic knowledge is of a high standard and he has consistently demonstrated himself to be a confident and skilful musician, as well as a positive mentor for younger music students. Congratulations Harry, and well done.

24.01.2022 Blackfriars Strategic Plan 2021-24 Community Survey We’re interested in understanding your views, experiences and expectations of education offered by Blackfriars as we look to the next 3 to 5 years and beyond. Your input, gathered through this short survey, will be valuable as we consider priorities for our planning. One of the great legacies St Dominic left his followers was an Order which has a special charism, character and purpose, yet allows for constant inner renewal ...to meet the changing times. - In Search for Truth: The Dominican Way in Education #community

24.01.2022 Would your son like to learn an instrument in 2021? The vibrant Blackfriars music faculty provides students with a wide range of instrumental tuition opportunities from Reception to Year 12, with lessons available on-site before, during and after school (on a rotating roster). It's recommended for students undertaking lessons to join an ensemble as well - it helps them hone their craft, learn valuable teamwork skills and make new friends across year levels too.... Blackfriars has a long tradition of success across both SACE music subjects and co-curricular music ensembles, and 2021 is set to be another exciting year for the faculty! So get involved! (PS: continuing students still need to return a tuition form to make sure they secure a place!) More information and an application form is available here: https://blackfriars.sa.edu.au/learning/music/

23.01.2022 It's been a great start to Term 4 for our Reception and ELC students, who spent this morning at the Adelaide Festival Centre watching Windmill Theatre Co's fantastic production of Grug! After the show the boys took a stroll to enjoy recess by the river, enjoying the fresh air and checking out Adelaide Oval too! It's wonderful to be so close to the city that we can get out and about so easily, and offer such rich cultural experiences to students right from the early years.

22.01.2022 The final instalment of the Race to High School podcast from Arch D Radio has just landed! This episode follows our new Year 7 and 8 students for 2021, as they take part in a scavenger hunt around Blackfriars and get familiar with their new school. We also hear from their guide, Year 9 student Harry Boyd-Turner, and Mr Ruggiero reflects on the relationships he himself built at Blackfriars as a student. Have a listen below, or check out the full playlist of episodes in this series here: https://soundcloud.com/schooll//blackfriars-race-to-high-1

22.01.2022 The State Government Citizenship Award is presented to a student who has gone above and beyond the normal level of involvement and has excelled in some or all aspects of their schooling. This medal, donated by the state government, is for one Year 12 student who has demonstrated these characteristics on a regular basis. We were fortunate to have Rachel Sanderson - Member for Adelaide with us on Friday evening to present this award to our very deserving winner, Michael Nong. M...ichael always volunteers to help those around him in any way possible. He is always willing to support others using his abilities, both in academia and as a leader within Blackfriars and the wider community. Michael always models inclusive behaviour and tries his best in everything. He has served the school exceptionally this year as a Young Christian Students (YCS) Captain. Congratulations Michael and thank you for your service to Blackfriars. See more

20.01.2022 As we head towards end of year exams for our senior students, it's important to think about how we as parents, teachers and support staff can best prepare our boys. As much as academic preparation is vital to their success, so too is managing any associated stress and worry that can accompany big life challenges. This article has some great reminders for families, so we encourage you to have a read: https://www.theeducatoronline.com//five-ways-to-hel/273660 We also remind a...ll students and families that Blackfriars is committed to holistic wellbeing for all students. Referrals to our Counselling Team may be made by the student (self-referral), a parent or caregiver, or a teacher. Referral forms are available via SEQTA and this service is free. We also encourage all students to check in with their home group teacher or Head of House if they need extra guidance or support. See more

14.01.2022 Last Saturday, a number of Blackfriars students and their families had the great privilege of attending the ordination of Old Scholar, Pasquale (Pat) Lopresti (BPS'78) to the priesthood. Pat attended St Margaret Mary's Primary at Croydon Park before attending Blackfriars for his secondary schooling. He studied at the University of Tasmania, University of Adelaide and University of New South Wales, completing a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws before working as as a lawyer ...for the State Attorney General. Pat's call to the priesthood started at a young age but it was not until 2012 that he took concrete steps to make this a reality. Upon returning from volunteering in Lourdes, France, he made the decision that would change his life. After two years of spiritual direction and discernment, Pat found himself at the doors of Pope Saint John XXIII Seminary in Massachusetts, USA. Pat graduated from the Seminary with a Masters of Divinity earlier this year. Pictured with Fr Pat and the boys are Blackfriars Chaplain, Fr William Loh OP and Archbishop Patrick O'Regan. On behalf of the entire Blackfriars community, congratulations and God bless you, Fr Pat! We are hoping to have Fr Pat celebrate Mass with the Blackfriars community very soon. 13.01.2022 As part of our Aquinas Centre Community Open Night on Thursday, you'll get the chance to see and learn more about a brand new piece of art commissioned for Blackfriars by Indigenous artist Allan Sumner. Before you do, we'd like to share a little more about the artist behind this feature piece... Allan is a descendent of the Ngarrindjeri people, the Kaurna people and the Yankunytjatjara people. Through the love of his heritage, Allan facilitates cultural tours and is a popular... provider of workshops in schools and community groups where he teaches Aboriginal arts and culture. Allan has taken a passionate interest in Dreaming Stories, spending valuable time with his Elders. Retracing ancient art forms, Allan communicates the stories, passed down from generation to generation, through his contemporary art pieces. Allan mostly paints with acrylic applied onto canvas, with various artworks having been exhibited in Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. He also makes boomerangs, bark shields, didgeridoos, and other cultural artefacts that have been gifted to visiting dignitaries and international sporting teams. Blackfriars is honoured to be a recipient of one of Allan's stunning pieces of art, which serves as a physical acknowledgement of country for our students and staff every day.

The team of three dynamic actors performed three unique shows across the day, incorporating poetry into comic scenes, dramatic monologues, character studies, classical recitations and contemporary interpretations. The boys were highly engaged, laughing along with the performers and asking perceptive questions in the Q&A time afterwards. Thank you to Poetry in Action for visiting us all the way from Sydney!

09.01.2022 YEAR 7 FAMILIES Please note that further to the information provided earlier today, Catholic Education SA has advised that all school camps scheduled to begin/leave on Monday 23 November are to be postponed or cancelled. Unfortunately, due to the inability to reschedule the Year 7 camp before the end of 2020, Blackfriars has made the difficult decision to cancel this event.... We understand the disappointment this will cause for the boys, however the decision has been made for the safety and wellbeing of all students, staff and camp facilitators. Thank you for your understanding

09.01.2022 The Jordan of Saxony School Spirit Award is awarded to recognise one student who most aptly demonstrates attitudes and behaviours that promote the Vision of Blackfriars and the Four Pillars of Dominican Life: prayer, study, community and service. This award epitomises the values state...d in our Vision Statement and is the pinnacle of all Blackfriars Priory School awards. He displays outstanding respect to staff and students and an exceptional commitment to the school community. including a committed engagement with the co-curricular life of Blackfriars. 08.01.2022 Last night's storm was a doozy, but it's not the only thing that's blown us away at Blackfriars this week! Our Year 4s have been busy building their very own wind turbines during their STEM lessons with Ms Morris. They had to work together in small groups to create a freestanding wind turbine that could lift a cup 15cm off the ground within a minute of firing up the wind machine (also known as a hairdryer!) The boys constructed some very impressive turbines and learnt a lot by going through the process of ideation, design, revision and creation. Well done boys!

08.01.2022 The St Martin de Porres Service to the Community Award is awarded to a student within his year level, who demonstrates Christ-centred behaviour through voluntary service in Church, School and Community. It recognises students who envisage themselves as part of the solution to the problems that our world encounters. The recipient of the award, Trung Nguyen, takes an active involvement in instigating and developing service initiatives within both the school and wider community. Trung always displays respect to staff and students, as well as a Christ-centred love towards all others, thus promoting and living the gospel values. Trung exemplifies the Four Pillars of Dominican Life and demonstrates Christian values in everyday life. Congratulations, Trung Nguyen.

06.01.2022 Welcome back! This morning we say welcome to all of our primary students, our Year 7s and our Year 12s. We also thanked our existing and new parents with delicious tea and coffee from our friends at Fresh Bean Adelaide. We're looking forward to another big year of learning, friendship and community - and we hope you are too! Let's go 2021!

06.01.2022 #classof2033 Yep, these little faces will become Blackfriars Class of '33 before we know it! Ms Schenk's Reception class have had a fun day getting to know their new classroom and 'big school' routines, and luckily they had some of last year's mid-year entry students on-hand to show them the ropes. We dropped by for a quick chat this morning and asked the all-important question, "What would you like to be when you grow up?"... Here are some of their answers.... "A race car driver for Ferrari!" - Tommy "A dog walker. I love doggies." - Gus "A digger!" - Spiros "A 31 year-old man." - Jack "A policeman." - Christian, Henry and Thomas "A footballer and a builder. That way I can earn $1000 and I'll be very busy." - Ollie "I might work it out later." - James We might just check in on these ideas in 2033 and see how they're progressing. #onceablacksboy

05.01.2022 Special days like Remembrance Day provide us with incredibly rich experiences for hands-on learning - all the way from ELC to year 12. Today our ELC classes observed a minute's silence at 11am (no mean feat for three and four year-olds!) before listening to the Last Post and making commemorative wreaths together. Making learning experiences engaging, relevant and age appropriate for our little ones is so important, and something our ELC staff do exceptionally well.

05.01.2022 THIS JUST IN!! Blackfriars has had exceptional success at this year's ABODA Festival (with judging taking place from pre-recorded online submissions). Stage Bands 1 and 2 both received Gold Awards, while our Concert Bands took out Silver Awards. Ms Lucy Pope, Head of Performing Arts says she is thrilled with this year's results.... "I am extremely proud of the efforts that all of the boys put towards preparing their performance in what has been a very challenging year. Congratulations on the outstanding results," says Ms Pope.

04.01.2022 It's physical education week! As well as our ELC - Year 2 sports day, which took place on Tuesday, we've had a variety of fun events happening to promote physical activity within the community. Yesterday our Year 6 leaders facilitated a variety of simple but fun games to promote physical education to students at other Catholic primary schools. They have done an outstanding job in coaching, providing constructive feedback and connecting with students from St Martin de Porres School, Sheidow Park , Holy Family Catholic School, Our Lady of Grace School, Glengowrie and Catherine McAuley School Craigmore. Well done boys!

04.01.2022 Not only this year’s First XI Joe Mullen medalist but... #gohounds

03.01.2022 Well done to our junior athletes on their success this week at the North Adelaide SAPSASA District Selection Trials. We had a huge number of boys placing in the top four of their age group, and Blackfriars came second in the overall competition by just one point! Pretty impressive when you remember we only competed in the boys division. Well done boys on your effort, sportsmanship and enthusiasm And thank you to Mr Cheary, Ms Comley and Mrs Nolan for all your contributions to making the day such a success. Full results are available on the Blackfriars Newsroom here: https://blackfriars.sa.edu.au///sapsasa-athletics-results/

03.01.2022 Congratulations to Blackfriars Class of 2020 graduate, Trung Nguyen, whose ATAR of 99.25 places him in the top 1% of students in Australia. Trung's outstanding results include a merit in Biology and A+ grades in English Literary Studies and Physics. #prayer #study #community #service

03.01.2022 Finally, the Blackfriars Best Allrounder Award is presented to a Year 12 student who has displayed an all-round ability to demonstrate leadership and excel in their efforts in several pursuits. It says a lot about our winner, Daniel West, that he only started at Blackfriars in the middle of 2019 as a Year 11. Daniel quickly adjusted to life at Blackfriars, making a strong impression on everyone, and he was elected House Captain of De Vitoria House for 2020. In his role as a House Captain he has been described as mature, having a good sense of humour, reliable, kind, considerate, honest, a great role model and someone who shows initiative. He has regularly been involved in supporting school events and has been totally committed to achieving his best. Congratulations Daniel on this award.

02.01.2022 URGENT! As per the message sent via SEQTA, Open and Middle Tennis training tonight has been cancelled due to the courts being too wet and slippery.

01.01.2022 The final days of the Masters building. Mr Ruggiero shares his lasting memories in our upcoming edition of The OPtimist (keep an eye on your letterbox in November!) but we'd love to hear yours too. Share in the comments below
