25.01.2022 To our lovely community, Blackheath Dental is now operating at Level 1 Restrictions, which means we are now able to perform all Dental procedures! However, with the level 1 restrictions in place we are still taking a range of extra safety and hygiene precautions on top of our normal high levels of hygiene to protect our patients and team. To continue to keep each other safe, we are calling all of our patients a day prior to their booked appointments to go through screening q...uestions to determine whether they are able to safely come in for an appointment. Upon arrival at the clinic each patient will be asked to do a 20 second alcohol hand sanitize as well as a 30 second antiseptic mouth rinse. All Surfaces including door knobs, counter tops and Eftpos/HICAPS machine are wiped down between patients. Our Team would like to thank you all for your patience, understanding and support over the past months as we have navigated the safest approaches under the Australian Dental Associations guidelines during this crisis to help keep each other safe.

23.01.2022 To our lovely patients Due to the rise of coronavirus in our community and adhering to Australian Dental Association Guidelines all dental practices have been instructed to only see patients with emergency needs. Our first priority will always be keeping our patients and community safe and to prevent any potential for exposure. All elective care and hygiene appointments will be rescheduled to a later date. This restriction currently has been instructed until at least the 30th... of April 2020. 1. Please call ahead rather than come in to make an emergency appointment. 2. When you call, please let us know the reasons for your emergency, essentially an emergency is something that cannot wait a few weeks. o During this pre-visit call we will ask you the following questions: Have you had any of the most common symptoms of coronavirus in the last 14 days: dry cough, muscle aches, respiratory difficulties (even minor) and fever (Temperature above 37.3 degrees) Importantly for you and the community, please be as honest as possible about your symptoms. o If we are able to schedule you an appointment, please remember less time in contact with people reduces potential exposure o When you arrive to the practice we will ask you to wash your hands with hand sanitizer for 20 seconds and rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash for 30 seconds o As you would be aware, we need to avoid physical contact so we wont shake hands or elbows. o We will do our absolute best for you not cross pass with any other patient. In the event of this happening remember you need to be at least 2 meters apart. o The World Health Organization recommends whenever possible, to pay with a credit card to minimize contact and avoid using cash. o Remember that we would only treat the emergency and would delay the non-urgent element of the treatment for the next phase. We will be contacting you to get appointments rescheduled to when restrictions are lifted. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we do our part to promote a healthy community and prevent the spread of the virus. Stay safe and take care of each other. See more

20.01.2022 Dental Erosion Part 2 - Prevention and Treatment. Dental Erosion can be Prevented by limiting the amount of acids that come into contact with your teeth. Reducing how often you eat or drink anything acidic and try and limit how long it is in your mouth- you can use a straw while drinking acidic drinks to reduce contact with the teeth. Drink fluoridated water rather than soft drink, sport drinks or juices Seek medical treatment for management of reflux or vomiting... Rinse with water after eating or drinking anything acidic Use a soft bristled tooth brush Make sure you wait at least 30 minutes after exposure to acids before brushing See your dentist for a dental splint to reduce wear caused by tooth grinding. If you find your mouth is dry, drink some water or chew on some sugar free gum to help saliva production- saliva helps to reduce the effect that acids have on the teeth. If you do suffer from Dental Erosion your dentist will be able to provide you with information on which treatments will be most effective for you. Some of these restorative treatments may be helpful in treating erosion. Veneers Crowns and bridges Dentures Dental implants If you have any questions or concerns about your oral health, please dont hesitate to contact our team at Blackheath Dental on (02)4787 8009 See more

20.01.2022 Lets talk about Gum disease. Gum disease or Periodontal disease is the inflammation and infection of the gums which is caused by plaque(a thick film of bacteria that builds up on the teeth and hardens into tartar/calculus). Bacteria in plaque and calculus cause inflammation(gingivitis) which damages the gums, built up plaque can be removed by your dentist and can be minimized by thorough dental care at home including flossing and brushing daily. The Advanced stage of gum Dis...ease is called periodontitis and can cause serious damage to the teeth and gums. Some of the signs of periodontitis include Red, swollen, painful or bleeding gums Gums that are shrinking away from the teeth Bad breath Bad taste in the mouth Abscesses between teeth and gums Loose or drifting teeth- noticing gaps between the teeth. Six monthly dental check-ups allow your dentist to keep track of your oral health. Your dentist or Oral health Therapist will be able to remove build up of plaque and calculus through a technique called scaling, or for deeper pockets of plaque, root planning is used to remove build up from below the gum line. Regular removal of Plaque and calculus helps protect your gums from bacteria and inflammation caused by it. X-rays can also help to determine the bone health around the teeth. Regular oral health maintenance is the best prevention for periodontal disease. If you are concerned about periodontal disease you can ask your dentist for further information on plaque control techniques and an oral health schedule tailored to your specific needs. See more

16.01.2022 Sugar + Bacteria = Acid Acid + Teeth + Time = Tooth Decay Certain mouth bacteria that live on the teeth’s surface consume the sugar we eat daily and turn it into acid. The acid then pulls the minerals out from the tooth’s surface causing it to weaken. This process happens every time we eat or drink. If these acid attacks occur over and over again but no protection or prevention provided to the teeth, this can result in tooth decay. ... Source: ADA Photo: jcomp/freepik

14.01.2022 Dental Erosion A two-part Story- Part 1 Have you heard the term erosion and wondered what it is and how it can happen to your teeth? Dental Erosion is the loss of enamel and tooth structure from frequent exposure to acids. Tooth enamel dissolves progressively, exposing the softer, butter-coloured dentine under the surface which causes pain and sensitivity. Abscess and loss of tooth can occur if left untreated. Enamel loss caused by erosion can be slight to severe- in severe... cases the teeth can be dissolved down to the gum line. What causes Dental Erosion? Exposing your teeth to acids can cause dental erosion- These acids can be found in many every day food and drinks and several medications. The most common sources of Acids include; Drinks such as fruit juice, wine, carbonated drinks (including sugar free sodas) and sports drinks Foods such as citrus fruit Medications eg. Vitamin C, aspirin and some iron preparations People who experience gastric reflux or recurrent vomiting are also at risk to exposure to strong acids. It is recommended that you avoid brushing for at least 30 minutes after exposure to acid. Dry mouth can also lead to dental erosion. Saliva plays an important role in reducing the effect of acids on the teeth. If you often have a dry mouth, erosion may damage your teeth more quickly. Look out for Part 2 Next week- we will talk about Prevention and Treatment of Dental Erosion

13.01.2022 |Dental Implant Part 2| Dental Implants require one or more surgical procedures, a thorough evaluation is required to prepare for the implant process. This evaluation includes: Comprehensive dental exam. Review of your medical history.... Treatment plan- this plan takes into account how many teeth need replacing and the health of the jawbone and remaining teeth. The Dental implant process is done in several stages those stages are generally; Removal of damaged tooth/teeth Placement of the Dental implant Bone growth and healing Abutment placement Artificial tooth placement The entire implant process can take several months from start to finish, with most of that time devoted to healing and waiting for the growth of new bone to support the Dental Implant. Once the gum has healed, more impressions are made of the mouth and remaining teeth to make the crown/artificial tooth. The crown can't be placed until the jawbone is strong enough to support use of the new tooth. #blackheathdental #dentist #dentalimplant #implant See more

05.01.2022 What are Dental Implants? A dental Implant is an alternative to dentures or bridges for a missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, where they act as the roots of missing teeth. Over time bone grows around the implant and holds it into place. Once the bone has secured the implant in place, a solid support is now available for an artificial tooth or crown. The artificial tooth is made to match existing teeth and is attached to the implant. The implant tooth looks and functions much like a real tooth. #blackheathdental #dentist #dental #bluemountains #blackheath #implants
