25.01.2022 FOUND!! Beau has now been found and is back with his dad! We are all very relieved. Beaus Dad is very grateful to you all. Thank you to our lovely Blackheath and Blue Mountains community for your assistance in finding him! His owner feels that it made all the difference in getting him back. Please keep a look out for Beau! Also please spread the word that he has been taken. Do not leave your dogs unattended!

25.01.2022 This lovely dog has been sighted running loose tonight at BH airstrip. Passers-by were not able to catch him/her. Sorry we dont know whos pup this is by sight, but please share around to find his/her worried owner!

23.01.2022 Today will be HOT. Please consider all our pets and wildlife in this weather. Provide lots of water, shade and cool places. Dont feel bad if you have to skip your pups walk! Their health is more important than skipping their exercise :)

23.01.2022 We have a new puppy preschool course beginning next week. Puppy preschool is for pups aged 8-14 weeks and their new parents. This age is a critical time for socialisation, so puppy school helps give them positive interactions and associations with other puppies. The course is also jam-packed full of information that will help you raise a happy and well adjusted pup, such as basic obedience training, healthcare, nutrition, toilet training, grooming, and so much more! You also get a chance to meet other puppy owners, troubleshoot issues at home, and best of all your puppy gets to have FUN! This is great for when they return to the practice for their vet visits- they love to come in! We do have one spot left in the next course, so if youre interested in attending, please call Bec at the practice.

21.01.2022 Did anyone loose this?

21.01.2022 Happy Christmas to all our fur family and their humans!

18.01.2022 We know a few purr-ers like this!

17.01.2022 Pets and Christmas trees...

16.01.2022 Thank you all for making Blackheath Vet Clinic the best practice to work at! We are so very grateful to have such responsible client who treat their pets as family- we love our clients and our patients! We wish you and your fur babies a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year! Heres our opening times over the holiday period. Clients can also call our after hours number outside of these times if you have an emergency- hopefully you wont need to!

15.01.2022 Now that the warmer weather has arrived, please be snake aware! They are out and about now, and this time of year is usually when they are most venomous. Also keep in mind that baby snakes are just as deadly as adults. This means: No off lead runs in the bush for your dog Keep cats indoors... Clear debris from around your house Keep grass short Symptoms of snake bite are variable. Watch out for vomiting, lethargy, collapse, bruising, and blood in urine, faeces or vomit. The sooner you present your pet for treatment, the better the chances of the outcome- if youre concerned, please dont wait. Treatment is extremely expensive. Take this as an opportunity to consider what you would do for your pet in an emergency such as this. Planning helps you keep a clear head in stressful times! 15.01.2022 A beautiful girl looking for a home. Please share if you can.

15.01.2022 weve met a few!

15.01.2022 There are snakes around already this spring. This one in Blackheath, near Prince George St - identified by NPWS as a Tiger Snake - about 1M long. Contrary to w...hat many of us think, snakes are also around in winter but are less active. Thanks to Carol G. for the photo.

14.01.2022 Hehe, so thats where our cats get their advice from...

13.01.2022 Wow, the pace has really picked up this month at Blackheath Vet! Its our RSPCA month, which has kept us on our toes. Weve met some gorgeous patients that are looking for their furrever homes. So if youre looking for a new family member, check out and support our local RSPCA. Just look at these cuties: https://www.adoptapet.com.au/search

13.01.2022 Well, thats a predicament! Happy Monday!

12.01.2022 Well, we have been very busy here at BVC! We have had RSPCA month, and Jackie has had a well deserved break. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from the veterinary dental specialist who gave the team a wonderful info session. We learnt some great tips and tricks, which we will pass on to our lovely patients and their people. Dental care is essential to maintaining your pets health! We would love to discuss this with you so if youd like to learn more, just speak to one of our friendly team. We have some great info to pass on to you!

12.01.2022 We apologise for being a bit quiet on the Facebook front. The clinic has been really busy! Weve been having a wonderful time overall, with some great outcomes for our patients. As we come in to winter, we want to help you keep your seniors in the best possible shape. Heres a few options for you to help keep your older pets pain-free this winter. There are lots of supplements available for joint support in dogs and cats. These can help reduce inflammation and lubricate the j...oints, helping your pet to feel better and either not need pain relief, or reducing the dose you need to give. Its also really important to start these supplements early, as they can protect the joint and prevent or slow decline.Cats are especially good at hiding their symptoms! -PAW Osteosupport capsules are a Green Lipped Sea Mussel (GLSM) powder containing high levels of Omega 3 and chondroitin. They are very palatable capsules, and you can empty the powder directly on to the food- even the fussy cats like the taste! -Glyde chews are made for dogs, and contain both GLSM, glucosamine, and chondroitin. -Fish oil is also an important supplement, and assists multiple conditions. PAW make a veterinary strength one, or if you buy capsules, we can calculate the dose for you. Just give us a call with the EPA and DHA strength and we will work it out. Dont be surprised if its more than you expect... -There is also the Hills JD diet which incorporates joint health in to the food, so you dont have to be supplementing. -Dogs can also have a series of injections to help with joint lubrication. These significantly improve mobility, and are affordable. Please speak to your vet if youd like to know more. -Make sure your pet is not carrying excess weight. Part of the inflammation cycle takes place in fat cells, so besides adding to the load your pet has to carry, more fat=more inflammation. -Pain relief- dont be afraid to offer your pet medications if they need it. We have several options for pain relief now, so we can use them safely under the guidance of your vet. Remember, your pet cant have exactly the same drugs as we can (ibuprofen is fatal!), so dont go self medicating. Theres so much we can offer our seniors. Come and get your pet a winter check up with your favourite vet!

12.01.2022 On Friday, we treated a dog for paralysis tick. This dog has not been out of the area. This is highly unusual, however the distribution range of the deadly paralysis tick is spreading. Over the last few weeks, veterinary hospitals in Canberra who have not had paralysis ticks before, have also reported multiple tick cases who have not been out of the area. ... Whist this case is, at this stage, a one-off we would hate to see more of our patients be affected. Especially when preventative products are available and affordable. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO - Protect your pet with preventive products- talk to us about whats best for your pet - Daily tick search your pets, ask us how if you are unsure - Be aware of the symptoms of tick paralysis, the earlier it is detected the better the outcome - Spread the word to other members of the community - Talk to your family about what you would do if your pet gets a tick, and consider how you would be able to afford treatment SYMPTOMS Please note that unfortunately cats cover their symptoms very effectively. You will need to be observing them closely to detect changes. Cats are also more difficult to treat as they are more likely to have an allergic reaction to the tick anti-serum than dogs are. The earlier indications that your pet has a tick are: a change in bark or meow, vomiting or coughing, wobbliness of the hind legs or repeatedly sitting down after a few steps. This may be more obvious if you watch your pet climbing stairs. This progresses to significant paralysis where your pet cannot stand, drooling, panting, and loss of gag reflex. As symptoms progress, death will result. WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOUR PET MAY HAVE A TICK Dont waste too much time looking for one. Sometimes they are impossible to find. Keep your pet calm and quiet. Stay calm yourself so that your pet doesnt react to your own stress. Get your pet to the vet immediately, this is definitely an emergency! Your pet will need to be hospitalised and treated with tick anti-serum as soon as possible. The faster they are treated, the better the outcome will be.

12.01.2022 Appropriate for this sort of snuggle-under-the-doona weather!

12.01.2022 we’ve met a few!

11.01.2022 Today is a day of remembrance, including our furry companions. Lest we forget.

11.01.2022 Hello everyone! We have had the busiest few weeks in recent memory! Thank you for your patience with us during this time. We are wanting to get the work out to our local community that there have now been several confirmed paralysis tick cases in Blackheath. This means that all dogs and cats need to be on tick preventative, at least over the summer months, if not year round. These ticks are absolutely deadly, and extremely difficult to find, so dont assume that you will f...ind them in a search. Once attached, they can cause symptoms within 3 days (even if you remove them), and once affected, your pet will need treatment. It is far easier and safer to use a preventative, than to treat for a paralysis tick bite. Please get in touch with any of our team if you have any questions, concerns, or if you would like to discuss what is best for your pet. https://www.abc.net.au//preventing-tick-deaths-in-/7788346

06.01.2022 Part of our job in the veterinary industry is to stay current with the latest information and advancements available with continual education. Members of our team are heading to Queensland next week to attend the FASAVA Veterinary Congress, where we can grow our brains! We are looking forward to bringing some great information back with us, so we can offer your pet the best of care. This will only mildly interrupt our service to you. We will be closed in the afternoon of Thur...sday 10th (but open in the morning as per usual), and open on Friday 11th and Monday 14th with Dr Sharon. Dr Sharon is an experienced Veterinarian and a lovely person. We are very lucky to have her help us out. Nurse Bec was very grateful for her help and knowledge last week when her naughty collie dog helped herself to some wooden skewer sticks. This could have been a very dangerous situation, but thankfully all is well now. Please pop in and say hello to welcome Dr Sharon! See more

05.01.2022 Theres a nasty flu bug going around! Unfortuately, 2 of our team are out of action, and Dr Jess is on leave. This means that its been down to Dr James and Bec to man-the-fort! Hopefully a nice weekend of rest will get the team back to normal for next week. We wish everyone whos feeling under the weather a very speedy recovery!

05.01.2022 We hope youve all had a fantastic start to the year. Weve discovered that our whole team, bar James, are all January babies! What are the odds?! In the clinic, we have seen an increase in flea outbreaks with the cycles of hot and wet weather. Fleas on your pet are not an indication that you have a dirty home- they are predominantly an environmental problem. This is because the adult fleas only account for around 5% of the total flea population. Your pet can pick up fleas f...rom long grass or coming in to contact with other animals. They can also be brought in to your yard by other animals such as wandering cats. Fleas are also very hardy and have a long life cycle- it takes 6 months for the youngest eggs to mature in to adult fleas. This is what makes them very difficult to eradicate! If you get fleas in your household, you will need to treat all pets continuously for at least 6 months to break the life cycle. You may also need to treat the environment (your house and yard). If your pet is itching, come and speak to one of our friendly team for personalised advice on what is best for your situation. (photo from sentinalpet(dot)com) See more

01.01.2022 KEEP PETS SECURE DURING NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS A friendly reminder to make preparations to keep your pets safe and secure during New Year celebrations. We r...ecommend keeping your pets indoors and providing a quiet, safe place for them to hide during fireworks. Unexpected, unofficial fireworks can happen in the days leading up to New Years eve so be prepared and make sure your animals are secure in the evenings. It is also good idea if you are having a party to keep your pets in another part of the house as they may not understand all the merriment and could become fearful. Enjoy your New Year celebrations knowing your beloved pets are safe and secure.
