25.01.2022 Farming is exercise for the mind and body

25.01.2022 I couldn't resist sharing this

25.01.2022 The farm is unbelievably green for this time of the year and I tried to get some Bull pics this evening. I got a couple of good ones of NEddy Munster but he seems better at Photo bombing the young boys pics.

24.01.2022 Looks like most of our friends should also get some decent rain out of this system. 13mm today gives us nearly 40mm this month so far. Some years we get single figure January rainfalls so, hopefully, this heralds a good year.

23.01.2022 I love watching the bulls at joining. I love the wine snob face they make as they assess whether or not a female is ready for them. Polgara has been courted by Neddie Munster this week, and heres a photo ...

22.01.2022 This is Black Label Phoebe and her first calf, BL Rebecca by Squizzy. Phoebe is one of Barregowa Gambler's daughters and was named for Holden Caulfield's sister in 'Catcher in the Rye', so no prizes for guessing where Rebecca's name comes from ("Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."). Rebecca is a week old in this photo.

21.01.2022 Weve been busy with all sorts of things lately, and so have the cows - we have 19 calves (10f, 9m), 16 Squizzlettes and 3 by Neddie Munster (his first crop). Heres a photo from last month of some of this years calves.

21.01.2022 We occasionally get calls from neighbours after assistance or advice about difficult births in cattle. Im not really much help as we have only had to help one cow in ten years and that was probably more me panicking than her needing help. As a clue to how easily these Lowline cattle calve I had this experience yesterday. I had just fed out a round bale of wheaten straw at the top of this years calving paddock and did a ten minute tour of the paddock looking for new calves. A...s I drove back past the row of girls getting stuck into the feed I realised that one of them had a head and two feet sticking out of her rear end, while still standing up and scoffing straw. By the time I parked the ute 30 metres away and headed back over to see if she was OK, she had laid down and given birth and was standing up again to clean the calf! Fair enough she is about 9 years old, very feed oriented and used to this but, seriously?!

21.01.2022 Ludo had a heifer yesterday, so here is Black Label Regan - our fifth heifer for the season. This is Ludo's third daughter in a row : Portia (by Ballarat Grammar Fordy), Mistress Quickly (by Whitby Farm Squizzy) and now Regan, also a Squizzlette. Ludo is Kasino's full sister (both by Barregowa Gambler, out of Barregowa Fern).

21.01.2022 I told you in the last post about Glamour, one of our foundation cows - who rarely ever looked pregnant, but always presented us with a lovely calf. Here's a photo of Glamour with her calf that I took this afternoon - nothing sleepy about this girl

21.01.2022 The ghost of Magic present ... I don't know where she found the clay / chalk, there's a small quarry in the calving paddock - but I'm sure she felt good about it. BL Magic's calf (by BL Neddie Munster) is three weeks old here.

21.01.2022 I had to play with this a bit but the silhouettes are still impressive. NEddy Munster jumped a fence to get in with young Playboy and Player and they have all been getting along surprisingly well. No cycling cows nearby helps a lot. :)

21.01.2022 Theres always something ready to disrupt the planned schedule on a farm. The giant Yellow Diggasaurus has developed a prostate problem in its hydraulic system. Seriously, it had a more impressive leak than my great uncle Dan Sloan in his heyday. With no parts immediately available and after being advised that the flange might need rewelding I was relieved to discover that a couple of loose bolts on the flange had caused an O-ring blow out of Walrus proportions. I have a spare to fit but will check with my local hydraulic shop so he can sell me another one for some ridiculous price while complaining about .... something. :)

20.01.2022 Either we were a bit too late for the sunlight or I should have travelled a bit further before rolling out the vetch. The expecting cows didnt care, they were just happy for a bit of dry feed. No-one is really bagging up yet so they may be waiting for the next batch of atrocious weather.

20.01.2022 That wonderful feeling when you have finally had the chance to put out a couple of tons or so of DAP on the pastures and the rain is falling soft and steady overnight. There are no frosts forecast for the next month so hopefully the rye will keep growing and if not, there is firewood split already. We have the biggest, plumpest group of calves we have had in 11 years of this fun and games and our wet cows are in their best Autumn condition yet. Weaning is sometime in the next... week or two and I promise Ill get some photos up There is pancake mix made in the fridge for the morning for the Studmistress and coffee for me. Stay safe and virus free folks. See more

19.01.2022 It is nice to know that he is keen to work, but.... Unfortunately at somewhere between 700-800kg and Lowline height, Squizzy is a gate killer. Second gate in three days, need to remember to put live wires across all gates he can get to.

19.01.2022 We split the heifers that Ive earmarked for registering and joining away from the rest of the weaners last week, so that I could focus on them. There are four Squizzlettes (QTee, Ms Quickly, Quintessence and Quey) and two Munsters (Quicksilver and Quidditch). I went out to give them their buckets today, and they must have heard me open the gates, because by the time Id set up everything, they were trooping into the yards. I couldnt get photos of all of them, but here are some I managed today ...

18.01.2022 If you want heifers, we have heifers. Bloody good heifers I reckon. :) These are just some of them looking at Playboy. They rate him.

18.01.2022 The steers were a bit lighter than I expected perhaps because they had been yarded for 24 hours. Still the older boy is 419kg and the younger boys are 331, 350 and 355. Still the young ones will be wormed and finished over the next 3-6 months.

18.01.2022 I was helping Craig to change the water setup in the yards today, and while I was surplus to requirements, I went over to say hello to Squizzy (he was closest). I am not surprised by the number of people who are fond of him - he is such a lovely boy, so here is a photo of him ...

17.01.2022 Rabbits. Rabbits were apparently the problem that led to Emperor Qin Shi Huang joining up sections of fortifications to create the Great Wall of China around 200BC. Our problem at Black Label Lowlines also hops but has a long tail and is marsupial.... The first nations phrase for our area is Old Man Kangaroo Resting Ground so it is no suprise that they are here but I am sick of feeding them. To try to improve this situation we are building The Great Wall of Coimadai. Now lets see if we can get the Mexicans to pay for it.

17.01.2022 We decided to keep a couple of bulls from last years (2018) drop and see how they developed. The Studmistress was always sure about Playboy but I still like Player. They are a bit light which isnt surprising given our season but I am happy with them.

17.01.2022 It's been a cold, wet and windy few days and surprisingly only one calf was born - perhaps the last pregnant girls stood with their backs to the wind and their calves were blown back in. My gum boots have perished (I don't get to wear gum boots very often, but we've recorded the third best rain year so far since we moved to the farm), so standing around the paddock trying to take photos wasn't fun. Here's a photo of Polgara and her calf from a week or so ago. Polgara is Gl...amour's daughter. Glamour is also Phoebe's grandmother. Glamour is a 'sleeper' cow. She never really looks pregnant, and when you turn around, she has a large udder and a good calf on the ground. Polgara and Phoebe have done the same thing. For the last couple of weeks before they dropped their calves, I would look at them and think, 'Are they, aren't they?', but Glamour and her offspring haven't let us down. See more

16.01.2022 What a cracker of a winters day.

16.01.2022 What a lovely day with the handling yards full of weaners.

15.01.2022 Oh yes, we eat our beef. It is spectacular. Gilding the Lily here with 30 hour Sous Vide cooked Topside.

14.01.2022 A couple of baby photos from today's visit to the paddock - illustrating the phrase, 'dead to the world', It's hard work being a calf

10.01.2022 This years weaners are huge! Some of these little buggers were over (Oopsie over 200kg, top weights 226, 227) a couple of months ago at weaning and we are trying to keep them from going backwards over winter. It is lovely having them close to the house at this time of year.

09.01.2022 I couldnt resist fiddling with these shots of Playboy when I previewed them - it made me smile, so I hope it does for you too

09.01.2022 The weaners have been quiet today - only occasionally calling out. Ive convinced one steer calf that having someone to scratch around his ears and chin is a very good thing. Craig promised more photos, but Ive been too busy in with the weaners to take many, but heres a couple from yesterday.

08.01.2022 I stopped to say hello to the bulls this afternoon, and I know spring is coming, because their paddock is covered in hair (which I may have contributed to). Neddie had put such effort into his beauty treatment, that I worked on his tail instead. I told him I wanted to take a photo, and he laughed at me, but then he showed me that he is also a handsome boy

08.01.2022 I've posted a photo of this season's first calf, and now here's a photo of the latest boy (three days old), out of Black Label Nova (who is a Tannhauser granddaughter) by Whitby Farm Squizzy. This is the tenth calf, and the eighth male.

08.01.2022 It has been a shockingly dry Summer so far but we woke to 3mm in the gauge and a stream of drizzle set for most of the day. Hopefully it will continue East and North to help with the fires.

08.01.2022 We are gratified by the interest in the P heifers, so Ive been out in the paddocks today trying to get some good(?) photos to share them with you. So here they are - Ill add comments to the photos, so youll know who is who.

07.01.2022 I promised to try and get a couple of photos of the sleeping calves from a couple of days ago. Fern and her boy were walking away when we came upon the mothers today, but Glee and her calf came over to say hello, and here's a photo of him - you can tell it's Glee's calf because of the tag in his ear.

07.01.2022 This video says everything there is to say about the benefits of Australian Lowlines

06.01.2022 Squizzy has had three months ambling up and down hills and chasing girls but doesnt seem to have lost any condition and would appear to find it all a bit amusing.

06.01.2022 Great day breaking in a couple of junior farm hands.

05.01.2022 This is Party Girl's sister-cousin, Black Label Pepper. They're both Fordy's daughters, and Pepper is out of BL Jubilation. Jubilation was Karnival's full sister (Barregowa Celebration - Barregowa Lochinvar), and Karnival was Party Girl's dam. Pepper was also reluctantly added to the list of females that weren't to be joined. When we last weighed the 'P' heifers a few weeks ago (and saw Party Girl beginning to bag up), Pepper weighed 412kg, while most of the others were around 370kg. I don't think she's pregnant - she hasn't started to bag up, but we've moved her in with the maternal group - just in case.

04.01.2022 This is Black Label Playboy, a half brother to Neddie Munster (they are both Gamblers sons). Ive trained most of our stock to wear a halter but Playboy is the first one to try and kill his halter. Last week, I left him tied up unsupervised - for no more than 15 minutes - and I returned to find he had chewed the end of the halter rope and had unravelled about 30cm. Craig repaired the halter for me, and my new strategy is to tie Playboy to a post that has two rings, so t...hat I can tie the end to the other side of the post where hopefully he cant reach it. Every animal has a unique personality, Playboy has a very high sense of his own worth. The other day when I called the boys in, every one trotted over to the yards, except Playboy, who walked regally over. I think the 13 heifers on the other side of the fence had something to do with that (I did catch him sneaking a look over his shoulder to make sure they were admiring him). See more

04.01.2022 This is Black Label Party Girl (out of BL Karnival, by Ballarat Grammar Fordy) and her five day old heifer calf (by Whitby Farm Squizzy). Party Girl is very pretty - I think she has a beautiful head - but because we've had 23 heifers born in the last two seasons, she did not make the cut, and she was put in the cull group. You may remember at the end of last year, Craig writing about Squizzy breaking through gates to get to the group of females that weren't to be joined. We thought we had addressed this issue, but it appears that Party Girl has lived up to her name, and this heifer is the result. I guess Party Girl did not agree with my decision - in honour of her great grandmother, Barregowa Celebration, I may have to call this heifer, 'Revelation'.

04.01.2022 One week into calving and we have 7 calves on the ground. Four heifers and three males. Five Squizzlettes and two Munsters(a boy and a girl). I love this time of year and it should just get better over the next month as more calves arrive and they get more playful. The mothers and calves have been great this year, really easy to tag with no stress for any of us.... This pic is my favourite half blind cow Glee with QTee other mothers and calves in the background. Bliss. See more

04.01.2022 Groovy with her boy(possibly Quinn the Eskimo) and Magic with Quicksilver. Great cows if I do say so myself.

03.01.2022 Do you remember reading about Prudence, who wanted to take Patience's calf when it was born last month? She had a heifer four days later, her and Playboy's first daughter. Both Patience and Prudence are well and so are their calves, and they are each looking after their own. We've decided to name Prudence's calves for athletes, and so this girl is called Black Label Raelene. I'm not so sure this was a clever idea. Raelene is living up to her namesake and is very fast. She does not yet have a tag in her ear - but she will,

02.01.2022 One of the lesser known cuts of beef. This is a Hanger steak also known as the butchers steak. It forms part of the diaphragm between the gut and chest cavities and does almost no work. One of the advantages of on farm butchering. :)

02.01.2022 I was trying to get a decent pic of these fat little buggers but better luck tomorrow perhaps. One is (hopefully) being killed on Thursday for the home freezer and the other 3 have a couple of months to go. well know more tomorrow when we run them over the scales. We had to pop them into the yards for a day or two so we could actually close some gates and move them through. I love seeing cattle with grass half way up their rib cages. :)

01.01.2022 Big day today in the best weather we have had for a week or two. Weaning weighing and relocating last years calves. There are some chunky little monkeys there Ive got to tell you. It is gonna be a noisy night as the little ones are next to the house an already having a whinge. :) Well get some better photos tomorrow hopefully.
