02.01.2022 Check out this beautiful wedding dress! Heidi made this one-of-a-kind dress for her nieces special day. Keep reading for more insider details. From Heid...i K. on 6/28- "Can I tell you how much I LOVE my Ovation?? I just had to share the wedding dress I made for my niece Lizs wedding last Saturday. Could not have done the 8 yard silk chiffon hem without it. Such a wonderful collaboration between us. She did a fantastic job in sourcing all the appliques, and dying most of them to get just the right selection of hues. We designed the dress together, with her having the final "say" in choice of fabrics and design. The bodice is two layers of silk organza to match her skin tone. The skirt has a bottom layer of organic cotton sateen (from a luxury bed sheet so I could get the width I needed) that I dyed in coffee to give it a slightly darker shade. The top layer is silk chiffon. The hem of the skirt is a full circle - 8 yards around! The narrow hem on the silk chiffon was a breeze using my Baby Lock Ovation. I starched the entire hemline, then used simple three-thread narrow hem. I LOVE that serger. I used to sew custom bridal gowns as a business, and when I got my Ovation, it was a game-changer. Never had a problem with the finest of fabrics. I added pockets with a cute print for a hidden detail. My mom passed away in 2007, and in her things I found a boxed sixpence with a note saying "For Lizs wedding day. Love, Gram." (Something old, something new... and a sixpence in her shoe.) Lizs dad drilled a hole in it so I could add it to the bodice since Liz was wearing sandals. All the appliques are sewn on by hand. The appliques on the silk chiffon overskirt are lace that I cut from the dress that Lizs mom (my sister) and grandma (my mom) wore on their wedding day (circa 1952). The buttons on the back were also from that dress. It was truly a labor of love."
