24.01.2022 Black Mountain Modern is a member of the Alternative Technology Association. ATA Why? They produce reliable and robust reports on all segments of the alternative technology market such as:... In manningham street project we have used their reports to help specify the very complex systems that go into a Zero Energy building. Solar Photovoltaic, hot water systems, high energy efficient appliances, ultra high performance insulation, window glazing systems and window film types. Sustainable and environmentally friendly technology is also well covered by the ATA through their "Sanctuary Magazine". We have used their data to help specify everything from low embodied energy bricks, to low VOC timber floor finishes. Also rainwater management systems and recycling setups. Bang for buck its the best support we have in building sophisticated low energy use homes. Thanks ATA for all your advice and support http://www.ata.org.au

20.01.2022 How would you like to be breathing this air everyday? China's smog this week can be seen from space. Many chinese say they "simply cannot breathe". This smog is produced largely by the number of coal powered energy plants that China has. ... This is what we in Australia are moving away from. Leaving pollution, and investing in renewable energy. What do you think? Are we doing the right thing?

10.01.2022 Ever wished you could walk away from expensive monthly power bills? A new generation of battery storage systems are coming. Australia’s energy market is in a major transition, with solar power becoming increasingly mainstream and energy customers facing more complex choices about where they purchase energy from. New technologies, and how they integrate with the design and construction of buildings, are presenting new challenges and opportunities to the building industry.... Recently published research titled what happens when we un-plug has shown that as energy storage technologies such as batteries become more affordable, driven by the same competitive global market that saw significant reductions in solar panel costs, stand alone power systems are likely to become financially viable before 2020. The research suggests that greenfield or major brownfield developments could establish stand alone power infrastructure, owned and managed locally, to deliver clean, reliable energy, cheaper than the centralised grid alternative. 07.01.2022 Melbourne is Changing. the Australian Bureau of Statistics forecasts melbourne population to be about 8million people. What is melbournes population today?... About 4.25million To accomodate the growth in the number of people who will live within existing suburbs, heres what needs to happen: This picture shows an activity centre, say for example a portion of the suburb of brunswick. melbourne will need 93 such activity centres across the city. each activity centre will need to have about 186 x 8 storey apartment buildings. Each activity centre will need this many new apartment buildings because it needs to provide 11,910 new dwellings for the 2056 population forecast. Thats 11,910 new apartments/dwellings in each of 93 activity centres across melbourne. What do you think about this? Im excited. Our city will grow and become more interesting than ever. Imagine if all these buildings were zero energy buildings? and they recycled 100% of their rubbish on site? We live in an era of unprecedented and rapid change. Embrace it!

06.01.2022 Happy to announce that we are about 4 weeks away from starting construction of our 8 star development in Parkville. These images show some of the design workup material.

05.01.2022 Part of our 95% recycle/reuse plan for the Parkville Net Zero townhouse project. Wallpaper panels and iconic light sets from the old 60s house. Want to know how we can recycle 95% of a home rather than send it to landfill? ... Heres our action plan for the Parkville site: All the concrete will be crushed down and recycled by Alex Fraser Group. The bricks will be cleaned and supplied to Paddys Brickworks. Timber frame and two of the timber fence lines will be cut to size and used to supply 4 soild fuel heaters for the next 2 winters. Roofing iron and flashing will be recycled as scrap metal to Elgin street Scrap metal. sanitary fixtures and plumbing lines will be sold to Elgin St scrap metal as either recyclable scrap, or on sold as vintage fixtures. Windows and doors will be sold on to Steptoes renovation supplies in collingwood. Vintage light fittings will be sold at Leonard Joel auction house. Two vintage wallpaper walls will be carefully cut out and sold at Leonard Joel auction house. Carpets will go through a recycling machine at Laverton. Tiles will be crushed down and recycled by Alex Fraseer Group. Floorboards will be salvaged and either re-used or on sold. What we cant recycle or re-use: Single length of treated pine fence line cannot be recycled and will have to go to mixed waste landfill unfortunately. We will not be able to recycle will be the old plaster. Oil based paints prevent us from breaking the plaster down in our soil "fill" layers on site.

04.01.2022 Did you know? Wind Farms reduced wholesale power prices by up to 40% in Vic and SA during this summers heat waves. Report released today by Merridian Energy. Power generated by renewables in Solar PV and Wind farms have reduced wholesale energy costs by a third in 2013. Reductions in consumer demand also contributed. There is a myth that renewables are causing our power costs to rise. Merridians report dispels this. Actually they are reducing it. The big retail companies jus...t arent passing the reduced whoelsale costs onto consumers. AParently the Vic Brown Coal companies lobbied the Govt successfully back in 2002 to push back the mandatory renewables targets as they said it would make our power bills too expensive. In this way they delayed renewables comming on line by at least six years for phase one. Support Renewable Energy Initiatives. Our company is spending big bucks on state of the art renewable energy tech for the Manningham Street Project. We will be posting all the details of the systems on our page.

02.01.2022 Imagine if all the money you spend on heating and electricity bills went into an annual Holliday instead? My current home costs at least $5500 a year to heat, cool, and provide me with electricity. Master Builders are at the forefront of building a new generation of homes for Australians. These homes cost no more to build than a regular home, and they are very cheap to run. ... Better for the environment, and better for the bank account. Life is stressful enough without having the headaches of endless utility bills. Ive found a very simple article made by Master Builders in SA. It has loads of information on how an 8 Star Home works. And how it saves you money. Below is the Link http://www.mbasa.com.au//Welcome_to_green_living_home_plaq

02.01.2022 Want to go Solar but dont know who to speak to? Give these guys a call. Ask for Meryn van Elburg - The Viking. Meryn has advised me on a few alternative tech setupos over the years for different sustainable homes weve built. His advice is always spot on! Ive paid ESD consutants for their assessments on what to put in some of our builds, I think Meryn has more knowledge than most of them. Plus his company will supply and install the hardware. His advice is free.... https://www.enviroshop.com.au See more

01.01.2022 What does a sustainable kitchen need? Most importantly: It needs to not make you sick! We have enough environmental oestrogens and unstable plastics in our lives. A healthy kitchen needs zero nasties. Its where we eat after all.... Parkville Net Zero Project means we need all our kitchens to be free of nasty VOC's, and synthetic materials. What we are looking for is: Recycled materials throught the kitchen system, bench tops in particular. Water based coatings so that should they ever go to landfill they can just break down like timber. Durable hard wearing surfaces that will last 20 years. Heat and moisture proof. E Zero certified carcasses. Meaning no nasty MDF or composites packed with formaldehyde. This week we are talking with Travis Dean from Cantilever Kitchens in Brunswick. Local craftsmen. All about environmentally safe kitchens. Hers some pics below. L to R. Main showroom. Second showroom. Eco by Consentino bench top: Made of recycled Glass. Quite beautiful.
