Australian actor Paul Hogan was born in Lightning Ridge. 768km from Sydney & 742km from Brisbane. The Yuwaalaraay people are the traditional owners. There are 6000 active claims, 800 are regularly mined. Halley’s Comet, the largest uncut black opal was found in 1986.

22.01.2022 C H A R L I E - A miner from Bathurst began his opal mining profession at White Cliffs with no success. He started serious prospecting on one of the ridges, later recognised as Nettleton’s Hill, on the Angledool station. This was to become the site of Lightning Ridge. In 1903, Charlie Nettleton sold the first recorded parcel of opal gems from the field, receiving only $30 That same parcel would have earned 50 times that amount just 5 years later!

The water found in the bore baths comes from the Great Artesian Basin and is approximately two million years old The Lightning Ridge open-air Artesian Baths were opened in 1962. When mining, nobbies are tricky to see with the naked eye, therefore, they need washing to find them Ordinarily, the best quality opal has been found in nobbies. The main street is sealed, curbed & gutted with rows of regular shops - and there is a LOT of money around! Then there is the wildly eccentric - a house made from bottles, the rough cement "castle" of the Astronomer's Monument; surrounded by mullock heaps, that literally hundreds of obsessed miners have searched & dug for the black opals that made this town famous.

13.01.2022 H I S T O R Y - The name Lightning Ridge is believed to derive from an old story where a shepherd, his dog and more than 600 sheep were killed during a massive electrical storm, while sheltering on one of the ridges in the area. The black opal was discovered in Lightning Ridge at the end of the 1880s.They were first found in eroded creek beds and underneath the roots of fallen trees. The first hand sunk shaft was put down by the boundary rider Jack Murray around 1901.

11.01.2022 B O T T L E S - A unique structure with an intriguing show of innovative architecture The Bottle House was built using beer bottles from a stockpile outside a pub in Hebel over the Qld border. Built from 5,800 bottles, this was the home of Arthur Germaine & his wife. It's now a museum displaying old wares, curiosities, gem &rock and bottle collections. The museum is still run by one of the original builders and is worth taking the time to view it & see all the collectables & hear his story.
