21.01.2022 The COVID-related global health inequities faced by Indigenous and LGBTIQSB peoples as stand alone communities are becoming increasingly documented. However, data on those who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and LGBTIQ remain visibly absent. To this end, we have partnered with a University and are currently seeking ethics approval to do this work. This has extended the process - which began back in July with the survey creation - however we believe it to ...be essential to validate the data. Gaps cannot be closed if they are not first established and understood. When complete, the Black Rainbow LGBTIQSB COVID Report will be made available, free of charge, from our website and links will be shared across our social media accounts. Self-determination is recognised as the mechanism for positive outcomes for Indigenous peoples. Black Rainbow was founded and continues to evolve through principles of self-determination informed by our diverse worldviews as culturally, gendered, and sexually diverse peoples. We also have several announcements that we will stagger coming months. The first is our recent partnership with Google, the Indigenous LGBTIQSB Futures Fund. You can read more about the Futures Fund here: https://australia.googleblog.com//black-rainbow-creates-fu

18.01.2022 Dr Charles Perkins Prize: Winners encourage others to pursue academic dreams Liam* was homeless when he started his final year of university. The LGBTQI+ Aboriginal man had escaped challenging personal circumstances and was facing an uncertain future when he reached out to elders and university support staff for help. It was a daunting time but he managed to connect with some key community figures online and secure affordable housing.... "I don't know where I would be without them," he said. Nearly 12 months on, he graduated as one of the top Indigenous academic performers at the University of Sydney. https://www.abc.net.au//charles-perkins-indigenou/12868752

09.01.2022 In the Koori Mail out today. ‘Focus on at risk LGBQTI+SB mob’ Community acceptance is a protective factor against suicide for Indigenous LGBQTI+SB ppl, giving us a sense of belonging. ... Community acceptance also helps protect the LGBQTI+SB community against racism. There are universal risk factors that can affect all people. These include a family history of suicide, previous suicide attempt(s) and feelings of hopelessness and having a history of mental illness for example. For members of the Indigenous LGBQTI+SB community there are risks factors that are both Indigenous and LGBTIQ+ specific that are additional to these universal risk factors. For Indigenous people risk factors include, racism, child removals, unresolved trauma, cultural dislocation, and identity issues. For LGBTIQ+ people risk factors include, lack of family and community acceptance, victimisation, bullying, Internal conflict about sexual orientation and homophobia, transphobia etc. As Indigenous LGBQTI+SB people we are susceptible to universal risk factors as well as those that are Indigenous and LGBQTI+ specific.
