25.01.2022 This will be the new attire at BRH from now on. Better get sewing
25.01.2022 How wonderful our spooky spoonville community looks this morning and the creativity is outstanding. We even have a spooky church now next to our spooky school. But unfortunately we have had some vandalism over the long weekend and if someone ends up with a pumpkin in their front yard we’d really appreciate it if it was returned to the spooky graveyard. We have found the 2nd pumpkin smashed and spread throughout the front gardens which is so disappointing to see. This isn’t ...the first time we’ve been vandalised over the past few months but thought we were on top of it, but it looks like the weekends are a hideout for teens to start little fires, climb on the roof and break the slate tiles, gouge out the stones from the stonewall near the stables and leave their general rubbish in the gardens which most of us have been cleaning up and disposing of on a regular basis. So I ask if anyone sees anything to call the Sandringham police station on 8530 5100 as they have been patrolling the area and are aware of our issues at the moment. It’s been a long 7 months since we’ve opened our doors but looking forward to a fresh start in 2021. See more

22.01.2022 Well we’ve been a little quiet here over the past few months being in lockdown, but we have an announcement to share with you all. As you know our FoBRH President, Carolyn Brown OAM isn’t one to sit idle and has just shared with us that she will be standing for a spot in the upcoming Bayside City Council elections in October. The exciting part is that Carolyn will be standing for the ‘Ebden’ ward. Congratulations Carolyn, they’ll be very lucky to have you onboard.
22.01.2022 UPDATE Neighbourhood watch came to BRH on Monday and kindly used their graffiti buster equipment to remove the horrible etchings in our 164yr old trees. Unfortunately some lowlife decided to return this week and start all over again. We have again contacted the police we are increasing our security in and around the house. We do not know why this is happening but someone has also broken into the ballroom and stolen our new Dyson Stick. They have even unscrewed the holde...r from the wall!! So if anyone has any idea of who desperately needed the Dyson or if theyd like to return it, wed really appreciate it as we the Friends purchased the Dyson from donations from the community. I know we are living in crazy times but lets keep real people. See more

18.01.2022 What fun we had with the community drive by for Lesley Falloons 100th celebrations. Cars tooting, people singing, magnificent flower arrangements, birthday cards aplenty and balloons (Lesleys favourite), even a letter from the Queen! So glad the sun was shining for this beautiful centenarian . **A special thank you to Ribbonlee for the beautiful banner made for this special occasion.
18.01.2022 So the friends committee meet every 6 weeks to discuss whats happening at BRH, open days, events, financials and any new business. Today we thought wed take a step into the 21st century and have a Zoom meeting. Well, it was our first time and this clip below pretty much sums up how our zoom meeting went minus 2 members that couldnt get on. But not to be deterred we will sort it out before we try again next Friday. #everyoneneedsamaya #staysafeeveryone #wewillreturn https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1943756472424993&id=183410325126292
17.01.2022 The first Sunday of every month is Open House Day and we were hopeful that we’d be welcoming you all back today after being closed for many months with a BBQ for Fathers Day. However that’s not to be so we thought let’s look back on what fun we’ve had in the past...and what a past this house has had. We have decided to look ahead to 2021 for any activities being held at BRH with the exception of something coming up next month, but we’ll tell you about that soon. So get a cuppa and look back on all the activities and you might be surprised to see what goes on at the oldest home by the sea. Stay well and a very happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there.

11.01.2022 While Black Rock House is closed, it might be fun the share some history posts from time to time. Here are some 100 year old photos of Melbourne including a pearler of Brighton Beach!
11.01.2022 Amazing reading and history into Black Rock House.
11.01.2022 Spooky Spoonville continues to grow!
11.01.2022 It was a very special morning at BRH as one of our neighbours, Rob played the Last Post and Reveille at Dawn on our front porch. Rob is a professional trumpet player and ex Air Force - where he played in the Band for 17 years. He has done many Last Posts all over Australia but in 1999 it was the Air Forces turn to provide the bugler for the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. He did both the Dawn Service and the service after the morning Parade. He was... given special permission by the ADF to wear his grandfathers medals while in uniform and Bruce Ruxton actually made special mention of this just before he did the Last Post. Robs Mum was ready to burst with pride. We thank you Rob and all your fellow servicemen and women. Lest we forget
11.01.2022 Open house this Sunday 1st March 1-4pm with Devonshire tea being served in the ballroom 1.30-3.30pm. No bookings required.
10.01.2022 Changing faces exhibition celebrates the contribution women make to the Bayside area and encourages women to get involved in local democracy. It was exciting to see 5 volunteers from BRH invited to participate in the exhibit including past President Lesley Falloon OAM and our current President Carolyn Brown OAM.
10.01.2022 If you live in the bayside area and youre in the Ebden Ward (check map below), please pop over to Carolyns new Facebook page and see what shes up to. Carolyn will be posting each Thursday with updates, insights and community activity. #carolynbrownforebden
10.01.2022 Something to look forward to
10.01.2022 Today we were devastated at the sight we found when visiting the house this morning. One of the 164year old Morton Bay Fig trees has been defaced and our sandstone walls have been etched out. Not forgetting that someone thought it was ok to dump rubbish in the gardens, back walkway and on the lawns. Neighbourhood Watch 3193 has been notified along with the Bayside Police. If you saw anything this weekend please dont hesitate to contact us at [email protected]
09.01.2022 #BCSVThrowbackThursday Seen in the yard of Sandringham-Mentone BL (Currers) is HCN 506, a 27 seat Bedford OB with CAC body proudly wearing the mustard yellow l...ivery (Keith Kings photo). It was the first new bus purchased by Currer after he purchased the business in 1949, the bus being new 11/1950 and initially registered SU 216 and re-registered as seen in 1960.The depot was at 141 Beach Road, between Foam and Surf Streets near Parkers Road. Charlie Currer originally traded as Black Rock Motor Service, after acquiring the Balcombe Rd service from Mr A Lewis, primarily running between Mentone Station and the Black Rock VR tram but with some school trips along Beach Rd. In early 1957, the trunk route was extended along Beach Road to Sandringham, with the VR bus from Beaumaris now following the tram route, which had ceased on 5/11/1956. After this northward extension, Charlie Currer then traded as Sandringham Mentone BL. On 3 September 1968 services would reach the new Southland Shopping Centre mecca. Following a period of partnership with Ray Allnutts Sandringham Bus Lines from 7/197010/1971, Charlies son Dennis took over after returning from Europe. Charlie died suddenly in January 1973. 1973 also saw a short stint into charter and school sports work before Dennis became ill and ultimately sold the business. Tom Jones Southland Bus Service took over the 645 & 646 runs on 26 September 1977.

06.01.2022 100 years young today, Happy Birthday Lesley Falloon OAM. Lesley is a trailblazer with vision and determination. Without Lesley BRH may have been demolished back in the 70s, but she pushed the then City of Sandringham council to invest and allow the community to enjoy it. A few years later, Lesley formed the Friends of Black Rock House and we are still going strong 40years on. Happy birthday Lesley
06.01.2022 Finally made it to the Mitre Tavern, Bank Place where Charles Ebden owned 5,6, 7 Collins Street. I dont think anything has changed inside the building in over 170years. How amazing this little tavern has stood the test of time with large buildings all around it.
05.01.2022 Does anyone remember the tram .
04.01.2022 Halloween at Black Rock House 2020. Social distancing is still very important to us all but so is having a little fun. A suggestion from local resident, Katrina Reid was to have a spoonville at BRH so Spooky Spoonville was born. As of 3rd October we welcome you to fill our BRH Cemetery with the scariest ghostly spoons you can create. #ghostly #gravesite #witch #spoonvillemelbourne #bayside #haunted #boo #getcreative #blackrock #creative #halloween at #blackrockhouse

01.01.2022 Visited BRH today and shes prettier than ever. The gardens and lawns look so healthy with the sunshine and rain weve been having. As much as wed like to return and open our doors, were being a little cautious and have decided to reopen on Sunday 6th September 1-4pm for tours and 1.30-3.30 for Devonshire teas. There maybe a few changes we need to make in group sizes but we will notify you prior to the Open Day. Enjoy the photos and we look forward to welcoming you back to BRH. xx
