11.01.2022 Another wonderful class of students participating in one of the beginner's class. The Fire Tools for the Forge is a great place to start and a essential set of tools for the Forge. Lots of forging during the day means lots of fire work. I read in one of my Blacksmithing books where a Reporter was interviewing a formen in a Blacksmith shop and he expressed he was disappointed that the modern day Smith had a lack of sound knowledge in working his fire and fully understood what ...a good fire looks and sounds like. The article was written in 1905. For 26yrs I have regularly used coal and coke fired forges and will endeavor to continue showing and explaining what makes a good, workable fire. Thank you to this class and I look forward to seeing you at the anvil. MG See more

09.01.2022 Been very busy of late and have not had a chance to keep up with FB entries. The Blacksmith's knife has earnt it reputation around the world. It's the knife that he or she could forge up quickly without much fuss. The beauty of the knife first starts with its appearance and lines. The knife should feel comfortable in the hand and of course "balanced". This comes from understanding the mass you have in the blade measuring being close the the mass in the handle. Also if you fav...our the mass in one directions it should always be the handle cause you can acquire length in the blade with a little more drawing out. Mass for steel can be easily worked out using 7.85kg after knowing the area and thickness. The knife class is done after the two beginner classes have been completed. Students have a much better focus on the knife with all the basic understanding of working the forge and the skills gained. We work the steel from various stock sizes to acquire the desired outcome. No stock is supplied cut to shape or notched out for the students convenience. All tools used for the successful completion of the knife is taught and understood and the student then can reproduce the own. Had a great day with this class and revisiting the concept, design and forging of this knife. See more
