24.01.2022 Washing your hands regularly remains one of the most important infection control measures. Sanitising hand gel is great, but you still need to wash your hands. Not just a quick rinse.

22.01.2022 Do you think you have a food allergy that’s ‘not that bad’? The sudden and very sad death of this young man needs to be a lesson for us, our family, friends an...d colleagues. The media story says this young man had lived his life with a 'scratchy throat' after eating prawns or eggs and that he was never formally diagnosed with food allergy. As an organisation that strives to educate and support individuals and families, we are so sorry this young man's life has been cut short and sad that his family are suffering his loss.We need to get better at reaching people with the right information and support. Over the years we have heard of many people dismissing their food allergy saying it is ‘not that bad'. People with a mild - moderate food allergy can suddenly have a severe allergic reaction to that food. Mild or moderate signs and symptoms that happen within an hour or two of eating need to be investigated and properly diagnosed. Many with a mild or moderate food allergy will not progress to a severe allergy/anaphylaxis BUT SOME WILL. It is unpredictable as to who with a mild or moderate allergy might one day have anaphylaxis. If your doctor considers it a true food allergy, an EpiPen won’t necessarily be prescribed but education on avoidance and advice on what to do in an emergency can be communicated. An ASCIA Action Plan for Allergic Reactions can be given to the individual so they understand what to look out for and what to do in an emergency. We do not want to alarm people but people diagnosed with a food allergy that is mild or moderate need to be aware, avoid the food and know what to do if they develop signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction. Please do not hesitate to call one of our health educators if you have any questions about seeing a doctor about your/your child’s symptoms and for advice on management and emergency treatment. 22.01.2022 There have been two recent cases of measles in WA, with potential exposure in Noranda and Cloverdale. Check out the article for more details if you or a loved one is unvaccinated and has been in these areas for further info. https://www.communitynews.com.au//two-more-measles-cases-/

22.01.2022 This parent recently took her daughter for a controlled tree nut challenge with her allergist. She describes what happened and how her daughter's allergic reaction progressed. A very good read to reinforce some key points: 1. Anaphylaxis can present differently for each person, and differently for the same person - it won't always look the same 2. Know your life threatening signs and symptoms and take them seriously (ie- coughing) Children can look absolutely fine and then deteriorate very quickly 3. Don't delay giving the epipen. If in doubt then give it. Give expired pens if it's all you have. Epipens save lives 4. Always call the ambulance for anaphylaxis. Even if the Epipen works. Anaphylaxis can come back after an Epipen has been given

20.01.2022 You've got my back, I've got yours! We all know that first aid skills may be needed any place, any time, but you never expect CPR to be needed within your own home - let alone twice. It was so fortunate that this couple kept up to date with their CPR skills that literally saved each others lives! https://www.abc.net.au//husband-wife-save-each-o/10496664

18.01.2022 Such an honour to train coaches for the Hawaiian Ride For Youth! These guys train their riders before accompanying them on this ride, over 700kms long, to raise funds for youth suicide intervention. Many thanks for all of the effort put into the first aid training - these riders will be in excellent hands!

17.01.2022 Great news for animal lovers and a good reason to stop feeling guilty about those pet hairs on the sofa.

16.01.2022 This video has been designed for parents of infants and young children, who are at high risk for choking. The video offers valuable information particularly for parents of infants from 4-8 months who are starting solids as it goes through tips and guidelines for recognising and managing when a baby is choking, as opposed to gagging. This video is also very useful for parents who are wanting to prepare themselves for this exciting time, or parents with older children who are wishing to refresh their management for choking in general.

14.01.2022 Here is some sobering advice about the dangers of young children sleeping in car seats, especially when taken out of the car.

13.01.2022 This is a really interesting article and worth taking into consideration. Apparently there is some evidence to suggest that ibuprofen may make us vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. So you may be better off taking paracetamol (panadol) if you need an anti-inflammatory or pain relief. Here is the original article (https://www.thelancet.com//PIIS2213-260have now looked up the original paper here 0(20)30116/fulltext) which suggests a plausible hypothesis by which taking ibuprofen unregulates the ACE2 receptor, which is a binding site for the COVID-19 viral particle.

13.01.2022 This is a great resource put together by GPs for schools to teach children and their teachers and parents how to stop the spread of Covid-19. It really helps to give a good understanding of the virus without causing panic. I think we all could do with that! Thank you GPs! https://www.gps-can.com.au/covid19-basics/a-guide-school

11.01.2022 Such a tragic story but I felt an article worth sharing. Red Nose Day TICK recommendations for safe baby wearing are included. https://www.perthnow.com.au//parents-warned-as-nsw-newborn

09.01.2022 This is the X-ray of a grape lodged in a 5 year olds airway, needing surgery to remove it. Luckily the child survived. Grapes and hotdogs are common culprits for choking in children.
