24.01.2022 'Green bans' and 'builders labourers' became household terms for Sydneysiders during the 1970s. A remarkable form of environmental activism was initiated by the... builders labourers employed to construct the office-block skyscrapers, shopping precincts and luxury apartments that were rapidly encroaching upon green spaces or replacing older-style commercial and residential buildings in Sydney. The builders labourers refused to work on projects that were environmentally or socially undesirable. This green bans movement, as it became known, was the first of its type in the world. https://dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/green_bans_movement The Rocks Sydney 23 October 1973

24.01.2022 Masked up and keeping their distance on the streets of Sydney. Just over a century ago the world was gripped by an influenza pandemic, then known as the ‘Span...ish Flu’. Highly contagious and virulent, the only way to limit the spread of the virus was through quarantine, isolation, good personal hygiene and suspending all public gatherings. In 2020, the same measures have been put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19. Join Senior Curator Elise Edmonds today at 1 pm for a fascinating online talk about the history of pandemics in NSW. Free, register here: https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/events/curators-choice-pandemic You can also see a collection of photographs, letters and ephemera from 1918-19 in our new PANDEMIC! display.

22.01.2022 When we announced our closure on 22 March, it felt as though we were in uncharted waters. For the first time in memory, the Library was closing its doors to the... public and staff indefinitely. However, it wasn’t the first time in history that the Library was forced to shut down due to a pandemic. For Curator Elise Edmonds, the Library’s response to the pandemic contains echoes of the 1918-19 influenza outbreak. "The disease arrived in Sydney on 25 January 1919 via a soldier travelling by train from Melbourne, writes Elise. It spread first to the medical staff treating him, and then into the community. Within three days, the state government had announced the closure of schools, pubs, theatres, churches, libraries and other public places. People were urged to wear face masks, wash their hands frequently, stay in isolation and not panic. Discover the history of flu pandemics in Australia then and now with Elise's latest story. Read it online here: https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/stories/unprecedented 'Two different men, one wearing the compulsory mask, brought in to combat the epidemic of flu in 1919’, by Sam Hood.

22.01.2022 From daguerreotypes to glass plates, stereographs to ambrotypes some of Australia’s oldest images can be found in our collection. Curator Margot Riley recentl...y shared a selection of the Library's earliest photographs with Guardian Australia, including this hand-coloured portrait that is more than 160 years old! It is thought to have been made by photographer Thomas Glaister who set up his American Australian Portrait Gallery in Sydney in April 1855. 22.01.2022 Do you know the name of the man whose face is on our $20 note? Born on this day in 1880, it is Reverend John Flynn, the founder of what would eventually become... the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. In its inaugural year, the Aerial Medical Service (which changed its name to the Royal Flying Doctor Service in 1955) flew 50 flights to 26 destinations and treated 225 patients. Today, their national fleet is 77 planes strong, and is growing each year. 'Flying Doctor Service, Broken Hill, 17 October 1941', photographed for Pix Magazine. 21.01.2022 In September 1889 the ‘intrepid lady explorer’ Ellis Rowan joined her friend and fellow painter Margaret Forrest on a journey up the West Australian coast. From... Perth, the women travelled 400 kilometres to Geraldton and then onwards to Carnarvon, where in springtime more than 12,000 different species of wildflowers bloom. Ellis produced some magnificent watercolours during the trip, and on their return she and Margaret exhibited their work in what is believed to be the first-ever art exhibition held in Western Australia. Hundreds of people flocked to the Railway Station Reading Room in Perth to see the show, gazing in awe and delight at the flowers of their region, many of which they were seeing for the first time. Discover Ellis Rowan’s luscious artworks and compelling adventures in our new book, ‘Ellis Rowan: A Life in Pictures’, available now from our online bookshop: https://bit.ly/39GZwHQ #NLAPublishing #NLAatHome

18.01.2022 Two pandemics, one century apart. In 1918 the world was gripped by an influenza that raged through military camps, eventually making its way to Sydney on 25 Ja...nuary 1919. As the coronavirus continues to impact our lives today, we’re looking back through history to find stories of sacrifice and service, of loss and compassion. Our new display, PANDEMIC! opens this Saturday 5 September, at 10am. More info: https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/exhibitions/pandemic
