22.01.2022 The Magpies have been embracing their roles as police officers and investigators this week. Their play has been full of exploring How and Why police might like to talk to someone (at the station) and gathering the FACTS. The office police sign people in, youll see some get into jail more often than others, and give directions to the next police location. As children play these roles we encourage them to think about how Police Help in community and that they always work safely. They are especially fond of the donated hats. There are even Police puppies who hide their bones and give clues for others to find them. Great engagement, negotiation and perspective taking.
22.01.2022 The Magpie children are really excited and proud of their finished Nature Kindy books! They shared their amazing work with their friends today at group time and cant wait to take them home to share with their family tonight. Maybe its their turn to read the bedtime story to mum or dad or sisters or brothers or grandpa or grandma .......?

20.01.2022 Its going to be super cold this week, but we have a lovely new light table to play with. And it changes. Like the weather..... from hot to cold....
20.01.2022 Hey Playgroup Families! We’re sad to say that we can’t run our last week of playgroup. We wish you all a very safe, healthy and happy Christmas and can’t wait to see you in the new year. Keep an eye on this page for updates, or message us here and we can contact you directly. Xx Cheryl and Maddy.
20.01.2022 We had two amazingly interesting birds at kindergarten today! We dont often see them in our environment but we feel so lucky when we do! One was a tawny frogmouth who is usually nocturnal but very well camouflaged. The other was Edward the emu who was busily counting and caring for his four eggs! We love hills living
19.01.2022 Welcome new Magpies and Rosellas to your first kindy visit. We can’t wait to see you (and neither can the puppies)
19.01.2022 Today we demonstrated our planning, designing, problem solving and creative making skills as we bravely attempted " THE BOAT MAKING CHALLENGE" at Nature Kindy in Belair National Park. CAN YOU MAKE A BOAT USING PIECES OF NATURE? (theres no sticky tape but you can use string and rubber bands to connect things) We are also fabulous risk takers and explorers of the world. It was so much fun when we launched our boats for their maiden voyages in the creek! Do you know that we dont need to measure "how long the creek is" but we do need to measure "how deep" it is before we go in to keep safe. If your socks still get wet it doesnt matter because we can change them after we have finished sailing. Dont let go of your mooring rope or the water will woosh your boat down the creek and out to the sea!
18.01.2022 We are getting ready to go to the theatre with the kindy groups. We did a plan with the Rosellas to help them prepare and to reduce any anxiety. Its also models planning and early story mapping used later for story-writing. LM was telling us about it later. Its pretty spot on. This is my map. We are at kindy and we have all got our bags and we got our fruit in there. And we get on the bus. This is the kindy. Theres watermelon. All of us got watermelon coz I have watermel...on. So these are the grownups and thats Rebekah and Maddy. And theres Deb. And Leanne is there. We are following the grown ups and this is bus. Driving us to Noarlunga. We eat our fruit and if we need to go to the toilet just you have to go. Its just there. This is the kindy. We drive to the theatre. My mum is coming with us. This is the arrow pointing to the bus. See more
18.01.2022 We love our family playgroup. Great reason to bring all the family!
17.01.2022 Playgroup on Saturdays. Our last one for the term is tomorrow (in the rain ). But we have lovely inside experiences to explore. 9-10:30am.
17.01.2022 It was a busy day in the family home today. Aunty came for a visit and fed baby Nicholas before reading him a bedtime story, baby Sarah dribbled her food and biggest baby just dropped her food all down her front! Later that day the parents met in the "lounge room by the fire." The babies had "tummy time on the blue rugs (but little baby Ruby didnt want to because it makes her cry)" Rubys dad just picked her up to cuddle her. We were excited to hear that one mum is already having another baby! Dramatic role play helps children to make sense of our world.
17.01.2022 Let your fingers do the maths. Fingers at work this week- getting stronger, more flexible and coordinated. Great for counting the levels on the buildings youve made yourself, so you can work out which is tallest and shortest. Great for taking cooool camera shorts and for helping fix the artwork dryer. So much happens in our place.
17.01.2022 We made Spinach and Cheese Scrolls today! We harvested, we cut, we chopped, we stirred, we mixed, we rolled, we cooked, we shared and we tasted and we ate.....yummy! Did you know when you measure one cup of flour you need to fill it right to the very top! We are amazing gardeners and chefs!
16.01.2022 Edwina has arrived and Edward is thrilled! These emus were made by both Magpie and Rosella children after we read "Edward the Emu" and "Edwina the Emu" by Sheena Knowles. We also read "Wheres Stripey" by Wendy Binks in order to encourage emu family play. The children are inventing and extending their own stories in their play and the emus are loving their adventures at Blackwood Kindergarten! Fabulous literacy, expressive language and collaborative dramatic play!
15.01.2022 Mark Le Messurier is great.
15.01.2022 The weekend is coming. A lovely time to try this if youve not already.
15.01.2022 What do you do when the kindy kids are ready for school? When they beat all the challenges and are asking for more? You ask them to invent the climbing and then to draw it and test it. And you tell they are ready to manage themselves-right up to goodbye time. Well done magpies. Your organization this week has been terrific.
14.01.2022 This week our children have been exploring the new light table. This encourages children to think about the size, shape, colour and orientation of their design. Some children made a maze. For others it was a castle or a swimming pool. At group we worked together to share a design. There were only 2 rules: Each child had a block, which must touch another block exactly, and a cube which had to be placed so it illuminated. This was more tricky, and we will work on this further as it encourages patience, cooperation, planning and esthetic appreciation.
14.01.2022 Edward the Emu update. Edward's eyes are now glowing because his friend Edwina is on her way! We do need to remind him not to eat all of the vegetables in our garden though!
14.01.2022 Today our Rosellas made their own scoring game. It’s started small and grew and grew. They knew that the start line made it fair for all, they knew they had to wait in a line for a turn so it was safe to throw. They thought arrows would help. They knew they could try again if they didn’t score. They worked out which order the numbers had to go and fixed any mistakes by themselves. Then they played and played. Experiences like these which come from children’s ideas and are extended with thoughtful opportunities for literacy and numeracy help children own their learning and stay motivated, become confident and capable with new skills which might be just beyond their reach to begin with, and which teach resilience and perseverance when it’s hard. Great team work rosellas.
14.01.2022 It's Nature Kindy every day at Blackwood Kindy! Today we measured our broad beans and they were 90cm tall! (I wonder how tall your bean plant at home is getting?)We also noticed tiny baby beans growing from the white flowers! We popped our pea pods and ate them in our vegie garden. We examined different bugs and drew them. We planted rainbow petunias. We stomped in puddles. We found an indigenous butterfly that has finished it's lifetime so we said 'goodbye' and buried it. We examined snails and talked about how to make them comfortable and not 'too dry.' What a happy day of learning and playing outside

12.01.2022 Great family outings enjoy
11.01.2022 What a great message. Leave it a little cleaner than you found it. Its so simple. And yes, its not just the 3 year olds that wander slowly.
10.01.2022 One of the most satisfying things about being an educator in preschool is when you see all children engaged, collaborating, persisting, negotiating, sharing and motivated in their learning across the kindergarten. It takes time, skill and effort to achieve this level of focus and social interaction! Here are some awesome examples from this week! Our children are so ready for the next step in their learning journey!
10.01.2022 It was the Rosella groups turn to share their amazing Nature Kindy books with their friends today. We hope you also take some time to enjoy the story your child has to tell about their unique Nature Kindy adventure. Well done team Rosellas!
09.01.2022 When educators frequently promote mathematical language in play it encourages mathematical exploration, collaborative mathematical conversations and comparisons, problem solving, critical thinking and understanding. The boat was moved to the sandpit today and the sailing friends made a sea! "What are you measuring?" "Its the sea! We need to find out how deep it is! This is the deep end and this is the shallow end!" "How do you know that?"... "Just look at my boots when I go in the water!" "Or we can use this measuring stick!" See more
09.01.2022 Edward the Emu update. Edwards eyes are now glowing because his friend Edwina is on her way! We do need to remind him not to eat all of the vegetables in our garden though!
08.01.2022 Yes!!! Build a collection of questions or statements that build their curiosity and offer them tools to find out more.
08.01.2022 We had another fabulous day at Belair National Park today and the wildlife seemed more active because Spring has arrived. The Rosella group enjoyed watching this Eastern Long Necked Turtle have a wander in the sunshine and the Magpie group were thrilled by a family of ducks and ducklings. Even the emus were strolling around at a distance! Thank you to the children, parents, grandparents, carers and staff for making 2020 Nature Kindy happen in such a awesome way. We lead the way with determination and resilience even in these trying covid times!
05.01.2022 Saturday Playgroup is on this Saturday. We are all set for some watery, sunny play tomorrow. (Our rosellas group have gathered the baby washing things for you). See you here.
05.01.2022 An amazing designer and mechanic built this car for us today! (Numeracy:Spatial awareness and problem solving) We put the pusher in the boot and took the baby to the zoo.(collaborative dramatic play) Dad stayed home in the office to work. He said "Darlings be quiet I'm on the phone". Then he was cross because "the internet crashed and the power went out." ( inventing a story) Mum checked the letter box and found a letter. It was from grandma. She wanted us to do some shoppi...ng for her.(understanding the function of print) Then Grandpa arrived. He had been fishing and caught a puffer fish for us. We told him to take it away because you can't eat them!!! (Humour, fun, imagination and great vocabulary) Later we watered our new plants because there's been no rain.(caring for our environment) We harvested broccoli seeds for next years planting.(sustainable practises) We experimented with daisy chains ( a fine motor challenge)and daisy prints.(art and creativity) We mixed pastel colours (science) and made more patterns (numeracy, art)....what a lovely sunny learning day! 04.01.2022 Today our story table invited children to narrate and perform "Wombat Stew" by Marcia Vaughan. Children collaborated together in order to read the book, move the characters and invent a script. They recalled the story by examining the pictures and this is a very important and valid skill to develop when navigating the path to becoming an excellent reader. *Story table experiences encourage the development of booksense, comprehension, memory, sequencing, listening skills, story telling, vocabulary and oral language. Great work today Magpie Group!
03.01.2022 This is wonderful. Scroll down to the video part. No only does he explain it well, but he gives credit to the person who showed him.
