17.01.2022 Please help us find this plant! CSIRO, South West Catchments Council (SWCC) and several community groups are looking to map the full distribution of narrow... leaf cotton bush (Gomphocarpus fruticosus) across Western Australia. This is part of a new research program to develop better control methods. As we all know, online plant databases (e.g. ALA) rarely capture the real distribution of our weeds. Can you help us fill in the gaps on the cotton bush map in WA? All you need is your smart phone, the free DPIRD MyPestGuide Reporter app and some free time as you #wanderoutyonder around the state. We are interested in knowing about any plants you can find. Please read here for further details, including an easy PDF 'how to' guide for download: https://ecosystemchangeecology.org/cottonbush2021/ Thanking you all in advance for your help with this! 15.01.2022 STOWAWAY CANE TOAD This morning we received a report of a cane toad that had stowed away in luggage on a passenger flight from Queensland to Perth. The male... toad was was discovered in a shoe when the suitcase was opened in a Perth hotel. The cane toad (pictured) was collected by Parks and Wildlife Service officers this morning, and a search of the hotel room and surrounds has confirmed there are no other toads. Cane toads are great stowaways and can easily be transported in your goods and luggage. If you've visited an area where cane toads are present, particularly if you are travelling to an area without cane toads, check your luggage, vehicles and gear for toads. If you see a cane toad somewhere unexpected in WA, please take a clear photo and send to our Cane Toad hotline on 0400 693 807. Don’t kill it as native frogs can be mistaken for toads. 09.01.2022 Montpellier broom may look attractive at the moment but this is a highly invasive weed. A Task Force leader in a national weed eradication programme (defunded a...nd disbanded, alas) said that the Manjimup area had the worst infestation in the country. Where it is growing indicates how this long lived seed spreads - along road verges and in plantations. Pull up seedlings or cut and paint trunks with a woody weed killer. See more
