19.01.2022 Another marvel of Blackwood. Did you know Blackwood's magnificent Monterey Pine is the largest specimen in the Southern Hemisphere. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata) located in Blackwood, Vic is recognised as a significant tree in Victoria.... Age: 131 years old (approx). Diameter: 3 metres. Height: 50 metres +. Location: Blackwood Recreation Reserve, Vic 3458. The Monterey Pine at the Blackwood Recreation Reserve is an enormous tree. There is some uncertainty as to when and by whom the tree was planted as the area was originally a billabong and later a Chinese market garden. Mr Roy Terrill, whose family own the adjacent farm, remembers his father, Mr Ernest Terrill and his uncles talking about levelling and preparing the ground. He estimated that was the 1890S. The perimeter was then planted with various conifers, five or six of which still remain, including this pine. www.trusttrees.org.au//Blackwood_Recreation_Reserve_Recrea

07.01.2022 Historic Log Cabins of Blackwood. Many local residents and visitors to the town over the years have loved the rustic log cabins around Blackwood. From the early gold mining days of the 1860s onward there have been many log cabins throughout the town and we are fortunate that a few still remain to offer an insight to how the early pioneers lived in these small primitive dwellings.... Margot Hitchcocks own uncle built a log cabin in the main street of Blackwood, using logs with the gaps between filled with cement and mud. It was used as a holiday cabin for the family with built in bunk beds down one end. Unfortunately the cabin accidently burnt down in the 1980’s.
