13.01.2022 Ok fam We’ve been laying low on here busy workin’ behind the scenes - can you believe we are already up to week 9 of our program FNWMV Let’s take it back & let you in on some of our journey thus far! Week 1 of the program was all about the INTRODUCTION: ... We had a grounding Welcome to Country by Aunty Di Kerr & were joined by the incredible Monica Weightman as our 1st Guest Artist for the program! ‘Monica Weightman is a musician and Murri woman. She grew up in Townsville, influenced by her Islander father Roy and with the musical genes of her Scottish-English-Italian mother. Although she never really associated with the large Torres Strait Islander community in Townsville, she said she had more recently been seeking out more of the heritage that so clearly shaped her songs. Weightman came to Melbourne in her 20s and studied jazz for a while before joining an all-girl trio. Monica Weightman walked away from beckoning fame and fortune, along the way writing songs with inmates from the Deer Park women’s prison. ‘It’s a journey of love: I don’t think you essentially get into it for the money,’ she said. When Weightman released her second CD, Lost Generation, she said it was equally important to give back to and learn from younger musicians and the disadvantaged members of the community. To know where you are from gives you a sense of pride and purpose, a sense of place in the world, I understand that now.’ It was an absolute privilege having Aunty Di Kerr Welcome us to Country & Monica kick off the program imparting such needed wisdom, inspiration & song to us womxn! Thank You! https://youtu.be/1Q5GkV-E3ow https://youtu.be/Q0izgjIIODc

Now based in Melbourne, these soul sisters are set to trail-blaze their innovative style of Indigenous music. With three singles under their belt (We Sing Until Sunrise, Before Daylight and their latest release ‘I Feel It’), their hotly anticipated debut album We Sing Until Sunrise (Ngangk Ngoorndiny Ngala Warangka - strongly reflects that we are forever singing, forever dancing and forever celebrating our culture). This is the essence of who The Merindas are and the ethos they bring to each of their performances. The Merindas formed in 2012 singing Motown hits for the premier of The Sapphires Movie. What was supposed to be a one off show became a full-time career performing around 400 shows in the last eight years. Garnering rave reviews on the live circuit, playing festivals and major corporate events across Australia, The Merindas present a world-class, fresh and energetic show. They have supported some of Australia’s biggest stars including International Grammy Award winning artist Brandy and UK artist Craig David. Keeping culture alive and strong through language and song, The Merindas long awaited album was released in June 2020. During their performance, audiences can expect choreographed dance moves, soaring vocals and visual projections that weave into the fabric of their music and stories. They are backed by the mastery of DJ Jake Steele and joined by ‘Wala Connections ’- the fierce dance duo of Thara Brown and Natarsha Bamblett.
