11.01.2022 The Chard building Darlinghurst. Built after the widening of William Street in 1915. It opened in 1925 and was soon occupied by Phil 'the Jew' Jeff's 50:50 club. This was the home of illicit grog, gambling and cocaine. Queen of the Bordello, Tilly Devine, installed her top girls on an upper floor. Patrons entered from the rear lane (entrance now bricked up). The main floor was scattered with card tables and chairs where patrons could be served illicit booze whilst gambling. ...Patrons were Sydney's upper classes, judiciary and police. Each table had a bowl of cocaine in the centre. Patrons paid for booze, food, drugs, going to the toilet and visiting the brothel on the upper floor. Plus a 5 pound exit fee. Great business model. Jeff's died in 1945 of an infected bullet wound received during the Battle of Kellett Street in 1929 during the Razor Gang Wars. Bad luck. By the late 1940s the Queens of the Underworld, Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh, were being replaced by the rising Godfather of Sydney, Abe Saffron.
