20.01.2022 ENDANGERED FROG REVIVAL DESPITE DROUGHT Controversial environmental water flows are believed to be the driving force behind the revival of an endangered native ...frog despite the drought. But researchers say numbers are recovering as a result of strategic pumping of environmental water flows and help from landholders in the mid-Murrumbidgee area of southern NSW. Associate Professor Skye Wassens from Charles Sturt University is leading the Murrumbidgee Long Term Intervention Monitoring Project, which is monitoring the impact environmental watering events have. Dr Wassens says they are recording large numbers of Southern Bell Frogs across a more widespread variety of wetlands. "Its probably one of the most successful frog recovery programs that weve seen in Australia," she said. "It sort of flies under the radar a little bit." : Damian Michael

19.01.2022 BEAUTIFUL BIRDS OF LAKE CARGELLIGO When the Van Dyk family started photographing the birds around their waterside home, it was just a hobby. Soon their pa...ssion grew into a social media campaign to capture all 220-plus species around the Lake Cargelligo region. Their newfound knowledge and interest in the birds has galvanised them to begin conservation efforts to protect vital habitat and educate locals on how to nurture some of the areas vulnerable species. This week marks National Bird Week, encouraging Australians to take part in the #AussieBirdCount, which helps environmental groups fill in any knowledge gaps for bird activity in urban and regional areas. 15.01.2022 $1.2 MILLION FOR LAKE COWAL After fighting hard for over 2 years, and with several setbacks along the way, I could hardly contain my excitement as I trave...lled to Lake Cowal to announce a very special funding grant of $1.2 million. The funding will go toward delivering the Inhabitat Lake Cowal Project as part of the NSW Government Regional Growth program. The Lake Cowal Conservation Centre (LCCC) (LCCC) is a huge asset to the Cootamundra Electorate and especially the Lachlan Catchment. The Centre, under the leadership of Mal Carnegie, does amazing work in engaging and educating the community in so many important issues from catchment management through to improved land management practices. They are helping to ensure the region is self-sustaining beyond the life of the Evolution Cowal Gold Mine, and providing invaluable natural resource management education for our children. With visitor numbers more than doubling in the past 5 years to over 9,000, this infrastructure and program funding will be a huge boost to the economic growth of the region including more tourists, spending with local businesses and more local jobs. Located to the north east of West Wyalong, Lake Cowal visitors include school students, travelling families, land managers and farmers who participate in education programs run by the Lake Cowal Conservation Centre. The Project has also received a significant contribution of more than $500,000 from the Bland Shire Council together with the Lake Cowal Conservation Centre. Im so proud that the NSW Government is helping to fund such an important project, not only for the Bland Shire, but for the future of natural resource management research and education. Well done to the whole team at LCCC for never giving up - we got there in the end! I cant wait to come back throughout 2020 and see how the project unfolds. MERRY CHRISTMAS . Sx
