She is passionate about Indigenous and Queer representation and has represented and uplifted her community both through her career in Indigenous education, employment and inclusion, as well as advocacy work through her podcast 'Coming Out, Blak' Coming Out, Blak , public speaking and media work. . . Most recently, Matika has taken on the role of First Nations & Engagement Officer at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. . . What does BlaQ mean to you? . . BlaQ represents such an important cross section of our community and it makes me proud to see a successful, Queer, Aboriginal owned and led organisation working with and for our mob. . . 02.01.2022 BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation (BlaQ) was established as a collective response to strengthening the visibility of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQ+ community. BlaQ aims to foster pathways that provide informed and authentic representation that positively impacts the social and emotional wellbeing of our people. Through a network of sharing, support and connection BlaQ strives to elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQ+ mob from across the country by c...reating safe and inclusive spaces of belonging and empowerment for our members. BlaQ is recruiting Community Connectors to lead BlaQ’s Community Resilience Program (the Program). The Program and Community Connector positions are funded by Aboriginal Affairs NSW as part of their COVID-19 Aboriginal Community Partnership initiative. The aim of the Program is to alleviate the impacts of COVID-19 by: 1) Supporting activities that limit the movement of Aboriginal people outside their homes and ensure this movement is COVID safe, to minimise the risk of transmission; 2) Support the provision of trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, local community based social and emotional wellbeing support for Aboriginal people impacted by COVID-19; 3) Support Aboriginal people’s access to accurate and timely information regarding COVID-19 and its impacts; and 4) Provide culturally appropriate services to our members to support their health and wellbeing. The Community Connector will support, design and facilitate community engagement activities, and develop appropriate strategies to support BlaQ members and our wider community. this role is a 6-month contract. 01.01.2022 MEET THE MOB!! . . Shane is a proud Gay Aboriginal man with family originating from Gundungurra Land. Raised in Queanbeyan and lived most of his adult life in Newcastle and Sydney. .... . Shane is seen as a specialist in Corporate and Social responsibility with a strong social justice belief. Commencing his career in Banking and Finance, Shane realised that this did not meet his personal value set and enrolled in university. Now a qualified Counsellor with tertiary education in Community Services Management, Indigenous Leadership and Community Advocacy Shane’s career spans across a number of social services, including, health, financial counselling, disabilities, homelessness and education. . . Married at an early age, Shane knows firsthand the feeling of not living in your own skin and welcomes the innovation that is BlaQ and all that it will bring to the Aboriginal LGBTIQ+ community. . . What does BlaQ mean to you? . . Growing up in a loving and supportive family environment, I want to deliver this same level of care and nurturing to all communities, who may not have the same positive opportunities that I was provided as a young man.
