22.01.2022 Hello BlazeAiders, As the BlazeAid bases in SA close it is time to recommence regular gatherings to keep people in touch before the next disaster requires our attention. Catch up with your new and old BlazeAid friends.... There will be an informal Gathering: On Sunday, 29th November from 11am onwards. In Bonython Park, just east of the car park opposite the CocaCola factory on Port Road, Thebarton. It's near stop 2 bus stop and the Thebarton tram stop. Bring your lunch, drinks and camp chairs. Plenty of shade. There are electric BBQs right there and it's a short walk to toilets. We previously met at the Arkaba hotel and we will do that again when Covid restrictions are lifted allowing a viable lunch gathering at the hotel. Please reply to [email protected] to let us know you are coming. Phone Ann Stevens on 0429 349 980 for more information. Cheers, Ann & Greg Stevens

20.01.2022 Stephen Winyard from Scotland sent Blazeaid KI a wee dram. Och aye the noo Stephen. Remembered very fondly.

20.01.2022 Today we said a very sad hooray to one of BlazeAid’s finest. Barry Clapp has been with BlazeAid KI since January, he has made a few trips home in that time but came back to lend a hand again and again. Barry is one of the best ambassadors for BA you will find and I know many other BA volunteers will have worked with him. He made friends with everyone in camp, from 18 to 70 and he will be missed dearly. Bye for now Barry, til next time we meet, safe travels.

19.01.2022 SA Bash came to Parndana Oval today. What a great bunch of people. The cars were great entertainment for the camp.

18.01.2022 A special thanks to Stan Gorton for filming our last fence on Kangaroo Island.

18.01.2022 One of the tractors going out to drive posts.

18.01.2022 Hi all. I just received this message from the daughter of one of my most favourite people in the whole wild world I met on KI during my Blaze Aid stint.. Scottish Steve has the best story ever. Basically at 70 years old packed his bags on a whim in Scotland, flew 1st class to Sydney, hired a car and set off on what he thought would be a 3hr drive to KI that took 3 days. He declared actually picked up a hammer for the first time in his life on KI while volunteering to re ...build fences destroyed in the fires "Hello! Message from our Dad, Stephen Winyard proudly flying your national flag on Anzac Day" He said he had a castle. Looks like he doesn't talk crap. Best bloke ever. Chris Lemar

17.01.2022 BlazeAid Kangaroo Island has new co-ordinators, Jules and Jo. We’d like to invite anyone who is interested in a challenge and would like to help the farmers on the island. After 9 months BlazeAid are so close to completing the farms devastated by the fires in January this year. We need more volunteers to complete the job. We are situated at the Parndana Sports and Showground. We have limited accommodation to offer but we do have plenty of room if you bring your own, including... power if you need it. The crew here at the moment are wonderful ambassadors for BlazeAid but several of them need to leave soon, we’d love to grow our numbers again. Half the cost on the ferry to and from the island will be reimbursed if you work a minimum of 5 days. If you or someone you know is able to help please call Jo on 0417 614446. Enjoy today’s rainbow, a positive sign for the way forward.

16.01.2022 WE NEED YOU ! If you are thinking of volunteering at BlazeAid Kangaroo Island you need to do it NOW. The camp will be closing in a few weeks and will not reopen, so if you would like to help give us a call. We have very limited accommodation, it is best that you bring your own. Bring some friends too.... If you are prepared to work a minimum of 5 days helping the farmers on the island we will reimburse 50% of your return ferry trip. Please ensure you call the camp before booking the ferry to ensure we have a spot for you. Jules and Jo 0417 614 446.

11.01.2022 BlazeAid Parndana will not be accepting any new volunteers to the camp due to concerns regarding COVID 19 cases in Adelaide. Jules and Jo.

05.01.2022 This week saw two major milestones achieved at BlazeAid Kangaroo Island. The camp clocked up 300 days and our most dedicated volunteer surpassed 100 kms of fencing by him and the teams he worked with. Together with his many teammates he has also cleared 91.2 Km, put in 4737 posts and built 239 boxes. Steve Hewitt travelled to the island on 4 January this year when the fire was still raging. Steve’s role then was to gain information regarding the assistance needed by the farm...ers and to spread awareness of the BlazeAid group through the community. Shortly after that the camp was established and what followed was logistically the largest BlazeAid effort in Australia. Of the 788 volunteers on the list who gave their time, energy and support to the farmers of Kangaroo Island, Steve’s name is at number 1, deservedly so. Steve has been on the fence line every day when he was in camp, over 260 days, and in his spare time he has been toolman. That in itself is a significant achievement. We would like to personally thank Steve for his dedication and support and also recognise the support of his wife, Colleen, in making it possible for one man with a big heart to make a massive difference. We always say in BlazeAid that we hope we don’t meet you at another camp as we all hope there are no more fires, but if you ever see Steve with his wry smile walking into your camp you can expect selfless support and a lot of hard yakka. When the camp closes at the end of the month Steve will go home to his family, we hope he has a well earned rest. Kind thoughts and happy times your way mate, Jules and Jo. *Photo is courtesy of The Advertiser*

04.01.2022 We said goodbye to Co-ordinators Graham and Maxine last night. They have been with BlazeAid KI for 228 days, 4 months as co-ordinators. Graham and Maxine arrived just as the camp went into lockdown and helped to keep it going during COVID, eventually volunteering to take on the co-ordinators roles. They have met and helped a lot of farmers and volunteers and tell us they’ve made life long friends from around the world. It’s a bitter sweet time, on the one hand they have so much to celebrate and be proud of, on the other hand we are so sad to see them go. Cheers to you both, congratulations on an extremely mighty effort and we all hope you get to relax and enjoy your family time. Till we meet up again...take care.

02.01.2022 We said goodbye to all these lovely people this week. Happy travels to our international visitors, Gaia, Maca, Diana, Lucy, Alice, Orla and Joel, and see you at the next SA camp to Kaila (& Alicia). A big thanks to you all for all your hard work.
