12.01.2022 Cognitive Biases Influence Decision-Making humans often make less than optional decisions from a rational viewpoint. Cognitive bias is closely connected with human decision-making because people learn and develop predictable thinking patterns. While patterns are sometimes positive and reflect rational decision-making behavior, other patterns lead to poor or sub-optimal choices. Although an individual can learn to overcome some of their biases, and can learn new decision-m...aking approaches or styles, there is an individual difference component that influences how people process and use information. Since people have limitations as information processors, biases can, and often do, reduce the amount of thinking and processing that a person does to make a choice, especially in stressful or time-limited situations. The way that information is presented and the way that analyses are conducted also impact the amount of cognitive resources and information gathering that a person requires in a situation. Emotions are functionally adaptive states consisting of coordinated sets of physiological, cognitive, and behavioral changes. These changes occur in response to fitness-relevant stimuli to facilitate decision making and resource allocation. Cognitive biases can affect our decision-making skills, limit our problem-solving abilities, hamper our career success, damage the reliability of our memories, challenge our ability to respond in crisis situations, increase anxiety and depression, and impair our relationships. Cognitive biases are flaws in our thinking that can lead us to draw inaccurate conclusions. They can be harmful because they cause us to focus too much on some kinds of information while overlooking other kinds. It’s probably unrealistic to think that we can eliminate cognitive biases, but we can improve our ability to spot the situations where we’ll be vulnerable to them. By learning more about how they work, slowing our decision-making process, collaborating with others, and using objective checklists and processes, we can reduce the chances that cognitive biases will lead us astray.
