24.01.2022 SATELLITE | the place one lives., 1 August - 30 October 2020 For the place one lives., four artists were invited to submit work relating to notions of home. The resulting works by Miko Revereza, Leyla Stevens, Talia Smith and Amrita Hepi consider what constitutes home through different guises - meditating on the malleability of home through gesture, image, memory, the body, story and site. That which constitutes home can adapt and evolve over time. What remains constant for c...reative practitioners is that art has the ability to act as a home a place one can always return. Curated by Josephine Mead Accompanying text by Anabelle Lacroix Head to our website to watch each of these moving image works in full > https://www.blindside.org.au/play Image stills from Amrita Hepi, Precedent piece video, 0:57min. This work was commissioned by Kaldor Public Art Projects. Amrita Hepi (b. 1989, Townsville of Bundjulung/Ngapuhi territories) is an artist working with dance and choreography through video, the social function of performance spaces, installation and objects. Utilising hybridity and the extension of choreographic or performative practices, Hepi creates work that considers the body’s relationship to personal histories and the archive. #BlindsideARI #Satellite

21.01.2022 SONIC.LAND LISTEN ONLINE NOW SONIC.LAND shares new artwork by Rachel Shearer, Clinton Watkins, Edwina Stevens and Reuben Derrick, four artists from Aotearoa New Zealand who work with environmental sound. Curator: Sam Longmore... This is a project which rejects staid models for environmental listening and recording in favour of pluralistic, subjective encounters. Attendance, spontaneity, reflection and deep engagement with the environment are presented and celebrated as ends in themselves, as well as modalities for developing meaning and understanding in relation to the world around us. Through a presentation of sonic artworks and a series of long-from interviews between the artists and curator, sonic.land explores the individual strategies and thought processes of leading NZ sound artists as they relate to environmental recording and associated practices in Aotearoa New Zealand. Link in bio This project was conceived in 2019 and was intended to feature as part of the 2020 exhibition programme at BLINDSIDE, Naarm Melbourne. It has been developed as an online project with support from the Audio Foundation, Tmaki Makaurau Auckland, whose International Presentations programme is generously support by Creative New Zealand. 19.01.2022 CURHAT PAGI / MORNING CONFESSION by Badra Aji 23 September - 10 October Online now! ... Curhat Pagi / Morning Confession took inspiration from a popular television show in Indonesia, where live viewers are allowed to seek guidance from popular Islamic clerics. In turn, they will answer the questions with life advice based on the Quran and Hadith. In his new video work, Indonesian-born artist Badra Aji presented a question about love, intimacy, and a ghost of an ex-lover. Through the interlacing of banal imagery and poetic narrative, Curhat Pagi offers a heartfelt commentary on the changing attitude towards the LGBTQIA+ community in an increasingly conservative country. Indonesian-born artist Badra Aji left his homeland in his teenage years and has lived and worked in Melbourne ever since. Graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2016, he received the Majlis Traveling Scholarship and has exhibited in First Site Gallery, George Paton Gallery, Red Gallery, and TCB Art Inc. He was nominated as a finalist of the Paul Guest Drawing Prize as well as of the prestigious Dobell Drawing Prize in 2019. His work sits between the poetic and absurd and aims to investigate the notion of normalcy in Western culture from an Eastern point of view. Throughout his practice he works with photo-media, text, video, printmaking and drawing. There is no hierarchy in his mediums. Materiality however is chosen for its distinct qualities. 14.01.2022 ONLINE NOW 23 September - 10 October BLINDSIDE has three new moving image projects, now available to view on our website. VALLEY OF LAGUZ... Valley of Laguz is Melbourne based artist Jesse Boyd Reid personal exploration of place. This video work explores a bend in a creek that is held sacred in his family mythology. Whilst under COVID-19 lockdown the artist’s family re-stage historical family experiences exploring ritual, belonging and ceremony. CURHAT PAGI / MORNING CONFESSION Curhat Pagi / Morning Confession took inspiration from a popular television show in Indonesia, where live viewers are allowed to seek guidance from popular Islamic clerics. Through the interlacing of banal imagery and poetic narrative, Curhat Pagi offers a heartfelt commentary on the changing attitude towards the LGBTQIA+ community in an increasingly conservative country. KICKING THE BUCKET Kicking the Bucket by artist Sarah Rudledge is a daily ritual of kicking and repairing a plastic bucket that began in my backyard during the early stages of COVID-19 lockdowns. Initially based on feelings of hopelessness, the work explores tactics for a repeated movement; a heartfelt kick followed by a gentle repair, to sustain some enthusiasm and care for life during this time. By mediating this arguable pointless gesture through text, sound and video an approximate, possibly unreliable, process of archiving the day’s action is attempted. IMAGES 1. 13.01.2022 ISOLATION RESIDENCY: Anna Dunnill Anna is continuing to process an invasive plant called moth vine into fibre (see previous post). While some of the fibres are long and fine, and can be spun together with no further preparation, others are... short and fluffythis is called ‘tow’. The tow is prepared with carding combs, a process that cleans the fibres and aligns them. They are then rolled into fluffy sausages called ‘rolags’ ready for spinning on thewheel. #BlindsideARI #AnnaDunnill

Applications close midnight Tuesday 27 October 2020.... Since 2011, BLINDSIDE’s Summer Studio Residency Program has transformed the gallery space into a studio residency, culminating in a studio exhibition. Supporting the practice of two artists in gallery spaces 1 and 2 (or a duo working across both gallery spaces), the Summer Studio Residency Program provides a unique platform for the examination of practice and work within a combined studio and exhibition context. The residency concludes with a studio exhibition to kick off our 2021 program. This showing may be approached as a presentation of residency findings or works in progress rather than as a fully resolved exhibition. City of Melbourne and BLINDSIDE are delighted to support artists in the development and exhibition of new work.

02.01.2022 ISOLATION RESIDENCY | Anna Dunnill at home 12 - 28 August 2020 Anna has collected this soft hair-like fibre from a weed called moth vine (Araujia sericifera), from around Coburg. ... Moth vine has many names: moth plant, cruel vine, false choko, milkweed, kapok. It strangles trees and swarms over fences, its bulbous seedpods making it instantly recognisable. I’ve discovered that moth vine can be dried, retted (slightly rotted), split and scraped to access long strong fibres within the stems. It’s similar to the way linen fibre is made from flax, but using this weedthis invader no-one wants in their garden; that grows anyway. Packed inside each green pod are hundreds of seeds, each attached to a silky fibre parachute. While this is too short and brittle to make thread, the similar fibres from milkweed seeds (a related family) can be used for quilt batting and to fill life jackets! So many plants have properties we know nothing about. With this project Anna is getting to know some of them. Swipe to see snapshots of the process in reverse; from fibre back to growing plant. 02.01.2022 ISOLATION RESIDENCY: IVEY WAWN 2 - 19 September 2020 'My practice revolves around the work that is necessary for each project that I embark on. It involves reading, speaking with friends and collaborators, moving in ways that are related to some of the ideas that I am concerned with at the time, and reading more, or writing, or drawing blueprints and maps to understand how the ideas are interrelated. It is inherently social, whether that is a sociality enacted between live bo...dies in physical space, or enacted with imagined bodies, or non-human bodies, or memories. It is a dance practice, and whilst sometimes not much dancing happens, it is always there as an intention, and sometimes, to me, that feels like what matters most.'
