05.01.2022 Snakes and Pets This recent hot weather has shown that more snakes are on the move resulting in us seeing an influx of pets bitten. Dogs will often try to chase... or kill snakes resulting in snake bites, usually to the dog's face and legs and cats, being hunters and chasing anything that moves, are also quite susceptible to snake bites. Snakes are not social and will try to hide at any opportunity. In fact they would rather get away from you and your pet rather than bite. So the first step is to eliminate the hiding places. Some tips to try and deter snakes away from your yard is to keep your grass mowed short and clean up rubbish piles (especially sheets of corrugated iron) and keep your wood pile away from the house. If you suspect that your pet has been bitten by a snake it is extremely important that you remain calm and get your pet to the closest vet clinic. If possible get someone to call ahead so they can be ready for your arrival. Below is a picture showing how different brown snakes can look. (Yes they are all brown snakes).
