09.01.2022 This Global Climbing Day, were celebrating leaders pushing for change & engaging the climbing community in a series of conversations about accessibility, inclusivity & the future of climbing. Were excited to use this opportunity to highlight someone whos work we greatly admire Sophie King Sophie started climbing when she was 11 years old, her parents took her to the local climbing gym one rainy afternoon & shes been hooked ever since. Her passion grew to competing at... local & international competitions from the age of 12, then discovered the world of outdoor climbing soon after & has been psyched ever since. She currently juggles her training, nursing career & running womens climbing clinics. We asked Sophie to share a little about her work [content warning: mentions of sexual harassment] I think bouldering can be really intimidating, especially for womxn as it can feel like a boys club sometimes. Growing up in a male dominated sport, I really had to learn to hold my own. As a young female at 13 years old, I was sexualised by an older male climber in his 30s at my local climbing gym. He made comments such as she was asking for it, she wanted my attention. Hearing this at such a young age was so devastating, because all I wanted to do was climb. I created my climbing clinics because I wanted to create a safe space for womxn and people who dont fit that mould. As well as teaching a range of skills from beginner to intermediate I wanted the womxn to feel supported and empowered. I feel like we have come such a long way in our community. There are some gyms and organisations, who are promoting inclusivity among women, people of colour, and the LGBTQIA+. As a result more womxn are climbing now more than ever, however I feel there is still more the community can achieve together. 03.01.2022 Just a reminder about our kids policy! BlocHaus MKV is designed for adults & big kids. Kids 12 years & over are welcome to climb at BlocHaus MKV anytime, with proper adult supervision. Kids under 12 can come in to try it out during the day Monday to Friday, but in the interest of safety for our climbers big & small, these visits need to be strictly wrapped up by 5:30pm. Please take note of this when booking in your boulder, as exceptions cannot be made on arrival.... All kids require adult supervision in haus, in line with our age specific ratios & must follow our haus rules at all times.
