25.01.2022 A year and a day since I started my first market. And I am back in New Zealand with a smile and some things to sell. It has been an incredible year THANK YOU EVERYONE! Looking forward to showing off some recent commissions and get out to more markets this year. See everyone soon.

25.01.2022 Too many things on the go at the moment and my mind is still wandering, thinking about MORE projects. Life is changing for me again very soon but with new challenges comes new enthusiasm. This piece though I have been working on for some time for a good friend. Wax carved double headed eagle and hand fabricated feet. These are the fourth attempt at the feet! Sometimes things just don't end up how you want them, looking awkward and misplaced. I think these look the part. It's not finished yet but I couldn't wait to show the progress so far. 24.01.2022 Another step by step! This time showing how I made a crown. I made this piece all the way back in june but I haven't had time to show it off untill now. I used a process called chasing and repousse for this. I am very new too the technique so this is the third or fourth piece I have made. Repousse is the process of pushing and hammering the metal into shape. The crown is brass with a beautiful blue spinel front and center. ... I love making crowns and it was nice to make something in a different way to what I am used too. Hope you all like the final piece.

22.01.2022 Spent some time in the workshop today filling orders and working on masters for my catalog. I have been quiet of late while I adjust to being a father, it's been incredible so it's difficult to get out to my bench. Once I am there though I realize how much fun it is. One day I hope to show her how to make jewellery (hope she likes it, ha ha) #handmade #metalwork #metalart #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery

22.01.2022 I have only had time for 1 project recently. My niece wanted a crown for her 13th birthday and who was I to say no to such a request. I was given some design requests but otherwise given freedom to design what I wanted. I had to include a crescent moon, so that had to be the center piece. Straight away I wanted to make it something different. I decided to repousse the whole piece, I am still learning this skill but knew that it would make it stand out. ... The piece is brass and set with 4 moon stones. I have included some progress shots of the work. Repousse is such an amazing artform. I hope you all enjoy the crown as much as the birthday girl. Tom. Don't forget I recently started sharing work on Instagram so please check me out if you haven't already. @blood_and_iron_jewellery

21.01.2022 The news of puppeteer Caroll Spinney's passing has hit my house a bit hard today. Sesame street had a huge impact on myself and my wife. Something we will be passing on to our daughter. But we will miss his voice and artistic presence, even if we didn't know his name when we were kids. Oscar the Grouch is my wife's favorite character and I made this necklace for her birthday or a Christmas or something, we can't remember. We'll miss you Caroll. #sesamestreet #oscarthegrouch #bigbird #jewellery #handmade #metalwork #metalart #bloodandironjewellery #waxcarving #silver #scram #slimey

21.01.2022 A pair of personalized fibula brooches I made a while back. I stupidly never took photos when I completed them. So when I had to fix up a couple of pearls I quickly snapped some photos. I am so proud of these pieces. It became something of a passion project to make them truly unique and classic. I made these in wax then cast in bronze. After that they were gold plated to really pop. The stones are sapphires from the customers private collection. ... #handmade #metalwork #metalart #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery #wax #fibula #waxcarving #mysca #medieval #gold #sapphire #pearls

21.01.2022 Starting to get some extra time on the bench. So I am working my way through a very long list of projects. It's always nice when a commission lines up with something at the top of that list. I got a solid start to a fancy demicient belt, also known as an ovary belt. In my research I found a many examples but the piece from this portrait (can't remember the name of the painting now) seemed like a great place to start. Simple yet strikingly beautiful. I wax carved the base and... cast it in bronze. Then moved on to hand fabricate the large 14mm setting, domes, chain hook and.....I guess, spiky bit? I made the mistake of making the first set of domes too thin but the second set were perfect. Once in production I will be setting a 14mm cabochon carnelian in the center. #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery #waxcarving #metalwork #metalart #bronze #handmade #demicient #reenactor #mysca #14thcentury #belt

19.01.2022 A rainy Sunday here in Melbourne so managed a full day in the workshop.

18.01.2022 Less than 24 hours until The Original Reenactors Market opens up in the UK. My friend Dan will be manning the stall so go and say hello and check out the merchandise. Thank you too Dan and for everyone spreading the word. You are all the best! Tom.

18.01.2022 Exciting times ahead!!! Blood and Iron jewellery is heading to the United Kingdom. We will be at the next Original Reenactors Market (T.O.R.M). WHEN? I hear you ask... November 10th, 11th and 12th. WHERE? Good question... Sports Connexion, Leamington Road, Ryton on Dunsmore, CV8 3FL... Website: http://www.reenactorsmarket.co.uk This is a fantastic event open to everyone so spread the word not just for my sake but for all the merchants in attendance. I won't be able to make it but my dear friend Dan will be holding the fort. He is an excellent artist and craftsman himself and will be able show you whats what. Pop around and say hello. He is an absolute legend. And these beautiful sword hanging kits will be available at the event, along with my Hedeby turtle brooches, chains, buckles and rings. Thank you everyone for the love and response I recived for the wedding post last week. That means so much. Tom.

17.01.2022 I have always loved making unusual pieces. Something with a story that can also create conversation. So I absolutely lost my mind to be able to make this crazy long shoe horn! This was made as a 7year wedding anniversary gift. The client's husband loves ducks, so I carved a duck head as the elaborate handle (you can see the green wax master in tge photos). The shoe horn is long enough that you don't have to bend over to put your shoes on..... genius! Cast in copper the duck... head and 7 bands accent the hard wood beautifully. The larger of the bands is engraved with the wedding date and their favorite song. The gift is wonderful and quirky so I tried to reflect that in the piece and give the duck a bit of attitude. Hope everyone has a wonderful, quirky day and this duck puts a smile on your face like it has for me. Thank you. Tom

14.01.2022 Last week was my wife's birthday. I spent ages trying to think of something to get her during all of the shut down. Nothing seemed quite right. But it turns out I forgot I am a jeweller and I could probably just make her something. So I did. The stones are 6mm quartz that my grandfather found while traveling around Australia. He found the raw stone and had the cut many years ago. He past them on to me when I became a jeweller. I saved them for a special occasion, like this.... Everything else is hand made in silver, I even hand made the butterfly clips. #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery #metalwork #metalart #handmade #earrings #silver #birthdaypresent

13.01.2022 Here is a 14th century plaque belt I made mid last year for my friend. Made in bronze with a sterling silver device on the large centerpiece. I made the plaque with a hollow center so I can easily switch out the details for a uniform look with less work. I hand fabricated all of the details in the squares and wax carved everything else. Challenging and great fun, a very rewarding piece. #handmade #metalwork #metalart #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery #wax #waxcarving #mysca #medieval

12.01.2022 There has been a lot of changes behind the scenes of Blood and Iron in recent months. Myself and my Wife welcomed our daughter into the world in March. This is both the most amazing and stressful time of our life as she was born 13 weeks early and weighing 519g. So I have paused my work for a moment so I can concentrate on my family. This hasn't stopped me thinking about the future of Blood and Iron jewellery. I am going to change up a few things and when I come back I will ...be fresh and ready to make some beautiful jewellery. I have started an Instagram profile to start sharing some of the work that goes into the pieces I make. I often share the final product, I want to show you how I get there. Workshop shots, designs, step by step and sneak peeks. You can follow me under the name @blood_and_iron_jewellery Please follow and tell me what you would like to see. Thank you everyone. Tom

11.01.2022 In 2017 while taking a holiday in England I stumbled across an antique store. It was cluttered and eclectic but in the window a small tray caught my eye. After spending so much time pouring over images on the internet and looking through books for interesting pieces to recreate, here in front of me was actual extant pieces. Absolutely unmistakable to me but possibly just brown tarnished lumps to those not really paying attention. Bronze Roman fibula, medieval pewter buckles a...nd all manner of brass belt fittings. I picked up a few bits which I thought were most interesting with the plan to recreate them at a later date. Here is the first of my attempts. A 14th century strap end in brass, still with remnants of the leather strap in the top. The original piece is around 10mm wide and almost 40mm long. The original construction would have been 3 separate parts glued together and riveted to the leather. Mine is constructed in a similar way except the 3 pieces are soldered together to make it easier for mass production. I am so pleased how this turned out. It is, hopefully, as close to how it originally looked when first made 500+ years ago. Delicate and simple but still beautiful. It's not a museum showcase piece, great works won't be written about it but it has history and it is a snapshot of the more common everyday item that are just as important. Hope you like what I have done and it will at some point be available to buy. Hooe everyone is safe and keeping occupied. Tom.

11.01.2022 This fancy demicient belt end has really come along. The pieces are all soldered together but upon reaching the final stages it just wasn't feeling right. Something about it felt overwhelmingly modern. It needed some texture or something but I couldn't put my finger on what. I had even started to take some finished piece photos. After a quick discussion with a good friend he confirmed and suggested what I should do. I didn't want to admit to myself what I had to do. I knew t...hat background texture was the way forward and a cross hatch pattern was best and very common in belt ends. So back to the bench for some more work. Well worth it I think. It feels right now. So close to finishing. Hopefully the next time you see it it will be set and have the chain attached. #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery #waxcarving #metalwork #metalart #bronze #handmade #demicient #reenactor #mysca #14thcentury #belt #scaathome

09.01.2022 My travels overseas olso included a major life event for me. I got married. It was a special day beyond words so I won't go on too much. We eloped in Scotland at Kilchurn castle. What I will show you is the ring I made for my wife. We didn't really get engaged but I had been designing and making this ring for her for almost 3 years. For just the right time. The stone is an Australian saphire. My grandad found the raw stone while traveling Australia and had it cut. It is in a... white gold setting with diamonds on a rose gold shank. My best work to date I think.

09.01.2022 Here are a couple of variations on reproduction chains I have made. The Order of The Swan chain has a tuder rose pendant instead of the swan and saint in the portrait. And the collar of 'SS' has an Order of Defense peer medallion used in the Society for Creative Anachronism. These are such powerful statement pieces. Bold and beautiful. I am always satisfied finishing Items like this.

08.01.2022 A while back I was given some amber and asked to make an SCA fealty chain. I had not made chain like this before so there was a very quick and very steep learning curve. The chain has 2 strands made in sterling silver and has 12 meters of 1mm thick wire turned into the links. I calculated I would need 9m, I missed the mark a little bit. All hand made with delicate laurel wreath in the center. Lots of work but turned out exactly like the design sketches. #handmade #metalwork #metalart #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery #sca #societyforcreativeanachronism #chain #silver #amber

06.01.2022 I had the privilege of making the site tokens for the largest medieval gathering in Australia this year. And what a job this was. It was the single largest job I have completed while working for myself. 860 tokens were made for the attendees beating my previous record 10 fold. I made tokens for the the Society for Creative Anachronism Australia, Kingdom of Lochac's largest event, Rowany Festival. The piece is based on a 14th century beer tap (a couple of examples included).... The tail also doubled up as a bottle opener. And a big shout out to Brhi from @madebyb4u for helping me get a good chunk finished. #handmade #metalwork #metalart #bloodandironjewellery #jewellery #wax #token #waxcarving #mysca #medieval #copper #rowanyfestival #lochac #beertap #medieval
