24.01.2022 It is disappointing to learn that the Medical Services Advisory Committee has not found in favour of funding tisagenlecleucel a chimeric antigen receptor T-cell... (CAR T-cell) therapy for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The committee felt that the evidence in support of the therapy was not as promising in DLBCL as it was in the paediatric population with acute lymphomblastic leukaemia. This leaves patients having to pay $600,000 for the treatment themselves. https://thelimbic.com//msac-rejection-of-car-t-cell-thera/
24.01.2022 The AMF13 trial has now been activated at LINEAR research institute, for those affected by T-Cell lymphoma. As a type of immunotherapy, AFM13 does not kill cancer cells directly but encourages the bodys own immune system to seek out and destroy the cells. It works by activating a type of immune cell, called a natural killer (NK) cell, and directing them to destroy the cancerous cells which harbour CD30, a molecule seen commonly on T-cell lymphoma cancer cells. When the natur...al killer cell is linked to the cancerous cell by AFM13 binding, its cell-killing ability is activated. This results in the bodys own immune cells destroying the cancer in a targeted manner. For further details on the trial, visit our Trials page on our website: https://www.bloodcancerwa.org.au/trials/ #bloodcancerresearchwa #bloodcancer #haematology #caner #lymphoma #clinicaltrials
23.01.2022 Exciting results published for patients with CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKAEMIA "Phase 1 study of selective BTK inhibitor zanubrutinib in B-cell malignancies and safety and efficacy evaluation in CLL" Has just been published. Dr Gavin Cull, clinical and laboratory haematologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) is the Principal Investigator of the Clinical Trial at SCGH, and also a co-author of the Publication, which uses Zanubrutinib.... Dr Cull (pictured) provided BCRWA with a quote about this exciting study: "This trial shows that zanubrutinib, a tablet taken twice daily, is very active in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. The response rates were very high and the CLL came under good control in nearly all the patients. The good news for patients is that zanubrutinib was well tolerated with very few having to stop the tablets due to side-effects. While longer follow-up is needed, most patients remain on zanubrutinib with their CLL under very good control" The publication can be found here: http://www.bloodjournal.org///2019/07/24/blood.2019001160
23.01.2022 Blood Cancer Research WA would like to start this week with some positive news, by welcoming our new Lymphoma Clinical Nurse Consultant, Helena Furdas, to our team! Helena graduated from nursing at Curtin University in 2009 and shortly thereafter began her haematology experience in 2010 whilst working at Royal Perth Hospital on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. Since then she has continued to work in haematology and in 2015 transitioned with the State Centre for Allogeneic ste...m cell transplant to Fiona Stanley Hospital. Here she enjoyed working in the Cancer Centre providing care for patients to keep them well, happy and out of hospital. As the newest member of the team Helena is excited to be the Lymphoma CNC and looks forward to helping patients navigate their journey through lymphoma. #staysafe #bloodcancerresearchwa #bcrwa #bloodcancer #haematology #westernaustralia #perth
23.01.2022 Dr Bradley Augustson is a haematology consultant in Western Australia with a specialist interest in MYELOMA. Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that develops from plasma cells in the bone marrow. Myeloma is often called multiple myeloma because most people (90%) have multiple places in the body affected where bone marrow is normally active (i.e. within the bones of the spine, skull, pelvis, the rib cage, and the areas around the shoulders and hips). Currently there is no cur...e for myeloma. It is considered a chronic, relapsing and remitting disease, but with treatment it can be controlled for many years. More clinical trials are needed to keep up to date research and treatment options available for patients. #bloodcancerresearchwa #bcrwa #haematology #bloodcancer #myeloma #clinicaltrials #westernaustralia *follow us on Instagram @blood_cancer_research_wa
22.01.2022 Congratulations to Dr Carolyn Grove (Senior Lecturer and Clinical & Laboratory Haematologist) and Dr Xuan Tan (WA Haematology Research Fellow), who have been awarded grant funding by WA Healths Research Translational Project scheme to conduct a Research project Next Generation Sequencing in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia; A Health economic analysis Next generation sequencing (NGS) enables researchers to analyse genetics/DNA at a never-before seen... level. Dr Grove & Dr Tans project aims to analyse patients with newly diagnosed Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, to identify those patients who carry a genetic mutation; non-deletional TP53 mutation. NGS will be carried out on patients prior to treatment, to asses risk factors and aid treatment decisions (as patients with this particular genetic mutation often dont do well with standard chemo-immunotherapy). The intended outcome of this analysis is to help form a business case to include next generation sequencing in haematological malignancies to assist with improved prognostication and improving treatment selection, in particular avoiding futile treatment which carries significant side effects for patients #research #grantfunding #haematologyresearch #bloodcancer #westernaustralia #bloodcancerresearchwa
22.01.2022 Dr. Gavin Cull who is a clinical and laboratory haematologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has co-authored a very important study which compares the safety and efficacy of two highly effective drugs ibrutinib and zanubrutinib in treating patients with Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia (WM). Below, Dr. Cull discusses the important findings this has for patients: Results of studies conducted at the Haematology Department, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, were published recentl...y in Blood journal and showed that zanubrutinib is a safe and very effective treatment for patients with WM. WM is a form of low grade lymphoma which involves the bone marrow and causes problems with low blood counts as it gets worse. The ASPEN study compared the efficacy and safety of ibrutinib, a first generation BTK-inhibitor, with zanubrutinib, a novel, highly selective BTK-inhibitor. While both drugs were highly effective in the treatment of WM, zanubrutinib was associated with less side-effects, including atrial fibrillation, and a trend toward better response quality. These results are consistent with the 3-year follow-up data of zanubrutinib in patients with WM, also published recently in Blood journal. Together, these studies confirm that zanubrutinib is a very effective treatment for patients with relapsed WM and is associated with a low incidence of side-effects. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32731259/ https://www.bloodcancerwa.org.au

16.01.2022 CRSP-ONC-001 trial is now open at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital This first-in-human trial will investigate the effectiveness and safety of CTX110, a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy that includes genetically modified T-cells to treat relapsed and refractory B-cell malignancies. CTX110 targets CD-19, a protein expressed by B-cell malignancies that play an important role in activating and signalling b-cells. CTX-110 is a genetically modified off-the-shelf cellular immunotherapy product that can be delivered to patients quickly. The study is potentially suitable for patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma or B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia whose disease has relapsed following at least two previous treatments.
15.01.2022 As 2019 draws to a close, Blood Cancer Research WA (BCRWA) reflect on what a spectacular year we have had in Western Australia. BCRWA has seen its FIRST fully-functioning year and what a difference we have already made to blood cancer patients, by providing them with hope by being able to access Clinical Trials: - 21 haematology clinical trials are now currently open for patients in WA, compared to NINE in 2018 (as BCRWA launched)... -1st ever haematology clinical trial opened at Hollywood and has recruited NINE patients with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukaemia) - 57 patients have been recruited onto NINE clinical trials at LINEAR Clinical Research. Compared to ZERO before BCRWA began - 280 blood cancer patients are currently on clinical trials thanks to BCRWA! 2019 has been the greatest start to Blood Cancer Research WA that we could have wished for. We cannot wait to see what is achieved in 2020!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT

14.01.2022 BGB-11417-101: Latest Trial now open at LINEAR Research Institute! In humans, the BCL2 gene helps regulate cell death or life. A specific protein called Bcl-2 is pro-survival, helping to keep cells alive. Some cancer cells express to much BCL-2 protein, which reduces the cells death response. Over-expression of the protein is a common finding in leukaemias and lymphomas. This phase 1 study offers patients with mature B-Cell malignancies a tablet of BGB-11417 which is a Bcl-2 ...inhibitor. This drug is a 2nd generation Bcl-2 inhibitor, other Bcl-2 inhibitor currently used in lymphomas and leukaemias have shown very promising results.
