10.01.2022 FOCUS ON THE SENSATION INSTEAD OF FEELING. A technique I use to manage stressful situations is to focus on the sensations rather than the feeling. What I mean is that feeling stressed, anxious or nervous, has a certain connotation, emotion, meaning and story we attach to it. ... Sensations are objective. They are simply responses by the body.eg. Heart racing, body temperature rising, shallow breathing. When we draw our attention to the sensation we are experiencing instead of the perceived stressor, we are present. And given we can only think of one thing at a time, in that moment, we let go of the story we hold about that perceived stressor. The more we do this, the less time and energy we give to that perceived stressor and the more control we have at managing how we can handle the external stressor moving forward.
