25.01.2022 There is an underlying purpose that coincides with every activity that we (clients and I) do together. We went for a bike ride on the weekend and we visited the ‘Road Safety Centre’. Sounds simple, but did you realise how many skills a simple bike ride requires you to integrate? Balance, gross motor, postural strength, muscle strength, grip strength, coordination and motor planning! ... As if that wasn’t complex enough, bike riding also requires social awareness to ride in the public safely! Our visit to the Road Safety Centre was the perfect setting for working on all of the above safely & in a contained environment. There were 1001 opportunities for discussions around safety, awareness of the environment, road rules, persevering when things get tricky, social boundaries and self regulation when things don’t go how we thought they would go. Looking forward to our next ride together

23.01.2022 Sharing from the @more than one neurotype page - important information that encourages us to consider what lies beneath the behavior that our children can present with

22.01.2022 Do you know how many skills are involved in eating? Oral motor Eye-hand coordinator Visual perception ... Visual motor integration Coordination Fine motor Postural control ... to name a few! I absolutely love taking clients out to eat! Not only do we get to work on ‘eating’ skills but we also get to work on social skills and norms while we are at it. Best of all, I love introducing clients to new food experiences! This little one is a fan of teriyaki chicken sushi and she braved it out this weekend by trying dumplings too. Bonus was that she was also a fan of the chopsticks!

21.01.2022 Perfect advice for a Sunday

16.01.2022 I’ve shared this before and I’ll share it again Children will tell you many things through their behavior. It’s up to us as parents/carers to help our children recognise this, help them articulate how they’re feeling, help them recognise how these feelings feel within their bodies (interception) and support them to come up with strategies for coping

15.01.2022 Sharing - a little visual that explains why it’s so hard for some children and/or young people to switch/transition to other tasks

12.01.2022 FREE training! I saw Tony Attwood in Adelaide recently and I must say it was the most informative, true reflection of ASD training I’ve ever been to. Tony has a son on the spectrum himself and has worked as a clinical psychologist for numerous years; specialising in diagnosis and treatment in children and adults. ... He knows a thing or two about the difference in presentation between females and males on the spectrum and has written and contributed to several books! Sue Larkey is a highly qualified educator who has spent many years teaching children on the spectrum! The knowledge that she shares with other professionals as well as parents and carers is exceptional! If you ever get a chance to see either of them in real life, I highly recommend! For now, check out the free online training

12.01.2022 The link between Anxiety and Autism. This will look different for many children but for us it results in: - Significant changes to bodily functions - Inconsolable crying (including shaking) ... - Excessively chewing objects - Repetitive questioning despite knowing the answer (ie repeatedly asking where are we going?) - Repetitive speech (wanting things said with the same wording, in the same tone and in the same stage of a ritualised routine) - Significant sleep disturbance (inability to settle) Tips for managing anxiety in little people: - Support them to identify what they are feeling and what this feels like in their bodies - Come up with some tools together so they can take some ownership over what works best for them (build a ‘coping kit’) - Provide routine, predictably and consistency - Allow time to process changes as far ahead of time as possible - Practice relaxation and mindfulness together - Practice ‘positive reframing’ (how we say what we are saying)

11.01.2022 This really gets me thinking about what I’m going to do for myself today! I hope it gets you all thinking too

09.01.2022 Resource Sharing: Book - I am an Aspie Girl by Danuta Bulhak-Paterson. This is such a beautiful book for younger girls on the spectrum. It gently and positively celebrates what it means to be a young girl on the spectrum and it also helps find ways to cope with obstacles. ... It talks about having a special talent for blending in with friends, how she (Lizzie) gets very tired after a day of socialising, how she worries a lot and how it can be tricky to identify how she is feeling. It’s a great book to add to your collection if you’re looking to start having these conversations with your little ladybug

08.01.2022 Sharing for anyone else that would like to be involved in this. It’s something I’m super passionate about and I’m looking forward to putting smiles on a few children’s faces during what is the toughest time of the year for a lot of these children If anyone is interested, I am happy to make a collection to drop off to the Gilberton location at once. ...
