25.01.2022 A trombone that was sat on and most repairers deemed it too hard to repair
24.01.2022 Sometimes a trumpet is overlooked as not needing a service because the outside is shiny. But the trumpet valves and internal tubing get so contaminated that the valves stick or are slow moving and the sound of the trumpet becomes stuffy because all the internal galleries are coated with contaminant ruining the sound. This trumpet had reached the point of being hard to play, just look at the coating on the valves, knowing that the same coating is in the valve tubes as well. So much better after service, clean inside as well as on the outside.
23.01.2022 Here is a clarinet that was left assembled for far too long and the bell became totally stuck when the cork glue failed and bell was at risk of damage just trying to get it free.
23.01.2022 This week it is trombone week, with 8 damaged or sad trombones in for work. Two had the same failed solder joint on the inner slide. Once this joint falls apart the trombone cannot be played at all. The good news is they both went back together perfectly and the slides now glide smoothly as they should.
23.01.2022 Trombones can be repaired, here is proof. This poor thing was stood on and metal was torn away, but careful work and taking time to do it properly, this trombone lives to fight another day. Steve Obrien and I worked our magic together.
22.01.2022 My trumpet sound different! That is the clue to this trumpet desperately needing a service which includes a thorough clean inside and out. Look at the photos and that is a fraction of the biological contamination I removed. Literally it was suffering from blocked pipes. So if your trumpet, French Horn or other brass instrument becomes hard to play, or just sounds wrong, then it is a pretty good indicator to needing a good service.
22.01.2022 Sometimes an instrument comes to me with supposedly one problem to fix, but often I find instrument has far more to be done.
20.01.2022 My saxophone wont play! Usually saxophones need adjustments to fix leaks caused by playing and handling, but this poor one has been badly neglected for years. Some school committees think they are saving money by having cheap service done on their instruments, or worse no work done. But here is why quality repairs are needed to keep instruments playing well. Not only are the pads a completely failed part but the tone holes are just as bad and require lots of careful repair.
20.01.2022 Here is the octave extension with the little hands that couldnt reach before. Now octave key works a treat. The smiles said it all.
20.01.2022 Saxophone that could not play low notes. This pad is totally failed and has been like it for some time. Not only would this note fail to play, everything below here would be wrecked too. New pad installed, set up correctly and problems solved.
19.01.2022 I received this saxophone yesterday to repair a failed solder joint, but when I inspected it with the owner, we discovered at least 10 playing issues, strange as it was taken in January to a repairer who charged the family $250, but obviously no work was actually done and annoyingly they also waited 6 weeks to get back an instrument that could not play.
18.01.2022 Sometimes a bit more work is needed on a school instrument. This trombone was in the cupboard and no one wanted to hire it because of how it looked. Ok it took ages and the corrosion was so bad that I needed to strip lacquer and corrosion with fine wet and dry paper, before buffing, and removing some dents but in the end it looks like a new trombone and I bet it will not be left on the shelf any more. All extra work was done without charge as a surprise for little school.
18.01.2022 Most flutes are grubby when they arrive for a service but this poor thing has been left for years and was in really heavily corroded state and all the keys were dry and stiff. Luckily after the service it was not only shiny but played perfectly. Job done!
18.01.2022 Sometimes you see an instrument that is twice as bad as normal grime. This one is even worse. Trumpets seem to win hands down with being really grotty inside and this one is right up there as truly bad. There is so much contamination that it turns your stomach, but its a job that just needs to be done....
17.01.2022 Same family as trombone mentioned before, but different repairer to trombone, but sadly same poor workmanship is evident. The tolerance on Brass instruments is very small indeed and this poor thing was supposedly serviced last year by someone who did no work on parts that matter. It was cleaned externally but that is all.
16.01.2022 Trombone slide woes. This trombone inner slide has had a dodgy repair done to it that has completely ruined the slide. The slide is not straight as can be seen, but the person trying to fix it has used excessive heat which has annealed the brass making it soft and flexible, and they have made the slide too wide as well. It can be work hardened again, and brought back to correct diameter, but the time and amount of work is huge, just to fix poor repair work by someone having a go.
16.01.2022 Too much love for this flute. Sometimes a bit of tender love and care can help your flute shine, but this poor thing has been drowned in polish. There was so much that it was causing it to leak and was rendered unplayable.
14.01.2022 Yesterday I received a clarinet for inspection to find out why it wasnt playing properly. It had sticking pads and poor adjustments throughout. I told the lady that it simply needed a thorough service and all that would be fixed and it would play well again. She was devastated as she had paid for a supposed serviced two months ago. The repairer had taken her money and just lubricated the keys. No cleaning, no adjustments done. Sadly I see about one of these every week. The video shows just one poor adjustment that would make this clarinet impossible to play.
14.01.2022 Looks can be deceiving. This perfect looking Yamaha alto sax had been dropped and was unplayable. At first sight it looked perfect, but the bell had taken a big hit, twisting and rotating the bell so that the lower keys couldnt close at all and what looked like a great sax turned out to be a saxophone needing major repair. After hours of alignment, persuasion and some much needed adjustments it plays beautifully.
12.01.2022 A shiny instrument doesnt mean much if the inside is badly corroded and dirty. This French Horn is really clean and sparkling on the outside but the valves barely rotate it has been so long since a proper service. All tubing and tuning slides had similar build up so it was no longer playing as it should....you pay for a service, make sure that is what you get.
10.01.2022 Carpet beetles strike again. This 30 year old Yamaha clarinet has been in storage for years and hardly looks used, except all the pads have been eaten by carpet beetles. A full re-padding and service and it is now playing and looking like a new clarinet.
10.01.2022 Sometimes everything looks normal but the clarinet just sound dreadful when played. It may be a visit from a hungry carpet beetle that just loves the felt in the pads.
09.01.2022 This is job satisfaction! I had a call from a mother of a saxophone player that was holding his saxophone at school and he was pushed by another boy and down went the sax hitting the saxophone neck and bending it almost flat. What a mess and the boy was so upset. But with a bit of skill and the right tools the neck was repaired and sax is again playing beautifully.
08.01.2022 Carpet beetles love felt, and really enjoy clarinet and flute pads. They are pale insects the size of a grain of rice, and if you look in your instrument case and see little insects and dust, chances are it is too late for some of your pads. Here is an old clarinet with typical pad damage from an infestation of carpet beetles. If you find them vacuum away all signs of them, remove all parts of your instrument and spray inside case with insecticide, close case and leave it over night before putting your instrument back into case.
05.01.2022 A trombone that was supposedly serviced last year by someone else, but what I found says volumes . Inside was heavily contaminated and slide was binding badly. There was also an very old injury, a dent in the out slide tube with the same dent inside, so this slide was really sad. But to see the photo of what it was like, the tuning slide was full of corrosion and contamination that takes 2 to 3 years to reach if nothing is done. Whoever serviced this before just cleaned the outside of the bell. I spent an age, but now the slide actually glides, dents, corrosion and contamination are all gone.
04.01.2022 A little girl that just loves saxophone but couldnt reach the octave key. So I made an adjustable extension that just clips onto the octave key. Buffet saxophones have the octave pivots on the other side and to top it off, our girls hand is so small she cannot reach the thumb rest anyway. Quite a challenge, but with her using a palm key post for her thumb, the extension is just right.
03.01.2022 Trombone with something jammed in slide. This instrument came to me to see what I could do. It had been serviced by a major repairer and it just wasnt right. I could see something deep inside outer slide, but it was totally stuck. So off with the end and there was a piece of brass tube wedged into end of slide. It had damaged internal face of slide and caused a bend in top slide tube. After thorough cleaning and polishing of inside of slide, it went back together for more remedial work to fix the problem.
03.01.2022 This is the find of a lifetime for a boy that was desperately trying to save up for a baritone saxophone. He found it in council cleanup, so he went to front door and asked if it was alright take it. They were happy to see him take the saxophone and were very impressed with his approach to ask for permission. Ok, it needs every pad replaced and a big bend in body and keys fixed, but with a bit of careful work it will be a really nice playing Buescher.
02.01.2022 A school tuba, that doesnt play anymore because the school wants save money on servicing. This one had frozen tuning slides, no water key corks and filthy valves that were also stuck. Servicing an instrument keeps it playing at its best as long as the service is correctly done. Poor economics allowing instruments to get to this state.
02.01.2022 Another brass crush. The young player trod on the bell and was so upset. Luckily with the right tools and skills it came back to the right shape and most importantly right sound again.
02.01.2022 Here are some of the things that can go wrong with your sax
02.01.2022 This trumpet was serviced by someone that took the money but did no real work. The valves are not done and are corroded and filthy , you have paid top money for a cloth wiped over the outside of the instrument which takes just a few minutes. Or in this case a chemical bath, and not neutralised too boot. This particular instrument is owned by a school, no one checked the instruments when they come back or had someone to properly inspect them and test play them.
