17.01.2022 It's #WetlandWednesday! Did you know #Australia has 66 Ramsar wetlands covering 8.3+ million hectares. @RamsarConv #wetlands are those that are representative, rare & important for conserving biological diversity, storing carbon and filtering sediments & pollutants.

16.01.2022 Watch how Dr Maria Palacios and her team at the Blue Carbon Lab are breaking the walls to nature-based finance to become one of Deakin’s finalists in the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year Science Engagement Category. Winners announced Nov 9th: http://ow.ly/p59f50C9El7

16.01.2022 Congrats to Holger Jänes! His PhD has been conferred by @Deakin for his outstanding research on the 'Value of Australian coastal ecosystems for fish and fisheries'. Some of his thesis findings include: 1 hectare of #seagrass supports 55,000 more fish a year compared to seabed without vegetation. This represents a commercial value of fish of up to $21,200 per hectare per year. Across Australia 117+ individual #fish species use seagrass as a nursery area, 23 species use m...angroves, and 8 species use saltmarshes as nursery areas. More: Jänes et al. 2019. 14.01.2022 Meet Dr Melissa Ward! Mel graduated from UC Davis with a PhD in marine ecology (2020), where she studied California’s #bluecarbon (seagrasses and saltmarshes) and the potential for a seagrass ‘phyto-remediation’ strategy to mitigate ocean acidification. Thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship and American Australian Association Award, Mel will join us in 2021 to work on various blue carbon projects. Welcome to the team! https://www.bluecarbonlab.org/visiting-scientists-2021/

13.01.2022 Shout-out to our PhD alumni, Dr Quinn Ollivier who recently received the 'WaterNSW -Dam Good Award' for his work on the response to the 2019/20 fires in the Sydney Drinking Water Catchments.
