14.01.2022 Just one hour from Katoomba, Glow Worm Tunnel in Lithgow is a spectacular place to visit. Built in the 1900s as part of the railway line to Newnes Kerosene Shale Works, the tunnel curves to almost 180 degrees, making it very dark inside. This dark, damp environment is an ideal habitat for glow worms and when the line closed in the 1940s, nature reclaimed the tunnel and the glow worms moved in. These bioluminescent worms are sensitive to disturbance so when inside, turn off yo...ur torch, be still and quiet, and wait for the magic to happen.
