21.01.2022 Heres a great old clip of Joni Mitchell singing her beautiful song, Both Sides Now (that some of you have learnt as an instrumental). Joni is playing in Open D tuning DADF#AD (low strings to high = 654321). Best wishes, Nigel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NdsnFZm0X4

20.01.2022 ‘In the Shadowland’ a song for the Blue Mountains third time lucky! We've got to take care of this beautiful place. Blackheath is facing devastation from the proposed Great Western Highway Upgrade Program unless the NSW Governments promise of a tunnel under the town is supported by the residents of Blackheath. We also need a safe highway to be able to evacuate the town in the event of a severe bushfire emergency. An accident or a fallen tree could trap us on the present road. The rest of the Blue Mountains have a safe highway we deserve one too. We support the protest, in regard to the B-double truck issue, but let's save Blackheath first, while asking the Government to look at other alternatives for transporting freight through or around the Blue Mountains. https://youtu.be/3j9qh-YXiNg

19.01.2022 Starting today... $1 from every guitar lesson goes to help the farmers until the drought is over. We are now officially authorised to collect donations for Rural Aid.

19.01.2022 Martin and I will shortly be giving guitar lessons on Skype. Blue Mountains Guitar School will resume regular lessons once the Coronavirus Pandemic is over. Best wishes to you all... Nigel

19.01.2022 83 Ordinary People is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Granville Train Disaster, 18 January 1977. I wrote the song in 1987 using a simple Dropped D guitar accompaniment with a capo on the first fret. We built up the song in the studio. The chords are: VERSE D (play 6th string), A7sus (play 5th string) CHORUS D6sus (fret 6th and 1st strings at the fifth fret), D, A7sus, D. Have a bit of a play in Dropped D tuning (in D or Dm). Just tune your 6th string down a tone to E... a new land awaits!

18.01.2022 Just letting everyone know that we are officially COVID SAFE.

15.01.2022 As all our students learn to play the main riff of Rhiannon (as a monotonic exercise), I thought you might like to see the original version performed by Fleetwood Mac in 1976, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgmRb3MlpHQ

15.01.2022 Blue Mountains Guitar School resumes face to face lessons as COVID-19 fades away. Friendly, professional tuition for children, teenagers and adults. Guitar lessons since 1983

13.01.2022 As all of our students learn Landslide, here is a beautiful performance of the song by Fleetwood Macs Stevie Nicks (she wrote it) and Lindsay Buckingham in 2004. This is the version from which I tabbed out the instrumental break, which most of you learn once youve been playing for a few years. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM7-PYtXtJM

12.01.2022 Blue Mountains Guitar School is currently closed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Guitar lessons on Skype will be available shortly. Were all going to have more time to practise!... and to enjoy beautiful Mountain views like this one to the west of Blackheath.

12.01.2022 Southerly Buster (photo taken by Alan Egan at Avalon in 1980). The tune slowly grew over a two-year period from an amalgamation of two different riffs in Em. I recorded it at the 2WS studios on a Studer analogue tape recorder (2" wide tape) engineered by Gary OConnor and Mastered by Don Bartley at Studios 301 in Sydney. The Eagles, Neil Young and almost everybody else recorded on one of these reel-to-reels when analogue ruled the day. Im just so glad I had the opportunity to capture one of my tunes (and 83 Ordinary People) on a machine of that quality. Heres a link to these wonderful machines (click on 7:33) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDj7k4R4hoM

Im sorry to do this but now that the virus has entered our community I feel its in everyones best interests to do so. I will be back in touch with you at the end of next week. 04.01.2022 This week marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of Mary Travers of Peter, Paul & Mary fame one of the greatest harmony groups of all time. PP&M helped bring the music of Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot and John Denver into the spotlight. I was lucky enough to see them in Sydney in 1962 and the reason I dropped piano and took up guitar. Here is the brilliant BBC 4 recording of their concert in 1965... an example of the music we baby boomers grew up with. No fancy effects... just guitars, voices and sheer talent (and one rather lonely bass player) Turn it UP! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdcapT2Tdag
