22.01.2022 Going Slow At the Heart of Therapy We live in a world where the pace of life is fast. We often eat on the run, talk on our mobiles while driving, have a full weekly schedule of work and activities and then fill our weekends with events to include family, friends and social networks We demand more too. We want the latest fashion item, to keep up our exercise regime, buy the must have new album. And if our car is in for service for more than two days it becomes a big deal! I th...Continue reading
18.01.2022 Skin Brushing Now the warmer weather has arrived, it is a good time to get your natural skin brush out and give your skin some regular skin brushing with a natural brush. Best done prior to having a shower. Benefits: stimulates peripheral circulation therefore nourishing the skin, unblocks pores and ingrown hairs on legs and arms from the colder months of heavy clothing, stimulates lymphatic circulation. After skin brushing during the warmer months, have a shower directly aft...er to remove dead skin cells and clean the skin. If you want to increase circulation to the skin at the end of your shower, turn the hot water off and let the cold water run over your skin for a minute. Direction of skin brushing: A good brush all over the body with brush strokes up the arms and legs to assist circulation to the heart and for lymphatic benefits. Brushing gently over the breast area for women with strokes towards the armpits are a great circulation & lymphatic benefit in this area of the body. Often women have this area covered daily with a bra and the skin and circulation in this area can benefit from some skin brushing gently. Abdominal brushing with a general rule of clockwise when you are looking down at your tummy. You choose how much pressure you apply to certain areas of the body. You may want to be more vigorous on your legs and back. Explore what feels good for your skin and body. NOTE: some people prefer to use an exfoliating glove. These can be used in the shower. Remember: keep your skin brush dry and do not use it in the shower. After your dry skin brushing & shower; apply a lovely natural cream or oil to your skin to moisturise your skin. YOUR SKIN WILL THANK YOU FOR THIS HEALTH TREATMENT Contraindications: do not do a warm and then cold shower if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition or if you are currently active with a chest infection or a skin condition where your GP has not recommended this. Facts: our skin is the largest organ of our body. Some of the skins functions are to eliminate waste products, help to cool and regulate body temperature through sweating. The skin assists in converting Vitamin D from the sun into our body. In general, the other function of the skin is to protect the muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs.

13.01.2022 Mushroom Soup Recipe This recipe I received from an old friend years ago. I think it originated from Stephanie Alexanders Cookbook. Mushrooms have been in season during the Autumn months. Some of their health benefits:... Vitamin B group including B2, B3, B12 and folic acid, the minerals phosphorus, Sulphur and Bromine. Depending on the type of mushroom will depend on the range of vitamins and minerals. Experiment with different edible mushrooms from the supermarket or Asian food markets. Some of the most common mushrooms used for soups include: button mushrooms (milder flavour), Portobello (richer flavour) and Shiitake mushrooms (known for their great Immune health benefits). Choose one type of mushroom or you can add a few different varieties for this recipe. RECIPE: 375 grams mushrooms 60 grams butter 1-2 cloves of garlic chopped 1-2 tablespoons of chopped parsley Salt Pepper Nutmeg (grate from the whole pod for fresher flavour) 1 thick slice of bread 4 cups of water Stock added to your liking DIRECTIONS: Chop mushrooms. Heat butter gently in a large pan. Add mushrooms to coat them. Then add garlic, 1 tablespoon of parsley, salt, pepper and nutmeg quantities to your liking. Cook for a few more minutes. Add water and stock to the pan. Place the sliced bread on top. Cover with lid and simmer for approx. 15 minutes. Blend soup. Serve with remaining chopped parsley on top. Enjoy :)

08.01.2022 Collateral Beauty: Love Time Death Explores the theme of a man’s deep grief and withdrawal from normal life after the loss of his daughter. Will Smith plays the role of this man who is in an existential crisis. The movie creatively applies people expressing these 3 themes of LOVE TIME DEATH in attempts to connect with this man who has withdrawn from normal life and is in a deep process. The people hired by friends of the grief-stricken man, is to remind this man of the imp...ortance of engagement in life, his work, friends and family again. I think the movie draws out the withdrawal of this man in grief a bit too much. However, the purpose of the movie is to demonstrate how loss and grief affects people in many areas of their life. Grief, depression and loss of the meaning of life are often seen in our professional work as Therapists with individuals, couples, and families. If people seek help when they really need it, this can de-escalate how they are at home, work and with family and friends. When a huge life change hits people, getting support, strategies and resourcing with life skills can make a real difference to people's lives. Collateral Beauty. Worth checking out.

Get creative with your porridge :) ... OATS This basic staple of oats, enjoyed as porridge in colder months and muesli in warmer months has a huge variety of ways to be eaten as a delicious breakfast of choice. Traditionalists can stay with their basic porridge recipe or they can get very creative with healthy options at breakfast. Oats (Avena sativa) are a highly nutritious grain, containing minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and protein, particularly: Phosphorous, Vitamin B group & Vitamin E. Whole rolled oats are best. Organic preferable. The more processed and cut the grain, the less nutritional value. To keep the nutritional value, dont overcook your oats Oats put in a stocking or muslin bag and added to a bath has been used for treating skin conditions such as eczema or buy natural oat soap as an option. Historically, Oats were used for soothing ulcerated gastrointestinal conditions and to calm hyperactive children. In Herbal Medicine, Oat Extract is recommended if a person is exhausted, anxious and it is often included in digestive tonics. Oats are an excellent nervine tonic. SPICES Cinnamon: the most common spice added to porridge. This spice is soothing on your digestive system and warming for the body. Cardamom: extract a few of the black seeds from inside the cardamom pod and add to your porridge for an aromatic flavour. Crush the black seeds before adding if you wish. Use in small doses as the aroma is strong. Great combination with coconut milk instead of cows milk. Cardamom is a calming spice for the digestive system. People add variations to their porridge such as: Also, Oat porridge can be consumed as a dessert at night with honey and nutmeg. Nutmeg: is a gentle calming spice. 04.01.2022 Spending more time in your garden during corona virus? A good weed: Dandelion Have you noticed the plant in your lawn which is known to be a weed? Dandelion. The leaves are very nutritious and can be added to salads like you would add rocket. ... Make sure you identify and pick the right dandelion. There are 2 main types we find in Australia. The medicinal nutritious dandelion has paler leaves which are toothed along the edges. The leaves are hairless compared to the other dandelion variety and have a smaller stem with one yellow flower. If you eat the leaves of the darker leafed plant variety of dandelion it is not harmful, but less tasty and less nutritious. Dandelion leaves contain: high quantities of beta-carotene Vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and Vitamin C. Dandelion when used medicinally is also a diuretic, which is useful for people with fluid retention and women who retain fluid just prior to menstruation. The leaves are highly alkaline and are a good digestive tonic if you have been eating too many sugary and acidic food and beverages. If you pick the leaves during spring, summer and autumn the plant will continue to produce more leaves for your salad bowl. Dandelion leaves and root are also well known as a liver tonic. Helping the liver to cleanse the body from infections, such as a flu virus. A few cups of Dandelion tea can be very helpful for the liver when you are at the tail end of a cold or flu. To help to eliminate these infections from the body. Your liver will thank you for it.
