24.01.2022 After some hard yakka today, Lachie and I cleaned up both the compost and soil bays. They are now anticipating delivery We also prepped two more beds, cleaned out another bed and did some clearing in the banana patch. I am thinking to use the banana trunks in the gutter edges I have dug on the swales out front. What do you think? Good idea?... We also planted out more trees. Two pomegranate, a fig and another Davidson plum. Thanks so much to Jemma and Sandra at Old Farm Nursery for always being so knowledgeable and helpful in finding the trees that I am after. We think you are awesome. Transplanting some more pop up tomatoes and some gifted tomatoes in this blissful evening sun. Hoping they will find their feet over the next day or two before it begins to warm up at the end of the week.... The snails are driving me insane but I persist in only hand removal as I cannot tell most of them apart and I know how important they are and that some of them are endangered.... down to three okra now from five. What is your best trick for keeping snails at bay? Other than pellets and eggshells. Has anyone tried wood ash? I think I’ll give that a go. Melissa

22.01.2022 You lookin’ at me The baby chicks have hatched! There are a variety of chickens. Silkies... Mixed bantams Olive eggers As you know, this is Millicent’s venture. Millicent has 20 chicks to sell. Pick up will be this Friday afternoon/evening or the weekend. They will be one week and a half old by then. They are $12 each. We cannot sex them. It is lucky dip. Any money Millicent makes she is putting towards buying another round of eggs, more equipment and education. Please comment or message if you’d like to pre order. Thank you for your support. 17.01.2022 Beans from the early planting now in full on production mode. Yay! If you plant with me these were sown 8 weeks ago. Yes that’s a long time for beans but the weather has been so unpredictable. Poor plants don’t know what is happening Heaps of seeds went down this afternoon. I’ll share tomorrow.... Melissa

16.01.2022 Call out for assistance I have resisted buying those plastic tree plant labels for a few years now and have finally decided that I will recycle tin lids to keep the tree variety integrity. If anyone who lives near me is able to save palm size or larger tin lids I would be so grateful and would be happy to collect from you ... With thanks Melissa

13.01.2022 All set up at the Earth Market Maitland this morning. Millicent helped me get all set up. Now it is maths practice time! Hope you can make it! Melissa

10.01.2022 Lots more achieved this morning on the farm. Thinned the bananas and planted out more suckers in the chicken area. This is the lowest part of the farm. It also has heavy clay but because the chickens have been here for many years the top 30cm or so of soil is actually becoming really healthy. There were so many worms and other forms of life. And, it just smells really good. The soil that is, not the chicken poo Then all the banana leaves went out to zone 5 as mulch and all ...the trunks went out the front to the fruit forest swales. I started digging the trenches yesterday and was able to place the banana trunks in. I think it will out work well. If you are cutting down any banana trunks and want to move them on, I need a few more As you know I love keeping records so it will be interesting to see how long they take to decompose. Duly noted, date of laying. Finally Lachie helped me (actually he did most of it) dig the very deep hole in the chicken run required for the dragon fruit trellis. Once we went down about 40cm it really was just clay. Like potting clay really. Nevertheless we persevered and finally I am able to be the proud owner of a trellis and soon to be dragon fruit mama. She produced one last season. Hopefully she will produce more this season for us to eat and share. I am considering putting paw paw trees there too. What do you think? Melissa

05.01.2022 While doing my morning walk... I found those first season beans.... they are beginning to crop. Yay! If you planted beans when I did and haven’t checked them for a while, then maybe yours have some beans too!... We are planting beans every three weeks currently for a continuous crop. You can spread it out a bit further if you need to. Remember to sow about 5 plants for each member of your family. Melissa Permaculture Principle: Obtain a yield.
