03.01.2022 Tonight the @australianburlesquemuseum is opening our first exhibition in our new home in the nation’s glittering capital of Canberra. Tonight, we are presentin...g stripped, shed layers from teasers - whose names did not fit into the old hat Harvard school of history. History gives us root, holds us in stead of what came before to enable us to forge a path into our future. We have been collecting from forgotten pockets, moth-balled wardrobes and treasured trunks - we have listened to untold stories and gathered them for you tonight. Our history moves with slippery fluidity, from the midnight hours, between rounds of drinks bought, smiles caught, desires fraught. Our history is queer, what cultural analyst Carolyn Dinshaw refers to as a touch felt across time a loving embracemanifested from the ghosts of historical spirits - the performative link between the past and present. We are building an archive of Australian erotic performance art, from strippers, sex workers, burly babes and showgirls - the great undressers from the past present. Tonight we celebrate Australia’s rich stripping heritage - from the kinky, the queer and the cunt proud, from the fluorescent femmes and the bristling bustiers of burlesque royalty. From the gritty sex club subculture to the Glittering Golden Mile, from the mafia run clubs of King’s Cross to grand Parisian stages, from Tivoli showgirls to our Grand Duchess, legend of Australian burlesque - Elizabeth Burton. From a vanguard of vag-flashers - the Kozmic Lovedolls, from intergalactic sex clowns @glitta_supernova_experience and Sex Intents, from Gurlesque to @lolathevamp . From our shining showgirls @sharynejewell_dancelikeadiva and the illustrious Miss Mia Mortal, to the Canberrean queens - Miss Kitka and Lani Garrish, Deb Delicious. From the innovators of our industry, @theimogenkelly (our Queen of Australian Burlesque), to @moira_finucane and @maudedavey , & @belladejac We are making history and the process of collecting history need not be relegated to a select few of historians. Making history is a community endeavour fused from a collective of like-minded ecdiasts!
