25.01.2022 Something special happened this week in the Mulga Lands. South Western Yellow-footed rock-wallabies were taken off the Threatened Species list a couple of months ago. Releases have been made and all are doing well. The very last from the breeding program in Charleville was released this week. Now you have to pull on your boots as the best national parks to view them in are Mariala and Hell Hole Gorge. Go you little beauties! #experiencecharleville #outbackqueensland #threatened #qldnationalparks

21.01.2022 Thank you Judi N. for sharing this image of the Maheno on Fraser Island. She is becoming worn and weathered. Built in 1905, the SS Maheno was one of the first turbine-driven steamers and has become not only a famous shipwreck on Fraser Island but also a landmark on 75 Mile Beach.

20.01.2022 Friday Fast Photo Fact: The first known aerial photograph was taken in 1858 by French photographer and balloonist, Gaspar Felix Tournachon, known as "Nadar". In 1855 he had patented the idea of using aerial photographs in mapmaking and surveying, but it took him 3 years of experimenting before he successfully produced the very first aerial photograph. It wasof ther French Village Petit-Becetre taken from a tethered hot-air balloon, 80 meters above the ground. Unfotunatly the image no longer exists, however what a feat!

14.01.2022 Friday Fast Photo Fact: The First Photo of a person was accidental - apparently. Look to the far left and there is a person it is thought, getting their shoes cleaned, which is why they stayed still long enough for his photograph to be taken.

07.01.2022 Friday Photo Fact: Potassium Chloride and Aluminum made the Fiest flashes. One of the most dangerous photography facts is about flashes. Photographers mixed potassium chloride and aluminium. This mixture would create a bright light when introduced to a spark.... These connections often led to violent explosions if they were not properly mixed. If you have a Speedlite, you have it easy.

05.01.2022 Friday Fast Photo Fact: British scientist Sir John Herschel first coined the term ‘photography’ in 1839.

04.01.2022 Look up tonight at 7.03pm as the Space X Starlink satellite group will be zapping across the sky - it's like a little line of dots. I saw it last night and it's really amazing. While this chart set for the Gold Coast it should be ok for most of the country. It will be starting at the horizon and moving towards the Southern Cross.

03.01.2022 Look up tomorrow night and you may spot the International Space Station as it makes an appearance. Best time for viewing is from 6.45pm but it won’t be visible for long as the reflection from the sun fades. It’s moving fast so use a fast shutter speed to freeze it.

02.01.2022 Friday Fast Photo Fact: The First Handheld Digital Camera was invented in 1975.

02.01.2022 Cool cat: We love these stories of how photography enriches our lives. By Bluedog Subscriber David T. 'I was walking the streets of Bangalow in northern NSW and spotted this amazing character wearing a bright red suit and furiously writing poetry. I was too shy to say hello but took a photograph with my little Fuji camera. I was pleased with the result and actually printed the photo and handed it to him on the next trip and thanked him for the opportunity.'

02.01.2022 Friday Fast Photo Fact: The 900-Pound Camera that only took one photo! This insane camera was part of a publicity stunt in 1900 by the Chicago & Alton Railway to photograph the Alton Limited locomotive. The 900 lbs. camera traveled six miles by rail car, then was carried a quarter-mile into a field by 15 men. Photographer George Lawrence (famous for his post-1906 earthquake photo of San Francisco) then took the only exposure the camera ever made on an insane 8 x 4.5 ft. glass negative (the same as the track gauge). It might seem like a crazy stunt, but it was actually considered a successful PR move, even though it cost $5,000 (about $161,000 today). Three prints were sent to the 1900 Paris Exposition, where they won the grand prize for photographic excellence.

01.01.2022 Friday Fast Photo Fact: Anna Atkins may have created the first photo book. Atkins, a British botanist, learned early photographic processes from Henry Fox Talbot. She is also one of history’s first female photographers. Atkins made a visual documentation of botanical specimens using the Cyanotype process. She then compiled her cyanotypes into the 1843 publication of Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. Atkins produced three volumes of Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions between 1843 and 1853. Today, only 17 copies of the book are known to exist.
