09.01.2022 Body of Work: '205 Kilometers' Artist Statement: "This body of work is a personal photo documentation of my weekly journey from my residence in Nowra through to Canberra to spend time with my partner, passing through different surroundings and environments along the way. The construction of these images came from multiple stops along the way and photographing down-low perspectives of the center of the roads and highways. ... Robert Adams' 27 Roads influenced the subject with his works displaying highways across the West Coast of America and the changes made over time. It is a visual journey that progresses along with the audience from start to finish over time, which also inspired my chronological display from the beginning to the end of my travel. It was important to create a piece that flows with each photograph without having too much repetition and showing different places and surroundings much alike Adams' work. I expanded on the typical landscape and experimented with various focal points for a more abstract composition for originality. In a person retrospective, the continuous and constant journey I take will end, becoming an old memory in the event that something will affect my current position in life. Even now since it has been several months of committing to this particular trip, there is a sense of nostalgia along the way. Trent Parke served as another influence in the creative process. Although not particularly the same subject, Parke visually explores various and unorthodox ways to present his emotions into his works, displaying haunting imagery in relation to memory and memories being forgotten. I replicated his black-and-white aesthetic along with the contrasting shadows and highlights to also express these relative feelings and blend in with my concept. For framing and presentation, Nadav Kander's Dark Line series was replicated within my vertical landscape format as well as the exhibition presentation, with each image being bordered and alongside one another in a window-like structure, allowing a view into my perspective and journey. The process in capturing these images proved both challenging and dangerous as it required taking to pulling across the side of the highway and attempting to angle the camera as best as possible in the center of the road. It also required patience, I want to show a quiet presence with no traffic being captured and showing a sense of loneliness on this journey." Lindsay Sultana
