22.01.2022 We have a few echidnas living inthe yard - you might be lucky enough to see one ambling along. Today this young one trundled up to the house and right up to my foot (you need to stand still), probably hoping I was a rock where ants are to be found. :)

20.01.2022 The longer nights are a good time to be at the end of the hostel garden with a camera... here the Milky Way plays hide and seek with one of the Bluegums for which the hostel is named. (The purple hue in the sky is due to residual airglow from the aurorae we have been having recently.) I should add that while I was taking photos that night I could hear dolphins huffing their way around the bay....! Make sure you click on the photo for the full length view..

20.01.2022 Auroras have been very few and far between this year...I think this is the first I've seen..! I was unprepared and had to make a dash for the end of the hostel garden and got this just before the clouds rolled in...will keep an eye on them for the rest of the night in hopes they clear a bit...(Edit: They didn't clear...in fact it rained! :( )

19.01.2022 We are thankful there is no fire emergency on the Peninsula at this time, but please note the TOTAL FIRE BAN in place and that most of our tracks are closed as a precaution. The list of track closures is in this advice from Parks and Wildlife...

19.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who has checked in with us by phone or via this page. The hostel is still closed and will remain so for some time. Sorry we can't invite you to stay with us again just yet.

16.01.2022 Sometimes there is more magic at the bottom of the hostel garden at 2am than you have in your dreams....

15.01.2022 COVID19: We are fortunate to be situated in an area where as far as we know there is no instance of COVID 19, however guests are travelling and checking in from many different areas so we have decided to implement a few changes. We now request a minimum 2 night stay (maximum 5 nights)....there is plenty to do and see locally... We will no longer book separate parties into the 4 bed dorm...4 in one group can still book, but if just one or two guests travelling together check ...in they will have the dorm to themselves. For this reason, the cost of the dorm for the first guest only will increase to $45 per night...second and subsequent guests will continue to pay $30. Guests booking on Airbnb will no longer be able to 'instant book' and will have to request a booking. Oh - and no handshakes when you arrive ;) Please message me or call 0407401865 if you have questions about any of this. See more

15.01.2022 COVID 19: Well our last implementation was short lived... the hostel is now CLOSED for the forseeable future. Sorry for that but it seems nobody is travelling anyway. Keep your distance, wash your hands, keep fit, stay cheerful and we'll see you all again on the other side of this unpleasant event. Happy trails always...Phil and Marion, the chooks and all the other critters.......*

13.01.2022 Guests often ask if they can see any wildlife in the hostel grounds and I usually tell them to turn off the lights, sit outside at night and just wait for the little 'hoppies' to visit...we have pademelons, wallabies and bandicoots grazing regularly, and recently a large wombat has been spotted near the water's edge - it's distinctive square scat is still there, marking its territory... But today, cleaning up in the hostel kitchen I looked out the window and saw one of our resident echidnas busily devouring the little ants you can see on the rock...you don't have to go far!

11.01.2022 Mid-winter...it's Milky Way season and on a clear night you don't need to go far to see forever. This is how the centre of our Milky Way Galaxy looks from the hostel. The 'core' is 25,000 light years away and the bright star in the centre of the photo is actually a planet - Jupiter.

06.01.2022 Port Arthur Lavender Farm is looking pretty...and so are the roses...

05.01.2022 A New Year dawns over the Eaglehawk Neck's popular Tesselated Pavement, just a cooee away from Bluegum Hostel. Happy Trails to you all in 2020!

03.01.2022 The Lavender Farms are looking their best just now...harvesting the flowers has begun, but there will still be some blooms to visit for a couple more weeks... and there's always the icecream...
