19.01.2022 Sometimes we all need a bit of me time. Our quiet area in the corner of the classroom provides children with a space to retreat to, where they can spend some peaceful time with their own thoughts, reading a book, watching the fish, or just relaxing in our spinning egg chair.

18.01.2022 This toy (intended primarily for children to practice their balance while pedal-walking) was used by several inventive children who enjoyed rolling it down a slope and watching the caterpillars engraved on the pedals move comically up and down. They couldn’t stop laughing at how the caterpillars looked as if they were chasing people!

17.01.2022 The Monday/Tuesday class’s whale craft earlier in the week led to this surprise for the Thursday/Friday class: a whale migratory path on the wall towards the bathroom! If your child attended Blue Gum this week, ask them what a baby whale is called - most of them will remember it from our discussions & explorations!

15.01.2022 Each year on 8 June we celebrate World Oceans Day. As a provocation to start a conversation and inquiry we set up a shark washing experience. As the children washed the sharks we talked about how we need to look after all the living creatures in our ocean. Some animals who have been impacted by oil spills really do need washing.

14.01.2022 We love our beautiful oceans and today we thank Mother Ocean for all her precious gifts.

13.01.2022 Montessori‘s number rods help to emphasise the difference between a quantity and the corresponding symbol that represents it. The physical nature of the materials lets the child make their own observations about quantities. This child, for example, remarked as she lifted out the ‘10 rod’: wow, this is so much bigger than the other ones. Extension games (such as those seen in these videos) can be played to help reinforce the understanding of the number symbols.

13.01.2022 Several of the younger children accepted an invitation to engage with these wooden sewing cards. With time & practice, we teachers see how children learn to refine their movements & master skill sets. A popular extension to this activity is sewing around hole-punched cards with plastic needles, before progressing to sewing buttons with metal needles and thread. The first button sewn is often a source of great pride for the child!

12.01.2022 Our regular Thursday ‘Mystery Object’ session was enhanced by a child bringing in an object to share with the rest of the class. We tried using different senses to see if we could figure out what it was: touching it, smelling it, shaking and listening to it... can you guess what it might be just from the photos?

08.01.2022 Children love this whisking activity. They use pure soap flakes mixed with water that they collect for themselves in a small ceramic jug. They pour the soap flakes in and mix with their choice of utensils, either a whisk or a pair of beaters. The children delight in seeing the bubbles foam up. They imagine they are making bubble bath, cooking food, making potions etc.

06.01.2022 The Starry Night is an oil on canvas painting by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June 1889. Today June 2020 the children were inspired to create their own version. This then led to lots of discussion about the colours and patterns in the original artwork.

03.01.2022 Our compost in a jar looks like it’s nearly ready to use on our garden. These photos are from over the last 8 weeks. It’s amazing how quickly it turned from waste to food for the vegetable garden and it has been really interesting to see it decompose in the glass jar.
