23.01.2022 Big W has long black singlet dresses for $15! Perfect for a Troupe or Student Performance, can be the base for a lovely costume for summer, team it up with a hip scarf and for a lovely cover-up idea, matching gypsy top. Perfect for the travelling dancer, as it doubles as a sun dress, beach cover-up, then straight to an evening hafla and/or performance!
22.01.2022 Here's a quick project - making practise Zills! I used very large buttons and 4 hair ties (you can see how I threaded them up). Adjusting them to fit is easy, you just pull in the elastic until they fit, and to keep them on, you thread your finger/thumb through both loops. They are also super quiet, so you can practise without disturbing the neighbours!

18.01.2022 This is what is meant as a "mood board" which is how designers get inspiration for their creations. Next time you are thinking of your next costume, instead of searching for "the one", create a mood board (Pintrest/notebook/iPad/or even just down on paper)

10.01.2022 Haven't done a costume/decor blog for a while, but seeing as I've been getting a few queries from people wanting to decorate their home in permanent "halloween"..., and where to buy deccos to do so, I thought it was high time to write an article. This is also for those who are planning their Halloween and are just sticking to 31 Oct. Apart from checking out craft stores such as Spotlight, who have already got the Halloween Decorations in, I would suggest to think outside the box (or coffin) and check out discount stores, as they often have goth items, candles, lanterns, etc all year round. And there's always the great cyber supermarket - eBay! But in order to decorate with a permanent Halloween look/Goth look there are some rules to follow: 1/ Keep it low key, with a few accent pieces, relying on colour, textiles, and atmosphere to do the rest. Otherwise you end up looking like those crazy cat ladies that love Christmas 24/7 - and it looks too try hard. 2/ Carefully draw up a plan, and mood board, instead of just jamming halloween stuff everywhere - think of a theme (yes I know the theme is Halloween, but focus on one aspect of the topic, e.g.: whimsy; really all out scary; goth; traditional. 3/ Work from 'worst case scenario' - so if you are renting, or have to comply with a body corporate, permanent fixtures, such as painting all the walls inside and out black are obviously out, so would be decorating the outside and around the front door (other than the 31st Oct). So work with what you have, and tell a story from inside the front door to your personal space, or stick to just your own space 4/ You don't have to wait for the commercial packaged halloween decorations to hit the shops before snapping up everything in a frenzies shopping trip. But this is where the planning comes in. Think outside the square. I once did a very effective entrance way for halloween with some roses that I bought the over 2 weeks earlier and hung them upside down to dry (this makes them dry with the stalks straight), then used them to make a dried flower arrangement and wreath. With some cheap black satin draped down and a cheap styrofoam gravestone, it immediately told the story of a creepy cemetery. 5/ Other quick and cheap decor ideas are to get cheap off white lace curtains that are already made up. Soak part them in a large bucket of strong black tea, make deep tears and cuts here and there, or claw marks/tears and splatter fake blood (from discount stores or costumiers) and hang them up in your window or use as a room divider/screen. 6/ Skull and fake bones on a cake stand or a skull under a cake bell 7/ Candles everywhere, and you can get cheap battery operated ones now. I've popped battery tea light candles inside pillar candles on a large wrought iron candelabra so you can have them outside on windy evenings 8/ Don't underestimate the power of "telling a story" with your decor, you can just introduce atmosphere, and any visitor's minds will fill in the rest. Last year my most successful outdoor decoration for Trick or Treaters was a cheap very large dog collar that I got from a $2 shop, a very large padlock, attached that and the collar buckled up to a long heavy gal chain that went under the garage door, with a fake bloodied arm and hand that looked like it was just chewed. You could see the T&T's eyes getting bigger and bigger as they walked past the garage to get to my front door, as it told the story that some very large animal that had eaten the last victim, has just escaped. People were actually posing next to the chain and dog collar taking selfies and posting it to social media! 9/ For a permanent Halloween look, think of what you have and what you use everyday, and see how you can gothize it - painting your furniture black so it all co-ordinates, or use your textiles and fabrics such as goth cushions on your couch, instead of recovering the entire couch, or, as mentioned, choose your curtains in dark or black or velvet or heavy brocade , instead of painting the walls. 10/ See No. 7 - candles, use candles instead of snapping on the light, or choose lantern looking light fittings, chandeliers, or you could even go industrial chic insane asylum - I re-iterate - plan out your theme and decor before rushing in to decorate. 11/ For the outdoors, plant ivy to run up the outside walls, or over your front door (again you have to plan well in advance if you want this ready for Halloween) - and as for the rest of the garden, don't bother weeding and allow to overgrow, or go for a meadow lawn, so you don't have to mow Hope these hints help and given you some new ideas, feel free to add more suggestions

06.01.2022 I love costume making, and I don't mind spending a lot of time on a project IF it makes practical sense A project that makes sense to me, is one that is versa...tile, that I can use over and over again. So making a perfectly-fitting mermaid skirt pattern that allows me to create different styles was a GREAT project! All these were made out of the same pattern Check out how I made all these skirts!
