25.01.2022 Book about William PT Gow and his descendants soon to be published FROM DISTRESS TO DELIVERANCE The Life and Times of William Gow Convict, Schoolmaster, Farmer... by Stephen Gow (2020), ISBN 978-0-646-80379-1, 304 pages, $60. This limited edition, colour illustrated hardback book will be published next month to mark the bicentenary of the Wilberforce Schoolhouse, where William Gow (c.1795-1872) was the first schoolmaster. Extensively researched, fully referenced and indexed, the book provides an account of his life and times, from his arrest and trial in London in 1816 to his death at Richmond, NSW, in 1872. The book also includes biographical information on his ten children and some of their notable descendants. Essential reading for family members, it should also appeal to those with an interest in Hawkesbury and colonial history. 23.01.2022 This is a bit of a long shot but I am searching for information about Miss Judith THEWLIS. Judith was Headmistress of the Stratford Girls School in Lawson betw...een 1957 and 1960. She died 23 October 1960 at Katoomba Hospital and was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium in Sydney, but no burial place is mentioned. She is not at NSC, and not with her parents in Melbourne, so her ashes may have gone elsewhere. She was from Victoria (born in Yorkshire 1897 and came with her family to Melbourne in 1898. Prior to coming to the Blue mountains she was in Katanning WA, and prior to that Headmistress of Shelford Girls School in Melbourne. I have mined Trove and what info I could find on the Stratford school on the net. Judith was also involved with the Girl Guides up there as well. She never married. Thank you. See more

22.01.2022 Susanna Perry: Died Norfolk Island 22nd August 1841 Susanna had arrived on Norfolk Island with her brother Captain William Sheaffe 50th regiment and his family ...in 1837, here she met and married William Henry Tennison Perry - The grandson of the earl of Limerick Ireland, who was stationed here as the Superintendent Of Agriculture They were married by Thomas Sharpe in1838, Susanna had two children to Perry before sadly passing away just 15 days after giving birth to daughter Susanna Emily. Perry soon found love again - though Commandant Alexander Maconochie was far from impressed with him - Extract of letter from Maconochie to Governor George Gipps "He thus sets no stable example to the men:- Very seldom does he come to church, though I have especially spoken to him of it.:- and has recently exposed himself in a most un-amicable manner by an attachment to a child of 15 years of age whom a designing Mother has thrust on him, and whom, in spite of every remonstrance even formally pressed on him, he is now going to marry Scarcely was his late wife dead when his attention to this girl became particular: - and immediately on his return from Sydney she and her mother left their natural protectors her father and brother, who continued to reside in the barracks, (Her father a Lieutenant of the 96th Reg) and went to live with Mr Perry alone at Longridge The scenes that passed there in a way of quarreling and making up again , became the jest of both free and bond:" There is so much more to Susannas story- Come on tour with us to learn more

20.01.2022 COVID-19 Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic health emergency, all volunteer research assistance at both Springwood and Katoomba city libraries ceased on Friday 20 March 2020. The service will resume later this year but in the meantime the Society will only be able to offer research assistance via email or Facebook. Unfortunately, both Ancestry and Find My Past library editions are only available in the Library and cannot be accessed at home unless you have paid for a subscr...iption. Now might be the perfect time to put pen to paper (fingers to the keyboard) and write an article for our Journal, Explorers Tree. 15.01.2022 It is a difficult time for societies with the closure of Family History Societies and Libraries. However with access to Birth, Death and Marriage Index and other databases it is possible to research from self-isolation or social distancing. We want to assure you that we are still able to provide NSW Transcriptions. The NSW Registry has provided us with continued and safe access to the NSW Registrations. Could you share with your members that we are still able to provide transcriptions. Also during these isolating times, we have reduced the cost of Full Transcriptions to $18.

14.01.2022 Parish Registers 2020.04.18 htpps://genealogy.ie/parish-registers/ If you are researching the period before civil registration started, your only source is the Parish registers. You do need to know in what County and Parish your ancestor(s) lived. If you dont know, a good starting point is to look at where your family lived in the Census, as a lot of families would continue to live in a Parish for many generations.... Most Parish Registers only started round 1830, and for many counties even decades later. Also, over time, many have been lost. You should also consider that errors both in the original entry and in transcription are not uncommon. Names were also often misspelled: priests would write down what they thought the name was and many of the parishioners could not check it as many could not read or write. The three main sources for the Parish records are: Irish Genealogy which is a free Irish government website. You should always check which registers are available before you start your search, as for some areas none are. Roots Ireland. This is a paid site. You should always check which registers are available before you start your search, as for some areas none are. This database contains also some Church of Ireland registers. Not many of these survived as most were destroyed in 1922. National Library Ireland. This is a free site, that provides digitised copies of the Parish registers. Baptismal registers are also available at Ancestry and Find My Past. For Northern Ireland, you should check their guide first. You can then head to PRONI for their catalogue.

11.01.2022 Gow Family Gathering, Wilberforce, October long weekend We are hoping that the Gow Family Gathering planned for 4 October 2020 will be allowed to go ahead, give...n the rate at which social isolation restrictions are currently being lifted. Looking forward to seeing you there. Have you mentioned our event to people you know named Gow? Are you a descendant of William PT Gow and Maria Dunstan? Do you have this date marked in your Calendar? Have you told everyone in your family about this event? You can contact me via this group or by sending an email to [email protected].

09.01.2022 NSW Cemetery indexes. I have received a very large number of CD-Rs with cemetery indexes and images of headstones compiled by my friend Roma Waldron who sadly p...assed away in 2013. Roma worked tirelessly for many years on the project. The photos were taken by Roma and a number of collaborators mainly throughout the New England and Hunter Valley regions. I have permission from Romas next of kin to make this material more available but do not want to step on anyones toes. No copyright appears to have been claimed on much of the material so I welcome suggestions on what to do such as providing copies to family history and local history societies and/or put it on line. The areas covered have little bearing on my own familys origins but they do connect with my research into photographers of the 19th and early 20th centuries that worked throughout NSW, so I look forward to gleaning info on them from the immense haul of material I have before me. 07.01.2022 The January 2020 Issue of Engineering Heritage Australia Magazine is now online Find it at: https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au///Previous-Magazines This issue of the magazine starts with an update to what we can expect at the 2020 Australasian Engineering Heritage Conference in Dunedin, New Zealand in November this year. Then Bill Phippen tells us an interesting story about the history of the Nowra Bridge across the Shoalhaven River, about 170km south of Sydney, and se...ttles an old argument about the purpose for which this bridge was built. Ken McInnes, in his research into engineering and industrial history came across accounts of a large reinforced concrete barge and a reinforced concrete pontoon built in Sydney Harbour between 1914 and 1917 by Messrs Stone & Siddeley. He speculates that both could have been located at Circular Quay and asks if anyone in Sydney knows anything about them. Frank Johnson has been fascinated with the history of Major-General A.C. Fewtrell, a railway engineer who rose to prominence in the Australian army in World Wars 1 and 2, and had an equally illustrious career in the NSW Railways, where he capped his achievements by supervising the design and construction of the second Hawkesbury River Railway Bridge. The Connections pages include an interesting corollary to the Moon Landing story we told in the September 2019 issue of the Magazine. There are also notes about Newcastle and the BHP Steel Works there, the barque James Craig, and the NSW Locomotive 3801 (or 38-oh-1). Its a month late this time - I blame the bushfires, and the smoke, which kept me off work for 2 months! Cheers Margret Doring, Editor, EHA Magazine.

04.01.2022 Dear Blue Mountains Family History Society, I hope my email finds you safe and well. ... I am currently doing a study that investigates how inherited family secrets, stories, and memories inform Australian’s understandings of colonial history. I am hoping to interview some family historians who have found interactions between Indigenous people and settlers in their ancestry and who are doing some research into that aspect of their family tree. Do you know of any family historians who may be interested in talking to me about their research? Given the situation with the coronavirus, interviews can be done over zoom/skype or in person when restrictions are eased. I am very happy to chat on the phone if it would be helpful to know more about the project first. 01.01.2022 Did you know the British census has evolved over time? Heres a quick guide.

01.01.2022 Hello. Hopefully this post is acceptable for the forum. I'm attempting to trace the decedents of David and Maude Huggins. A relative who has been researching ou...r family tree has discovered a document that might be of interest to the decedents of David and Maude. David and Maude were neighbours of my Grandparents and Mother during the war years in Bexhill, England. I would be happy to pass it on should they wish. David and Maude emigrated to Australia after WW2 and were living 'somewhere' in the lower Blue Mountains until the 1980's. My late Mother was in correspondence with them for a while after David wrote to a local newspaper in England. My Mother heard of David's passing later in the 1980's. I think (?) they had a son who was a car dealer in the Sydney area at one time. I've carried out numerous searches without any obvious clues. I discovered another Huggins family with connections to the area, but I don't believe it to be the same people. On the remote chance somebody might know the whereabouts of the descendants of David and Maude, maybe they could point me in their direction. Or they are welcome to contact myself of course. Alternatively, should anybody have advice on where to proceed next, that would be welcome. Thanks for taking the time to read. See more
