25.01.2022 One of the History tasks I particularly enjoy is writing short stories for the 'Tourist' Magazine. Recently, I submitted a short story on the 1931 collapse of the cliff face near Narrow Neck in Katoomba, and for this post, I've added an original 1931 photo of the impending collapse, and a recent photo of the 'scar' on the cliff face following the collapse. The story will be published in either the Winter or Spring edtion of 'Tourist'.
25.01.2022 G'Day everyone. Yesterday, I went on a long walk, (Prince Henry Walk in Katoomba - opened in the 1930's), and came across these wooden steps, which I expect have been walked on for many years.
23.01.2022 Sorting through my Carrington files - on a chilly wet July day in Katoomba - I came across this story about the Carrington Pool. Does anyone remember seeing it, or swimming in it?
22.01.2022 I recently bumped into a someone who used to work at the Carrington Hotel. She was glad (but I suspect a little surprised) I still conduct Tours at the Hotel. "Wow, that's incredible!" she exclaimed. But one of the reasons I continue to share the History of the Hotel (with both guests and staff) is seen in the photo of the 'Dining Hall' The photo is from 'Souvenir of The Blue Mountains' published in 1903 - which an elderly neighbour passed onto me the other week. Information just keeps on coming in. You can never stop learning in this profession!
21.01.2022 Recently a friend alerted me to a stone and bricked walled dwelling (complete with trough fed by piped water) underneath Lincoln Rock at Wentworth Falls. From some research this week, it seems the cave was walled up during or just after World War Two. The area was also on land owned by a Deer Park, which operated in the 1970's - 1980's. Very glad I've now seen this site!
20.01.2022 Took a walk this arvo - just 15 minutes from home - and found this Angophra. Probably my favourite bush tree.
18.01.2022 I took the chance to duck out to Mt York the other afternoon - needed to recce an upcoming tour there. It was also fun to collect a bit of bush tucker while on the walk. These little beauties are full of vitamins!
18.01.2022 This morning I was able to witness the Phantom Falls in Katoomba - as they tumbled over the Narrow Neck from Megalong Valley on the right into Jamison Valley on the left. Second time in one week looking at the view from this spot!
17.01.2022 The Three Sisters Motel neon sign. Straight out of the 1950's/60's. Love it - and hope it keeps on shining for years to come.
15.01.2022 The Roaring Twenties Tours at the Carrington Hotel are going ahead - with full numbers on each Tour. Hoping for fine weather, so we can enjoy 1920's stories related to both the outside and inside of the Carrington.
14.01.2022 Recently, I've bought these two books. They are both excellent! '50 Blue Mountains Openings' by Keith Painter. 'The Curiosity of Melbourne Ward' by Jim Smith. Reading and research continues, even if Tours can't.
14.01.2022 Recently, I've been teaching 'Local Towns' to a group of adults in the lower Blue Mountains. (I tell ya, they're a rowdy bunch!) Last week, we touched upon Faulconbridge, Linden and Woodford. Attached is a photo of the Western Road at Faulco. Like to guess the photo's location? ... (Photo courtesy of the Springwood Historical Society).
11.01.2022 Facebook has been asking me to share what the Tour Business has been up to, lately? Well, while I can't conduct History Tours in the Mountains at the moment, eg at the Carrington Hotel, I've been fixing up many years of Gazette articles and adverts about the Carrington - to be (finally) properly filed. The photo shows some of these articles and adverts - an example of behind the scenes 'study and preparation' which goes into History Tours. And if I don't use this down time wisely, I'm a mug!
09.01.2022 NSW Railway Time -Table Country Section information, from 30th May 1926. Western Line, with Towns and Carrington Hotel Advert. (From my Dad's wife's collection).
08.01.2022 So 20 years ago today, I conducted my first Tour at the Carrington Hotel. 16th July 1999. I've been privileged to have met so many people - guests and staff - and learnt so much since then, (and not just the History of the Hotel). The late 1970's back to front postcard is one of the stories I've collected. (Note the dog on the front steps. He was called 'Dennis'.) I was able to celebrate the Anniversary today with a Tour with two guests - around the top end of Katoomba St, which included a brief look at the Carrington.
08.01.2022 This morning I was one of a large crowd who watched former Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, plant her Oak Tree at the Corridor of Oaks at Faulconbridge. Since 1934 an oak tree has been planted for every Australian Prime Minister. Sometimes the oak is planted by family of the former Prime Minister, and at other times by the PM himself - or in today's case by herself. As we conduct a History Tour of the Corridor of Oaks, it was extra special witnessing today's event
06.01.2022 We had three well attended Roaring Twenties Tours at the Carrington Hotel this weekend. This was the 5th year of these Tours where around ten 1920's Carrington stories are told on site - getting that real sense of 'being there'.
04.01.2022 Had the pleasure of co - conducting a History Tour around the Carrington Hotel this morning, with the Vauxhall Car Club. They parked some of their cars out the front of the Hotel. Nice!
03.01.2022 On Saturday 1st Feb, and Sunday 2nd Feb, I'll be giving a 30 minute History Talk at the Carrington Hotel, on stories from the 1920's at the Carrington. Come along and hear stories about ... young flappers who annoyed an Edwardian lady, an audatious drive in a 1923 Vauxhall, a Royal couple who came for lunch, a beginning of a life long relationship, visiting Frenchmen, a political rally, American oceanliner guests, a silent movie made on location, etc ... Talks will be at 10.1...5am and 1.45pm. $10/person. Book via [email protected] Or phone/txt me on 0402 483 599. Cheers Paul Innes. See more
01.01.2022 After sorting out many Carrington files, I've decided this 2001 Brochure is my pick of all the brochures. It was truly a 'one off'.
