The Australian Government has announced stricter measures to slow the spread of the virus, which are having significant economic impacts, especially for the SME segment. To support Australian businesses through the impact of the Coronavirus, the Australian Government will provide temporary relief measures to manage cash flow chal...lenges for financially distressed businesses. The Coronavirus Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Guarantee Scheme has been set up to provide up to $40 billion of lending to SMEs for timely access to working capital. This scheme officially commences from April 2020 and will be available for new loans made until 30 September 2020. The Government will provide eligible lenders with a guarantee for loans to SMEs, including sole traders with a turnover of up to $50 million, with the following terms: Maximum total size of loans of $250,000 per borrower Loans will be up to three years, with an initial six-month repayment holiday Unsecured finance, meaning that borrowers will not have to provide an asset as security for the loan To encourage lending to businesses, the RBA has announced additional low-cost funding to banks if they expand their business lending, with incentives applying particularly to new loans to SMEs. The Treasury will also work closely with participating lenders to ensure loans are available as soon as possible.
