23.01.2022 As the wild weather and long cold nights approach, our role in supporting people and pets facing homelessness becomes increasingly important. Our annual Pet Foo...d Drive gives people and their companion animals the opportunity to stay together despite difficult circumstances. And with an unprecedented number of people facing unemployment and housing instability, our essential support is in greater demand than ever before. This year, due to COVID-19, we will be running things a bit differently. In partnership with our friends at SavourLife, we will be running a Virtual Pet Food Drive throughout the month of June. For every 2.5kg bag of their quality grain-free food purchased, Savourlife will donate three bags to POTH. Thats three times the impact! Our goal is to collect 30,000 meals of pet food so we have a big task ahead of us and we will need your help to make it happen. For more information on how you can get involved with our Pet Food Drive this June, visit: www.petsofthehomeless.org.au/petfooddrive. #PetFoodDrive #NoEmptyBowls #Junerosity

17.01.2022 Loretta has sent our Club an update from sunny Finland . She has been enjoying a nice summer and has started back at school. This means that summer holidays are sadly coming to an end. Loretta has applied for a language course in the near city Lahti and if she gets in, she willl be learning basic Finnish 1&2 every Monday and Wednesday after school, starting in September. Pictured here is Lorettas first host family tNiemis daughter Hemi, who came back from Tassie at the end... of July.; They had a large joint welcoming party and birthday party for her at their home in Luhtikyl. Many of their family friends came and it was pretty warm (24) so everyone had a massive lunch outside. Helmi and I for dessert, made a massive pavlova that fed over 30 people. Instead of putting strawberries, passionfruit and kiwi fruit on top, we put the seasonal blueberries and raspberries that grow all over Finland during the Summertime. Looks like she is having a fantastic time and sends hers best wishes to all.
16.01.2022 Its always our preference to share good news stories with our POTH community, but not all of our cases have happy endings and we think its important to share ...the bittersweet stories, too. Last week I was contacted by a social worker on behalf of a Melbourne family. The familys beautiful 15-year-old collie, Cooper, had suddenly become seriously unwell and they couldnt afford to take him to the vet. Cooper had been vomiting overnight and had a nasty abscess on his behind; now his condition was rapidly deteriorating. They were desperate to find help for their beloved companion and didnt know where else to turn knowing that the vet bill would be costly. Their welfare payment has recently been cut off and they have been waiting for it to be reinstated but Cooper needed to be treated right away. And that is when we stepped in. We were able to get Cooper seen immediately by a vet, who stabilised his condition and ran some tests. Sadly, those tests revealed that Cooper most likely had stomach cancer, and nothing more could be done for him in terms of treatment. His family was heartbroken with the diagnosis and had decided to take Cooper home to spend a few days with him before saying their goodbyes. Knowing that the family wasnt in the position to even pay for the cost of his euthanasia, I told the clinic that we would cover the cost of the procedure for them. Here I was looking at a picture of Cooper that the clinic had sent through and I would be lying to you if I told you that I did not break down crying that day. After an overnight stay at the clinic, Cooper returned home to be with his family. Once at home, his condition improved and the family told us he is doing relatively well now, so theyre keeping a close eye on him, enjoying their time together and taking each moment as it comes. While we share Coopers familys sadness and wish there was more that can be done for him, we are so glad that were able to help relieve his pain and give his devoted humans some additional time to say goodbye. No matter how much longer theyll have together, we know hell be showered with love. We are still here for Cooper and his family when the time comes for them to say goodbye but we cant do it alone. We need your support so that we can continue helping Coopers family and others like them who rely on us during the most heartbreaking and desperate times. Give at www.petsofthehomeless.org.au/donate with the comment COOPER to contribute towards Coopers emergency treatment. We thank you on behalf of Cooper and those who love him most.

07.01.2022 It was around 8.30am and I had just arrived at the cafe. I was about to drop off containers of cooked pumpkin for Parker when my phone rang. It was Gery and he ...didnt sound too good. Parker has gone off his food and hadnt had a drop to drink for two days. I drove over straight away to see them and the sprightly boy I once knew is now a shadow of his former self. He was clearly unwell and nothing could get him to move even an inch. We rushed him to the vet immediately and given his age and condition, the kindest thing we could do for him was to let him go. Gery was there with Parker to comfort him and he stayed with him until he took his last breath. "Thank you for the best years of my life old friend, you are no longer in pain". We have offered to have Parker cremated so that Gery could have his best friend back with him. And although this wasnt the ending we were all hoping for, we are really grateful for the outpouring of support from the community. So many people have messaged us to offer their help and a few have also donated to assist with Parkers vet bill. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful community who are always there for us when we needed them. Rest easy dear boy

03.01.2022 She was not in a good shape. She was almost falling over with her face to the ground but still she held on. She had waited until she was certain that her dog Li...ly will be taken care of before she would take care of herself. That same night after we picked Lily up, she was taken to the hospital for treatment. Lily is a sweet and gentle 12 year old lady who is now in foster care with us while her owner receives much needed medical attention for a life threatening infection. To some, Lily might just be dog. But to Kellie, she is her whole world and her reason for living. It is amazing to see just how strong a bond is between a person and their beloved companion and we are glad to be able to play a part in keeping them together.
03.01.2022 If you missed the Rotary District Changeover last week, here is a link to the 50-minute recording!
