22.01.2022 Ever had to make a Freedom of Information request just to find out why the NDIS made the decision they did? Can't believe it was ever a thing but it was. But so...me really good news today- that's all changing. If you want: access to your personal information copies of medical reports used during access or reviews copies of other information used during planning meetings or reviews reasons why the NDIA have made the decision they have You can ask for the information to be given to you. 22.01.2022 Breaking news out of the NDIS this morning ... The NDIA have released the Price Guide and Support Catalogue for 2020-2021. This guide will be effective from Jul...y 1 this year. As always there is a lot to look at but a few things jump out straight away: The Fair Work Commission has not yet made a decision on the minimum wage. This will happen sometime in June. This will affect the NDIS prices - so an updated guide should be released sometime before the end of June. So keep an eye out. Participant plans will automatically be increased to cover the increase in prices. (But note - NOT the 10% loading that has been added due to COVID-19) There are some new line items to help people with a psychosocial disability, including the introduction of new Psychosocial Recovery Coaches. There are also some new line items to cover Individualised Living Options (ILO is NDIS-speak for anyone looking to do something innovative or interesting with their accommodation and support). There are more line items covering people looking to get into work. The guide has a new look which hopefully makes things easier to find. The NDIA have also released the results of their annual review into prices. Some of you contributed to this review so may want to take a quick look. You can find the news item about the guide here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//4835-delivering-ndis-annual-price You can find the new price guide and support catalogue here - https://www.ndis.gov.au/providers/price-guides-and-pricing You can find the results of the annual price review here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//price-guides-/annual-price-review UPDATE: We have a quick explainer on our website. We have waded through the detail so you don't have to - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/ndis-prices-the-good-/ #NDISMakeItWork (Image description: A red rectangle with the words "Breaking News" in white capital letters. 14.01.2022 Some breaking news from the NDIA this afternoon ... The NDIA have just released the Functional Capacity Assessment Framework (phew that's a mouthful). This long... document gives some information about why the NDIA think independent assessments are a good idea. It also explains a little bit more about how and why they have selected the assessment tools they have. It is rather ironically titled - given that the NDIA have said the assessments won't just be about function. And yet that's what the framework is called? The NDIA says the framework has been developed with researchers, academics and allied health professionals. But not, as far as we are aware, with input from people with disability or their families. This is a very technical document and quite hard to get through. There is no Easy Read or plain English version available. So it's going to take us a while. We will of course let you know what we find. We know many of you have so many questions and concerns about what independent assessments will mean for you. We share them - and we promise to keep taking them to the government and the NDIA. And that is not all we are doing - so stay tuned. In the meantime if you want to look at what has been released today you can find it on the NDIS website. But be warned because it is very hard going. You can read the media release here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//5260-ndia-releases-new-functional You can read the full framework here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//functional-capacity-assessment-fr The NDIA have also released some frequently asked questions about independent assessments. You can find them here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//inde/independent-assessment-q-and (Image description: A red rectangle with the words "Breaking News" in white capital letters. Underneath the words you can see the Every Australian Counts logo and the words "NDIS: Make It Work)

11.01.2022 A really big thank you to everyone who has shared their NDIS experiences with us over the last few days. For anyone who might have missed it... The NDIA have ...introduced lots of changes in the last few weeks to try and help people with disability and their families get the support they need to manage during this really difficult time. We want to know - what's working for you, what's not and what still needs to change. We have a quick survey so you can tell us about your experience. We want to know things like: Have you spoken to anyone in the NDIA Coronavirus team? Did they fix your problem? Have you tried to move money between capacity building and core? How did it go? Have you had a planning meeting over the phone? Or anything else you want to tell us. You can find the survey here - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/eac-ndis-coronavirus There is also an Easy Read version - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/ndis-whats-working-an/ You can also read more on our website - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/ndis-whats-working-an/ We know everyone has a lot on their plate - and we don't want to add to that. But we do want to check in so we can keep pushing for the changes you need. #NDISMakeItWork (Image description: The words "we want to hear from you" in a speech bubble on a dark red background. 10.01.2022 Some important breaking news this morning about the introduction of compulsory assessments to the NDIS. The legislation to introduce these new assessments has n...ow been delayed. The draft legislation will now be released for consultation early next year. The legislation is expected to be passed by July 1. This means the start date of these new assessments will now be delayed - but no info yet about exactly when that will be. And the NDIA will also "shortly" release three new consultation papers about these assessments. These papers will look at: Access and assessments Planning and assessments Changes to early childhood early intervention (ECEI) Consultation on the content of these papers will happen over the next few months. No word yet about what it will look like - we will let you know as soon as it hits. And how you can have your say. In the meantime you can find an information paper from the Department of Social Services here - https://www.dss.gov.au/disab/ndis-reforms-information-paper There is also an Easy Read version. You can find it on this page - https://www.dss.gov.au/disability-/ndis-legislative-reforms #NDISMakeItWork #NDIS (Image description: A red rectangle with the words "Breaking News" in white capital letters. 09.01.2022 Check out these great tips and hints from our exec and speechie Matt Thompson. This is the beginning of our weekly clips with a focus on AAC and key word sign. This week's focus is "want".
08.01.2022 Just in case you missed it ... At the end of last week the NDIA made a small but incredibly important announcement. There is now more flexibility in how you can... use your NDIS funds. NDIS participants who are plan or agency managed can now use their core funds across ALL core funding categories. That means you no longer need at least $1 in a category to move your funds around. That means: Participants who need a smart device to continue support at this time can now buy one with their core funds (even if they don't have a budget for consumables). Participants can use core funds for transport. (Note if you receive a periodic transport payment you can't use that flexibly - you must use if for transport costs.) The necessary system change was made on May 9. Self managed participants are going to have to wait until June for the system change to be made for them. It may have taken a global pandemic to do it (!) but the greater flexibility you have all asked for is finally starting to happen. You can find the news announcement here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//4802-plan-flexibility-and-auto-ex You can find more questions and answers on the Coronavirus pages on the NDIS website - https://www.ndis.gov.au//participants-co/using-your-budget #NDISMakeItWork (Image description: A picture of a rainbow coloured slinky)
07.01.2022 Some breaking news this morning The Minister for the NDIS Stuart Robert has released the government’s response to the Tune review. Just in case you have forgo...tten (because it already feels like a hundred years ago thanks to COVID) Last year Mr David Tune conducted a review into the NDIS Act. Not the whole kit and caboodle of the NDIS, but just what needed to change in the Act. And even though it was just supposed to be about the NDIS Act, Mr Tune made a bunch of sensible, practical recommendations about a whole lot of things like the need for simple and clear language to explain key NDIS terms like reasonable and necessary. Things like greater flexibility in how you can use your NDIS funds. And outreach and support for people who are really missing out like First Nations people with disability or people from a culturally and linguistically diverse background. And the good news is that the government appears to have accepted all the recommendations except for two and those they have accepted in principle. That’s government speak for we’re kinda on board but we need to hedge our bets for a few reasons. Great to see acceptance - now for making them happen! And the Minister also announced the release of the Participant Service Charter and the Participant Service Improvement Plan (mouthfuls we know). Those two documents do two things. The Charter outlines the way participants can expect the NDIA to behave when it works with them. And the Plan outlines all the work the NDIA will do over the next two years to improve people’s experience of the scheme. Really critical things like introducing longer plans and greater flexibility in how you can use your NDIS funds. But amongst all the other things there was one part of the announcement that did catch our eye. The Minister also announced that from next year the NDIA will fund independent assessment for people applying to enter the scheme. And then later in the year for people having plan reviews at critical life points like leaving school or leaving home. There is not a lot of detail about that one. We know that lots of you are worried about what those assessments will mean for you. We do want the NDIS to be fair and consistent. And people shouldn’t have to pay for expensive reports that may or may not hit the mark. But the most important thing of ALL - we need to make sure that people get the support they desperately need. As with all of these things the devil is always in the detail. There was a lot of information released today so we are working our way through it - so stay tuned (no pun intended). In the meantime you can read the announcement here https://ministers.dss.gov.au/media-releases/6156 You can read the government's response here - https://www.dss.gov.au//government-response-to-the-ndis-ac You can read some media coverage here - https://www.abc.net.au//ndis-disability-sector-go/12602432 The Participant Service Charter is here - https://www.ndis.gov.au/about-us/policies/service-charter The Participant Service Improvement Plan is here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//participant-service-improvement-p And if you want to go back and have a look at the Tune review again you can find it here - https://www.dss.gov.au//2019-review-of-the-ndis-act-and-th Or our summary here - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/singing-to-the-same-o/ The NDIA and Minister have released a few short videos this morning. You can find them all here - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/big-ndis-changes-are-/ #NDIS #NDISMakeItWork (Image description: A red rectangle with the words "Breaking News" in white capital letters. 05.01.2022 Wondering about iPads, grocery delivery fees, or PPE? Last week we held a Zoom forum with Scott McNaughton from the NDIA. And a lot of you had plenty of exce...llent questions for him. For those of you who missed out - here are his answers. We've got a short summary up now on our website - along with the transcript. Check it out at https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/all-the-big-announcem/
04.01.2022 Some really really REALLY good news from the NDIS this morning NDIA General Manager Scott McNaughton used the Zoom forum with us here at Every Australian Coun...ts this morning to let everyone know that the NDIS is changing its policy regarding devices like iPads and tablets. You can now purchase a device with your NDIS funds if: You don’t already have a similar device You need it for support or therapy It has not been funded through another system (like education) So you can’t use it just to binge on Netflix. But you can use it for things like therapy or to join an exercise class or to learn a new skill with a support worker. (And we would add you probably need to find the cheapest suitable option - if you need to buy a particular kind of device you will probably need to explain why) The NDIS website says there will be more information released soon. In the meantime you can find the question and the answer here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//participants-co/using-your-budget And you can watch Scott from this morning below. It is really good to see that the NDIS is listening and being more flexible to help everyone get through this really difficult time
03.01.2022 Hi all just a quick reminder, singing group will be delivered through Google meet for BMS students and families at 9:30am on Tuesday! You will have received a t...imetable with links in the latest newsletter. I will try and do a dual live stream this week, and then we will be moving to Google for term 2. I will still post the video to the Yamffa page upon completion if you missed the live stream or were coming here purely for that purpose.
03.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS UPDATE WITH TRANSCRIPT: The NDIA is now officially encouraging people to flexibly use your funds to purchase devices if you don't already have one... to access online therapy and fitness services. The NDIA is also working to source devices for participants! Information direct from NDIA DCEO Scott McNaughton on the currently broadcasting Every Australian Counts live webinar. Huge shout out to the Every Australian Counts team for their work to make this webinar happen, and to them and all the advocates and participants and families and providers who have been pushing so hard to help the NDIS support these purchases. You do not need reports etc to do this (but you might want some advice from an OT or similar to make sure you get what's needed) and claim from your core funds, but don't go silly - only buy what is needed (and that's not going to be the top of the line $1500 item - if you want that, maybe just claim the cost of a basic item). You would generally claim this from consumables funding, if not, from any other core :bucket". If you do not have core funds, and need the device to access CB funds, my personal opinion (not official at this point) would be to use your CB funds. You can also call the call centre on 1800 800 100 (select option 5) and ask them to shift funds, or switch some funds to self managed so you can purchase if you are agency managed. Here is part of the transcript from the EAC webinar: GAIL (webinar attendee): What if we do not have an iPad, laptop, computer, the internet? Can we use some NDIS funding for these things? SCOTT MCNAUGHTON: A really good question and one that is coming up a lot. It is one of the top questions being asked at our national contact centre. The positive around this, I must say, Gail, and people watching today, is that we are starting to hear a lot of innovative ways service providers are changing business models. Participants can continue to get some of their therapies and certain support by the internet. That is great. We have heard some examples of gym classes run online as well. Fantastic. It makes sure people can still access, using different social media to do that. It encourages providers to think innovatively. We do not want people... once the worlds wakes up in COVID- in six's month’s time with children having progress erased. We want access to continue for these innovative services. Regarding the actual question... a lot of Australians have access to those devices, we know that. But when you don't, and when you need a device to continue to access your disability services, we are encouraging you to use your NDIS plan to access those. So you can get those support. It is important, where you need certain things and those devices to be those online therapies, online gym classes. To connect with your speech therapist, or whoever is supporting you through your NDIS plan, we encourage people, if they do not have a device, to use the plane fixedly and purchased one. There will be more coming out on this including how we speed up the supply of access to those devices as well. We are working on that in the background, so in the meantime if you have funding in your plan and you need one of these to access your supports, we encourage you to use your plan flexibly to purchase such a device you can keep receiving supports. KIRSTEN DEANE: That's really good news. I can see from the chat, Stay tuned to https://www.ndis.gov.au/coronavirus for the official update to their Q&A's
